Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19 Thread 20

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

I’m a strange person who can handle fragranced ingredients on my face but not on skin on the rest of my body.
If I use any fragranced body wash it flares my eczema and my chest goes beet red.
So my body skincare is a dove sensitive bar and E45.

Skinfulnappies46 · 26/06/2020 10:41

Hello all, I know this has probably been answered ... I normally use aha/bha gel - the DE one TLC framboos every other night. I recently got a sample of the REN AHA Ready steady glow and to be honest it feels like it is doing more than the combined one. I have normal to combination skin and main skin concern is slowing down signs of ageing.
As the REN is cheaper I would happy to repurchase.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/06/2020 11:00

Bo - Laugh laugh away - we have black out blinds, installed initially as DH is on nights and needs to sometimes sleep during the day, but have to say, quite like them.

So, day 2 of using Skin + Me - I have a small spot Shock Shock Normally do not get spots, so am fairly horrified.

Is this purging and a good thing, or not Confused

Jedstre · 26/06/2020 11:52

I’m going to have to try skin and me 🐑 I’m due third bottle of dermatica (I got three free) and as mentioned it’s a short expiry date. I like that azelaic is included in skin and me.

vaz119 · 26/06/2020 12:16

😊Long term lurker (hi) 👋

I love this thread and have followed it for the last few years. You ladies are so knowledgeable!

Over the years this thread has enabled me to find a solid routine that suits my skin and some great staple products along the way

But I'm still really struggling to find my perfect spf and I thought I'd rather ask on here vs the main threads

My skin is dehydrated (can be sensitive as I have eczema) and clog prone on my chin

I had a perfect nuxe tinted one from easyparapharmacie.co.uk but its discontinued 😢. I'm currently using la Roche posay 'shaka' but find it a bit drying

Didn't fancy the often raved about biore as I probably would prefer a cream consistency (and thought it might be drying)

Any suggestions?

ilovemydogandMrObama · 26/06/2020 12:56

Hi Vaz!

I am always always trying to find, 'the one...' so will watch with interest.

Jedstre · 26/06/2020 13:16

Hi @vaz119. Have you tried any of the other LRP spfs? Shaka ones are more for combination or oily skins. There’s an anthelios one that’s more hydrating. Or have you looked at heliocare? I use oil free gel but that they have other formulations that would be more suitable.

cinammonbuns · 26/06/2020 13:17

@vaz119 If you have dehydrated skin then I would recommend the Isehan Mommy UV Aqua Milk sunscreen (very weird name I know). It’s good for dry/dehydrated skin types and I think you may enjoy it.

I’m sure you’ll get many other recommendations from other posters too.

vaz119 · 26/06/2020 13:53

@jedstre I picked la Roche posay because I know it doesn't bother my sensitive skin. I thought the light lotion would dot well under my makeup.. But I'll have a look for something 'thicker' from their range

vaz119 · 26/06/2020 14:02

@cinammonbuns... Thanks for the recommendation.. I'll have a look for that one

I feel like it has taken me forever to be happy with my routine.. Always searching and researching for the perfect 'x, y or z'... But the ideal spf still eludes me

botemp · 26/06/2020 14:34

Hi Vaz you can't be that good of a lurker as I do recognise you Wink

The Bioderma Cicabio SPF 50 is on the richer side without being heavy feeling. Also has some soothing ingredients that will be helpful for eczema.

The purito centella green level is quite similar and also good with beneficial ingredients for eczema.

I think it's Tsm with dry skin and she swears by the skin aqua super moisture gel.

Frezyderm, while not very moisturising but not drying either, it just sits on top of anything. The tinted is nice if you're not too pale.

Thanks for the replies and oh my goodness Bo that was encyclopedic - thank you! I like the idea of DIY so will definitely give the VitC recipe a go. I'm not really sure what I'm after for my body - I don't have problems like KP, just all a bit less plump and taut than it was! I shall experiment and see what works. And it's good to have different price points as some can be for everyday, some for treats or holidays etc.

vaz119 · 26/06/2020 15:13

@botemp... Never a good sign when your name is known 🙈..

