For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

I try Jed but he's a teenage boy. They have used the Biore Watery Essence before but obviously not great for this weather. Thanks. I'll look at that one.

Jedstre · 30/05/2020 23:03

That’s what I suspected pupsie Smile.

ilovemydogandMrObama · 31/05/2020 13:34

@botemp - My bad. I was confused about BHA being salicylic acid, and on that note, I should be using an AHA, so have ordered one while still simplifying my routine Blush

On a separate note have asked for a sample of tinted Heliocare as it looks great, although reading the reviews, seems to come up dark? The Pearl would probably be my shade as fairly ghost white but not Nicole Kidman pale.

SophieLion · 31/05/2020 14:47

How do you know if your timeless vitamin C has gone off?

Keep mine in fridge but it's been there a while as I use it sporadically (probably 4 months). Colour is still clear but I thought it smelt a little different.
Thank you Smile

Usecoooomonsnse · 31/05/2020 18:34

Hello fairly new on these threads. Found the last one by accident. I have reasonably good skin by a mixture of good genes and some luck I would say. I am of Indian origin and grew up in India so didn’t even use sunscreen for the longest time as it was not a thing.

Past year I have noticed jowls and slackening of the skin. I’m approaching 50 this year and would like to get some firmness back. Anyone here tried any form from of facial yoga / exercise ? I’ve been watching some stories in Instagram and wondering anyone here got good results from those.

Thanks a lot.

botemp · 31/05/2020 20:07

Sophie, it'll go from clear to slightly yellow and it's still okay to use then but when it's orange it's oxidised and best not used.

Hi use, unfortunately there's not a lot to support facial yoga/exercises, there's some research that suggest it will encourage further slackening so I'm very wary of it.

MrObama, that's why I like BR P50, it's a BHA, AHA and PHA, keeps things minimal Smile

I have another HS flare on my face Sad
Fairly minimal and hopefully looking at it, it should just be another couple of days before it's gone. Still annoying!

botemp · 31/05/2020 20:15

How annoying Client, is it related to your internal health or just random?

OP posts:
ClientQ · 31/05/2020 20:23

@botemp it just seems to be random
Without ending up in sporners corner Grin it's hard to explain but I find spots basically pop and heal and go, HS drain and scab and drain and... Angry

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 31/05/2020 20:29

@Botemps - Am going to give the PC 8% a try and then may resort to P50. Get the idea that most people on this thread end up on P50 Grin

DD1 and I were debating sequence of moisturiser/sunscreen. She has been checking in with her social media influencers who say, moisturiser then sunscreen. I think the opposite.

botemp · 31/05/2020 20:32

Sunscreen always the last step of your skincare routine. DD wins this one, sorry...

Just ordered my third RP of Timeless Vit C. It's gone up almost £4 since March's order (including P&P). I don't mind too much as before that I was using DE on a loop which was over 2 x the price. But still.

agteacht · 31/05/2020 21:17

Am I right in thinking timeless is the vit C of choice here? Need to buy a new vit C soon...

TattiePants · 31/05/2020 21:43

@Pupsiecola I noticed the price had gone up too. It seems really popular now as a few times when I’ve checked it’s been out of stock. I’ve got a new one arriving tomorrow even though I haven’t finished my current one. I didn’t want to risk it going out of stock again!

@agteacht I’d definitely recommend it.

VillageFete · 31/05/2020 22:46

Hello all 👋🏼

Manic few days and I haven’t managed to pop on this thread. I find it so interesting to read. Hope everyone is coping well in this heat (I’m not!)

Right, since finding this thread I’ve changed my routine. My aim was healthier, brighter looking, more even skin. It looks much better, but I still have a way to go. I think i’ll need to subscribe to Dermatica to achieve what I want, but that’ll be next year.

My current routine is...

Morning -
Cleanse (Olay)
Timeless Vit C
Olay day lotion
LRP SPF 50

Evening -
Cleanse (Olay) If i’ve had quite a bit of make up on i’ll use Superfacialist Vit C oil as first cleanse, Olay as second

PC 10% Niacinamide booster, followed by either Hada Labo HA lotion or BYBI Bakuchiol in squalane oil.

Twice per week PC 2% BHA lotion
Once per week PC 10% AHA overnight treatment

Moisturise with Cerave PM or Neutrogena oil free water gel.

A couple of problems have arisen...

The first is that the creases at the side of my nose are stinging when I put the Vit C or my acids there. On close inspection I have some a few broken capillaries. Could this routine have caused these? I’ve never inspected this area before, so may have missed them. No stinging or sensitivity anywhere else on the face.

