Dungarees on adults

How do people feel about adults wearing dungarees?!

I’ve fancied some for ages and just ordered these: lucyandyak.com/collections/corduroy-dungarees

But now wondering what on earth I put with them top/shoes wise...and if I’ll just look silly 😂.

Any mumsnetters have dungaree success?!

I'm a short size 14 and would probably look ridiculous. Having said that, there's a local bar we go to (which will hopefully survive Covid) in which a pair of dungarees would fit right in. I'm increasingly tempted.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/05/2020 09:38

Im 5”2 and a curvy 12 and they work for me!

OP I don’t think there was a leg length option when I bought mine? It’s the size plus 30 or 32, the difference is in the bib as much as the leg. Both of mine are 30s and I roll the bottom slightly, but I like the look.

Runningforfood · 23/05/2020 09:48

Ahh I think I might have ordered them a bit short given you went for 30’ at 5ft2... might have to swap!

@runningforfood there was no option shorter than 30 when I bought mine. I like a rolled bottom too. My jeans are generally 28 legs but I like a roll on dungas so wouldn’t have gone shorter if there was an option

Plipplops · 23/05/2020 10:10

I have one from Amazon (classy!) and love them! I’m a bottom heavy 5’4” 41 year old. Wear them with a t shirt underneath, and sandals or converse. Generally female friends think they’re great, men ask if I’m going to do some decorating. They’re so comfy I couldn’t give a crap what anyone thinks...

sawollya · 23/05/2020 10:44

Not a good look in my opinion. But people can wear what they want.

If you're tall but not too tall and slim but not too slim and young enough to get away with anything but no so young you do actually look like a child, then they could work. So ... good luck!

gingersausage · 23/05/2020 11:21

I don’t like the L&Y style ones on me because they remind me of my maternity dungarees from 20+ years ago, but I’ve got a couple of denim pairs that I love. I’m a wheelchair user and dungarees are great because I don’t come untucked and end up with a cold back 🤣.

speakfriendandenter · 23/05/2020 11:26

I have the umi cotton ones and wear them rolled up and they don't look right on me at full length. Gi Fletcher wears them lots and the trousers too and I think she looks fab!

bilabongg · 23/05/2020 11:41

Gi Fletcher wears them lots

Is she a kids tv presenter?

aceyace · 23/05/2020 11:45

Try not to drop the straps into the toilet ...

Runningforfood · 23/05/2020 12:04

They’ve arrived and I both 1) look like a 7yr old 2) love them- something so joyous and free about wearing them!

Runningforfood · 23/05/2020 12:05

@aceyace have already struggled with this one- spent ages tying them to right length (hard to do) then realised i needed a wee 🙈

TooMinty · 23/05/2020 13:42

I'm wearing dungarees right now, love them! I'm only 5ft so do resemble a small child but I don't care!

I have them rolled up. I've got slippers on currently but if I was going out I'd wear Docs, Converse Hi-tops or trainers depending on the weather. Occasionally ballet flats/Toms.

I just have a plain white t-shirt with them today but sometimes I wear a Breton striped top or thin jumper in winter.

Thehollyandtheirony · 23/05/2020 14:05

I have come to the conclusion that they need to be tailored. Lucy and Yak look cute if you are pregnant but too shapeless on everyone else.

wigglybeezer · 23/05/2020 14:09

my mother is 78 and still wears them, she just kept on wearing them from the 70's onwards! admittedly she is slim and stylish compared to the average Granny.

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/05/2020 14:19

@Runningforfood you should be able to just skip the straps off your shoulders to wee. If I had to untie and retie every time I went to the loo (about 78 times a day) I’d never wear them

BuffaloCauliflower · 23/05/2020 14:19
  • slip not skip
BuffaloCauliflower · 23/05/2020 14:20

@bilabongg no she’s not

bilabongg · 23/05/2020 14:56

@BuffaloCauliflower oh must confuse her with someone else from Cbeebies

TeaAddict235 · 23/05/2020 15:04

I used to have some in black, but then after staying at my DM's my big sister stole them. How many consultants will admit to stealing their younger sister's clothes?? Very bloody few imagine. Since then she has also stolen some brown over the knee leather boots

EngagedAgain · 23/05/2020 15:07

They might look good on some people but what about the hassle when you want the loo!

tempnamechange98765 · 23/05/2020 19:01

Love them! I only have one pair of black denim ones from new look but I wish I had more. Haven't found a pair I like though.

I wear them with either short sleeve or long sleeve round neck tops! Soooo comfy.

speakfriendandenter · 23/05/2020 21:37

@bilabong
She does some kids tv yes. She's an author too, married to McFly singer Tim Fletcher who is an author too. They write together.

MerlinsButler · 23/05/2020 23:08

Come over to the outfit of the day shopping our wardrobe thread. Loads of dungarees on there at the moment and loads of Lucy and Yak fans / experts.

Even I'm tempted as I keep seeing the great outfits and patterns on others.

ofwarren · 23/05/2020 23:12

Love them.
My favourite brand is Run & Fly.
