Dungarees on adults

How do people feel about adults wearing dungarees?!

I’ve fancied some for ages and just ordered these: lucyandyak.com/collections/corduroy-dungarees

But now wondering what on earth I put with them top/shoes wise...and if I’ll just look silly 😂.

Any mumsnetters have dungaree success?!

I didn’t say “women should only wear an outfit according to their age”.

I said I think dungarees look childish. I’m not saying there should be a “saga” catalogue for women over 35 or that you can’t wear mini skirts. I just think dungarees in particular are clothes I’d associate with toddlers or farmers. I’d also think a man in dungarees would look a bit childish (or like a farmer from Alabama!). It’s nothing to do with “ooh you are 30 now better get out the twin set and pearls!” - I don’t subscribe to that at all. I just see dungarees in the same league as onesies,
or wearing my hair in bunches with ribbons or wearing a school uniform like outfit. I’d just feel like a ridiculous giant child all day and wouldn’t like it. It’s just not my style and the OP asked for opinions.

I am in my very very late forties 55 and i have a pair of GINORMOUS primark denim ones...they are not fitted in the least, I do wear them with a fitted t shirt so folks can see I go in at the waist (mostly!)

I had some in my yoof and wore all sorts of things with them, and I think i am reliving my heyday :o

WingBingo · 25/05/2020 06:47

@EllaPaella they look great. I have a some in black and in khaki. I think they look good.

@WingBingo - yes, I love yours.

ofwarren · 26/05/2020 13:15

@WingBingo where are your dungarees from?
I'm looking for some similar

WingBingo · 26/05/2020 13:17

Tesco’s! I have them in khaki and black.

They wash great and don’t crease. I got them about 2 weeks ago.

Outfoxed · 26/05/2020 13:20

Love wearing dungarees. Wearing short dungarees right now. No shame in my overgrown toddler game.

ShadowyFigure · 26/05/2020 13:24

I’m 5’ and used to wear dungarees and jumpsuits when I was in my 20s and 30s. I’ve just ordered these from Seasalt and am hoping they still shut me. I’m 59 now and an hour glass shape. Fully expecting to have to return them but I absolutely love dungarees and now am old enough not to give a shit about feeling too old in them. If they suit me I’ll wear them. If they are unflattering they’ll go back.

ShadowyFigure · 26/05/2020 13:24

Oops, forgot the pic.

They look great!

I’m also really into jumpsuits at the moment, I have a few now.

sonjadog · 26/05/2020 18:09

I got my first pair of dungarees a couple of weeks ago. I have wanted some for ages but being short and fat I thought I couldn't, and then I thought as I am sitting at home pretty much all day every day at the moment, I might as well do it in dungarees. Well, I love them. I don't want to wear anything else tbh. I thought I would never dare go outside in them, but I love them so much that I don't care what anyone thinks. Looking with a critical eye, they maybe aren't the most flattering garment I own, but I feel so happy in them that that must count for something, I reckon. Also, no piece of clothing is going to make me look tall and willowy, so may as well embrace my short and fat-ness.

Bestbe · 26/05/2020 18:16

Sorry no far too mother of daughters.

EllaPaella · 26/05/2020 22:57

What's mother of daughters?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 26/05/2020 23:33

@EllaPaella she’s that midwife instagrammer who had a huge scandal at the end of last year. Clemmie something. I don’t think she’s on Instagram now, but she had a huge following and worked with big brands - eg, M&S. She created an alternative persona on a gossip site, Tattle, and was a right bitch, with some racist undertones. When it all came out it blew up massively and was all over the media.

I never followed her but was fascinated by how it all played out.

Yearcat13 · 26/05/2020 23:37

Sorry but dungarees on grown women look awful. They're not even practical, ie easier to take trousers down or a skirt . Its infant clothing. Dream away girls, fine during lockdown but dont expect anyone to take you seriously in that outfit. Would you really take a man in dungarees seriously?

hammeringinmyhead · 26/05/2020 23:50

Dream away girls

Did you mean to be so bloody patronising?

I love mine. I've 2 pairs of Lucy and Yak Umis which I don't wear too often as they are very thin and a pain to wash, but I love my dark denim ones. They're quite fitted so more flattering than some of the baggier cuts from a couple of years ago.

I normally wear them with white Adidas trainers and a fitted t shirt. As for coats, I have a Diesel military parka that looks ok but I agree it's a struggle. I don't wear them in winter much as they need rolling.

Yearcat13 · 27/05/2020 00:02

Not patronising but realistic. Sure be comfort in your clothes but would you take a man in dungarees seriously? Would you like to get to know a man in dungarees better? First date he's wearing dungarees? What's your reaction? Be honest now.

HepzibahGreen · 27/05/2020 00:10

I have had loads of pairs for years. Denim ones, slinky ones, all sorts. I'm a slightly overfull hourglass and they kind of accentuate my waist while masking my boobs a bit. If I wear jeans and a fitted top I find it hard to get the jeans waistband in a place where it doesn't cut me and squish my hip fat ( ew I know!) and I'm self conscious in t shirt tops as my boobs are very noticeable. I'm actually wearing dungarees now. I think they were from h and m and are a navy print, with a white vest top underneath and big gold earrings 90s R&B styleGrin. So comfy too!

HepzibahGreen · 27/05/2020 00:15

Good thing I'm not a man Yearcat.
Incidentally men have always been drawn to me in my dungarees. Maybe it's the challenge of trying to get them off?!

Yearcat13 · 27/05/2020 00:21

Good for you. Though men wanting sex with a female is hardly evidence, given how desperate men are. Seriously good for you but I still think adults in dungarees look like toddlers. It's not sexy.

ShadowyFigure · 27/05/2020 00:39

yearcat women are under no obligation to look sexy. Whether men find women in dungarees hard to take seriously is probably not a factor most of us would be bothered about. How would I feel about a man wearing dungarees on a first date? Umm well it very much depends on the man who is wearing them . Rather a sweet, funny, interesting and honest man in dungarees than a sexist remnant from the 1950s in a shirt and smart trousers .

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 27/05/2020 01:00

Oh my god, yearcat have you heard yourself? My DP says I look like Oor Wullie in my dungarees. I suspect he’s also not thought me very sexy while I’ve had the flu, and literally been crawling to the bathroom. Or right now while I am wearing joggers and a bobbly jumper. He still wants to have sex with me though. Probably because he’s not an arse.

Here are mine, today. Do I look sexy? No. Do I give a fuck? Also, no. Get over yourself.

Dungarees on adults are ok if you are
A)pregnant
B)a plumber

WingBingo · 27/05/2020 07:08

Wow, I wear certain clothes so men find my sexy?

Nope. Couldn’t give two shits about that.

sonjadog · 27/05/2020 07:15

I can safely say that I do not dress with a thought to whether or not men will find me sexy. Tbh, most of the time I would rather they didn't. "Being sexy" is not one of my main aims as I go through the working day.