Second issue is that I’m breaking out on the right side of my chin/jaw. Quite a few white heads/bumps and one or two very small blackheads. I’ve always broke out occasionally in this area, I put it down to hormones, but could it be something in my routine? Am I best keeping everything away (including SPF) from the jaw besides cleanser, acids and an oil free moisturiser?

Any advice greatly appreciated as always.

botemp · 02/06/2020 09:07

I think normally the Timeless vitamin c is always on special offer through a site wide discount without a code. They currently have a summer sale of specific stock so I assume the price will be back to the discounted price again once that's finished. I buy from the EU site
that only sells Timeless and the site wide discount is there still. It's the same company, just different platforms in preparation for a potential no deal Brexit. Last time I was also asked to leave a review and got a discount for the next purchase.

Fete, I think there's been too many variables to pinpoint as I remember you bought a fair bit all at once, added new things after, and tried some things from a beauty box with mixed results too IIRC. All together it's probably more likely the approach than anything specific.

The visibility of the broken capillieries I would probably put down to the overnight acid, either the exfoliation makes them suddenly visible or potentially the irritation causes them. Although equally it could be irritation in response to something else you're using/tried. Is it glycolic acid or a mix of them?

Depending on the shape of your nose, excess product can get trapped around the nostrils and make it more sensitive as there's just too much of an active ingredient there so you kind of have to take care to do an extra sweep and make sure there's nothing hanging around.

Remind me, were you always a regular SPF user or just recently? I tend to say double cleanse when wearing makeup and/or SPF. If you do single cleanse when wearing SPF then an oil cleanser is the better choice for getting it off rather than a cream based one. It's much more difficult to get an SPF off completely with a cream based cleanser, not impossible but you really have to put in the time and most people don't even manage the minimum of 60 seconds of working in a cleanser.

agteacht · 02/06/2020 13:59

Thanks all, I will look to buy timeless and see if any codes about too. I have been using Oskia and Kiehls - two completely different textures. Which texture would you say Timeless is closer to?

botemp · 02/06/2020 15:38

I'm not familiar with Oskia but the Timeless is best described as similar to water.

OP posts:
agteacht · 02/06/2020 23:25

Thank you! Oskia is similar to that I would say. Will get ordering!

TattiePants · 03/06/2020 14:32

My Verso eye serum arrived yesterday and the texture is lovely; it's so silky.

I've been using tret (0.25%) 2-3 times a week for a few weeks now with no redness, flaking or sensitivity. Am I ok to increase it to alternative days? Assuming my skin continues to tolerate that, can I reintroduce PC 2% perhaps once a week?

VillageFete · 03/06/2020 15:51

@botemp Hi Bo, just after typing that, my period arrived 9 days early, which I don’t think has ever happened before. I think majority of it was hormonal as things have calmed down now, and it was only on right side of jaw.

The broken capillaries may have been there all along, I’ve just never inspected that area around my nose before. They are deep in the creases. That being said, I’ll keep the glycolic and salicylic away from that area as it stings.

In respect to oil cleanser, is it suitable for me to use regularly, even with a spot prone (well, whiteheads) jawline?

SPF - Used it for about 12/18 months, but not religiously ie - cloudier days. Stepped up my game the last couple of months to every day.

@agteacht I have both the Oskia and Timeless. I’d say they are very different. Oskia are oily, whereas timeless sinks in immediately with no residue or shine. I love Timeless.

botemp · 03/06/2020 17:37

Tattie that all sounds sensible.

Fete, yes oil cleanser every night is fine, for mornings it's a bit overkill. The only thing I would caution with since you have some thread veins now is not to do the whole hot cloth thing as all that warmth could make that worse. Just apply oil cleanser on dry skin, massage in (lightly) wet hands to emulsify and rinse off.

ClientQ · 03/06/2020 21:16

My dermatica 2nd month has arrived and they've put it up to 0.5% Smile
I'm getting on better with the oskia vitamin c now I'm only using half a capsule, I find it too oily to use a full one. Broken open a new murad moisturiser for the am after finishing a few samples up

Pupsiecola · 03/06/2020 21:53

Has anyone else who has just gone up from 0.025 to 0.5 via Dermatica has any issues? I've cracked open the 0.05 tonight. I'll probay use it every other night for a couple of weeks and I buffered with half a pump of Cerave.

ClientQ · 03/06/2020 23:07

Yeah I would just go every other night. I have to say I think it's changing my skin, and I was using OTC tret from Spain before. I don't have a single hormonal period spot not counting the HS cyst and my skin texture just looks.. better
