I know they look so good 😩 what do you think of these? They are adjustable. Or should I just get some black Birkenstock’s??

They're nice, but if you're unsure about the heavy platform style anyway you might be better off with Birkies. Someone on this thread has really nice studded Birkenstocks in this style...might be @Sooverthemill
Or Teva? They'll be my next footwear purchase I think.

Sickoffamilydrama · 11/06/2020 20:25

You always look lovely, @toastfiend.

My leather jacket is from Karen Millen and I love it: it's so soft!

I love your jacket @itssquidstella. Where’s your hoodie from?

OP posts:
itssquidstella · 11/06/2020 21:01

@happytobemrsg it's the famous Sweaty Betty one!

quantumdog · 11/06/2020 21:16

Yes, nice jacket @itssquidstella !

Thank you all for your kind words today, you're all so lovely and made me feel more confident about venturing outside in something I love but wasn't sure is right for me. Thanks

Sooverthemill · 11/06/2020 21:28

I have these? Try Grenson they several fab pairs in the sale. I cannot buy any as a) I have too many and b) I've just bought an expensive range cooker! Damn

KiteflyingKat · 11/06/2020 22:15

Anyone else following the subliminal marketing thread on here (S&B board)?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 11/06/2020 22:44

Yes, me @KiteflyingKat - I’m a lecturer in marketing/PR.

quantumdog · 11/06/2020 22:48

I've just been to investigate. I didn't read past the first comment saying dungarees look terrible on adults. Whatever... I wish I was paid to influence style though, that would be amazing.
If they took their tin foil hats off for five minutes they'd see that the Lucy & Yak following is like a cult and internet wide. There'd be no need for them to target Mumsnet, home of twinsets and pearls. 😆

Miseryisabutterfly · 11/06/2020 23:07

You all look awesome in your Lucy & Yak. Feck ‘em! crawls back into bush 😂

quantumdog · 11/06/2020 23:08

Sad Sorry, that was quite aggressive. I admit I was mildly annoyed for a minute there. I don't think for one moment that anyone here is a paid influencer. I just think we like what we like, and wouldn't the world be a dull place if we all liked the same things? I also don't think that mumsnet users all wear pearls. Grin

toastfiend · 11/06/2020 23:11

@quantumdog you said what I was thinking! I'd be a bit sad if anyone thought I was posting on here with an ulterior motive. I genuinely just like being comfy and am quite happy to look like "an adult toddler", as someone charming put it. Despite (or probably because of) working in marketing I have so little interest in my personal social media that I'd be a woeful "influencer". I looked at my Instagram page just now and I've posted 9 photos since April 2018 when I set it up. They're almost exclusively of my horses or dogs, none of whom are wearing Lucy & Yak, and I am mainly followed by my close friends and my Mum, who still confuses me as to why she has an Instagram account because she's never logged into it since she set it up and can barely work Facebook. All this means that, sadly, I think the likelihood that I'm about to be paid to conduct some kind of secret squirrel marketing campaign on here is pretty much zilch. Shame, really, as the pennies would help fund my Yak addiction.

happytobemrsg · 11/06/2020 23:21

Wow our love of L&Y has caught some people’s attention (& imagination)! While none of us are clearly planted, I vote L&Y hire @toastfiend 😎

OP posts:
Ellapaella · 11/06/2020 23:41

@happytobemrsg Those of us on the long running Hush thread have been accused of being plants on here many times 😁All I can say is if Hush are out there somewhere reading these threads then yes please, send me free clothes and I'll happily take them! I've been buying their clothes for years and so far my loyalty has only never been rewarded Grin

quantumdog · 11/06/2020 23:47

It's bizarre to me, and so cynical. Confused Whatever your style and whether you love dungarees or not, there's no denying that L&Y are a great brand. Well made, reasonably priced, organic, ethical.
I glanced someone say something about The Ordinary and plants too. Say again? Shock The Ordinary changed my skin after a 25 year battle with adult acne, and meant I could bin products costing ten times as much.
I wonder if they've considered that stuff might be popular because it's just, well....good?