I've had some fab advice many times on here. Always feel a bit embarrassed that I don't have much to contribute. I'm not knowledgeable at all . Have just found what works for me.

I'll have a nosy at these... I just looked, the tinted one I used is actually bioderma. I'm not pale at all. So the tinted ones are usually good.

QueenCT · 26/06/2020 16:25

So I ordered a cohorted box off wowcher, £29
I got this in it Shock

Pupsiecola · 26/06/2020 16:52

Wow @QueenCT. Get that on eBay!!

I've ordered several SPFs lately. I like the Neostrata a lot but on days when I don't leave the house or just pop out for a walk I'd like something less spendy. Very concious of upping my game with the retinol use.

This one was horrific on me. I looked like Trump. Been used once. Free to a good home. If you'd like it DM me...

Photoderm Max Tinted [[https://www.boots.com/bioderma-photoderm-max-aquafluide-light-tint-spf-10242628]]

Will probably try the untinted version.

Wow queen ! Definitely fantastic value! I’d be v interested in the hand cream results. I have old lady hands ,although would never pay £81 !

cinammonbuns · 26/06/2020 19:48

Update on the skin and me if anyone is interested. I’ve experienced a lot of peeling on my chin today.

It’s strange as I didn’t at all with dermatica. However I’m not going to be blaming it on skinandme just yet because for the past few days I have been moisturising way less because of the heat, I hate feeling covered in moisturiser when I’m sweating.

However I know that my skin definitely needs more moisture so I’ll be focusing on that the next few days (and luckily the temperature will fall).

Question: is anyone on here using a facial water spray? For example the Evian or Avene thermal water.

It does seem a bit unnecessary but I have heard some people with good results from thermal water and I do have dry sensitive skin so I’m wondering whether it will help.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 26/06/2020 20:27

@cinammon - Hmm, well, I got a spot today which is 2 days after starting and I never get spots. Not sure if this is a good thing or not? Hmm.

cinammonbuns · 27/06/2020 07:59

@ilovemydogandMrObama2

Yes when I started with dermatica I got a lot of whiteheads for a few weeks, I think they called it ‘purging’. I’m not sure how scientifically accurate it is but many people do get very spotty in the first few weeks/months of using tretinoin.

botemp · 27/06/2020 09:58

Vaz I forgot previously. It looks like Altruist launched a new sunscreen (although looks like it's been around for a while) that looks good too. I found the original a bit too greasy and this looks like a more cosmetically elegant attempt with added soothing ingredients. I really like the addition of licorice root extract and centella extract. It's a chemical/physical mix which you don't see all that often here. With eczema/redness in mind it looks like an interesting one. linky

Is that brand actually a known brand, Queen? I've never heard of it (which isn't saying anything) but I'm wondering if it's one of those fake expensive brands that they develop especially for boxes and Tkmaxx to suggest value when they're quite basic probably private label products. At Tkmaxx they always have Valjean serums for under a tenner but they go for extortionate prices on their site. If you look at the INCI they're pretty much the ordinary.

Cinammon I use Vichy thermal water spray but it's not for quenching or 'watering' skin. It's just to mitigate some of the effect hard water has on my skin which otherwise flares up sensitivities.

I didn't have a mass exodus of purging when starting on Tret, I did, however, have the most horrific giant spot ever on my cheek that took forever to heal. I can still faintly see the post inflammatory pigmentation from it 😑

QueenCT · 27/06/2020 10:54

Weirdly I have woken up with a few tiny whiteheads this morning - I changed to the stronger dermatica the past 2 nights!

I'm not sure TBH about the hand cream brand. Felt a little tingly when I put it on but hands feel nice and smooth this morning. The eyeshadow palette is really nice, need to try some looks with it

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 27/06/2020 13:06

Bo oh no - I just ordered a ton of Altruist which I guess will be the old stock?

What is the general opinion of Skin + Me versus Dermatica? and the packaging of Dermatica