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/06/2020 00:11

From a digital marketing perspective I don’t think it’s bizarre @quantumdog - this is a huge platform with thousands (millions?) of users. I don’t believe for a second anyone on this thread is a plant, but yes, I do believe there are shills on here. If a brand appears to generate a buzz organically, that’s far better for them than generating a buzz via paid advertising or even editorial content in print media, even if they lay the same amount of money, it has more credibility.

I used to work in TV, and while we did popular beauty/clothes segments, the viewers were generally more invested in what the presenters’ lipsticks were, or where their dress came from. The Instagram influencer thing is probably on the way out, but their initial popularity was because they were “trusted friends”. Mumsnet is no different in that regard - loads of posters say a moisturiser is amazing, and I am trotting off to buy it!

quantumdog · 12/06/2020 00:16

Woah, it's like a different world that I'll never inhabit! Shock I don't have an Instagram, or Twitter or whatnot, I'm just a lowly divorcee from the Midlands with a little online shop and a penchant for dressing like a toddler. Grin

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 12/06/2020 00:24

I teach this stuff but am possibly more influenced by marketing than anyone else I know. The adverts on TV are my absolute favourite. (If you want to do digital marketing fir your shop, I can help you!)

quantumdog · 12/06/2020 02:49

@Judystilldreamsofhorses Oooh, amazing! I'd love to grow my business a bit, thank you. It's a bit of a weird one though!

It all just seems a bit odd to me. I mean...if you paid a poster to say your stuff was good but it wasn't, well surely you'd get more bad press off the back of people saying no, it's crap?!
If your stuff's good, on the other hand, do you even need to pay people to say so? But if you do, and your stuff is indeed 'good', what's the problem? It's no different to any advertising, or am I missing something?
Agh, my head hurts and I should just get an instagram account and chill tf out. 🙈

I've just shit in my dungas with all this stress, honestly.

KiteflyingKat · 12/06/2020 08:19

Hope the marketing thread didn’t upset anyone too much. I always bear in mind with Mumsnet that people might not be who they imply they are so I don’t get too invested in other posters. Although I have no reason to think anyone here is not genuine, I accept it’s a possibility.

Today I’m in a Hush top & Topshop Mom Jeans. The jeans are making me realise I’ve definitely put on weight in Lockdown as they used to be really loose now they are tight.

I’m keeping the jeans. Top I’m undecided on (slightly too tight across the shoulders /bust)

I haven't read the subliminal marketing thread but will have a look. I always feel a bit self-conscious if I rave about a particular brand on here because I worry people will think I'm a plant; I mean, I'd be more than happy if Sweaty Betty decides to send me a load of free clothes in exchange for my very vocal love for them, but sadly it ain't happening.

Sooverthemill · 12/06/2020 08:31

New Levi's! Can't fault Liberty service, ordered Tuesday at 915 and arrived Thursday at 12.30. Free postage too

Tee: Fwp by Rae
Jeans: Levi 501 ( will probably cut them but need to decide on length for a bit)
Sandals: air and grace

Bad day yesterday, nurse chased results and the bloody lab hadn't run them and needed fresh sample so we are no further forward a week later. Doc also wanted photo of throat which I had offered 3 weeks ago and was refused and new throat swab. If a GP could visit suitably kitted out this would be all so much simpler and faster. If Nurse can come kitted out for blood test/ swab why can't GP? Do not understand. Am at the end of my tether really

I’ve worked for a corporate entity with a large marketing department for almost 14 years. I tend to be a bit cynical about any kind of marketing. I was initially an R&D scientist and now I’m a patent attorney. I get to see the actual scientific data and compare it to how it’s translated for communication to the consumer. It’s interesting how different the leeway is for different types of products (and of course the rules are different in different countries). For example, in the EU the claims you can make for food products are very strictly controlled by EFSA and will usually require at least a decade of robust scientific data to back them up.

I don’t have the time or inclination to bother trying to be an influencer. I do, however, love my dungarees - and I’ve had positive comments from DD (15) and her friends, so I reckon they look OK.
