For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

They automatically increased it for month 2. I will monitor closely and delay next month if necessary.

SallieSallow · 23/05/2020 12:23

Tattie I got verso samples on eBay. I used mine up so don’t have one to send you, it made my eyes itchy but was during allergy season so I might try again in autumn/winter. Though given my experience of eye products not really doing anything for me not sure if I’d be willing to pay the price for the full size.

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/05/2020 12:45

@Pupsiecola I'm the same. My first one was 0.025 but the second one is 0.05. My up to using it every night but still on 0.025 at the moment. Not sure whether I have to start the build up process from scratch with the higher dose.

Pupsiecola · 23/05/2020 12:56

I will start with every other night Anne. I seem okay with the 0.025 but I've stripped everything else back, no acids etc. Have to say I really like the Curel moisturiser on a morning after I've done Tret the night before.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 23/05/2020 13:14

Advice please?

DD 13 - wish she would let me take a photo, but her skin is getting worse Sad. Am reluctant to go down the dietary route at the moment as she definitely prone to anorexia, that don't want her to associate skin with food, if that makes sense?

Have ordered the Neutrogena blue light and am looking at Kate Sommerville kit for blemishes. I like that her products have oat which is calming. Any experience?

Pupsiecola · 23/05/2020 13:38

I really like the KS goat milk moisturiser mrobama. My skin can be quite refractive, although hardly ever now since 4 years of this thread. I don't know what else to suggest but sounds very sensible to try to avoid the nutrition route as you say.

agteacht · 23/05/2020 13:57

Thanks @Pupsiecola and @AnneShirleysNewDress I will see what strength arrives next

botemp · 23/05/2020 14:03

Some BHA may be of use, the Paula's Choice 2% liquid or gel, if she's really oily there's a special BHA within their acne range.

If it's beyond that, it may be worth getting a retinoid in (plus sunscreen), not Tret but adapalene/differin or epiduo. Either through GP but I think Dermatica do it as well, not sure what their minimum age is but they do help out teenagers too. Think the boots/superdrug acne clinics (which are cheaper) have a minimum age of 16.

My reservations with KS stand because of the fragrance and other potential irritants, so keep an eye out for any reactions.

Thanks Pupsie as she is over 12, have started her on probiotics, and may try a few Kate Sommerville products. Poor thing is so self conscious she doesn't want to leave the house... Sad Sad

Was thinking of calling our GP, but not sure what could be prescribed as not keen for her to go on the pill at 13...

AnneShirleysNewDress · 23/05/2020 17:04

I've done the same pupsie, stripped back everything else. Had a little redness to start with and some dryness but have been ok since.

Jedstre · 23/05/2020 17:36

Month two of dermatica arrived yesterday and automatically increased to 0.05 strength of tret.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 23/05/2020 20:16

So, after much tears and drama, DD1 and I sat down and came up with a plan for her:

Am

LRP demo cleanser
Paula's Choice 2%
LRP - fluide
Helio SPF - one of the things not up for discussion - I am mean Smile

Pm

LRP demo cleanser
CeraVe Pm -

Neutrogena Blue Light once a day - evening.

My preference is to keep the products to a minimum and let her skin breathe. Her preference was to load up on lots of products she has read about on Instagram by various, 'influencers..' Suppose the truth lies somewhere in-between...

Thoughts?

botemp · 23/05/2020 20:34

It's brilliant, just mind she builds up the acid use. And if it's not enough consider benzoyl peroxide, think it's sold as acnecide in the UK, cleanser and/or moisturiser in the pharmacy, it's strong though. Bleaches your towels so give her some old ones.

On the subject of towels/flannels, let me be mean and insist she use a clean one on her face every day. Pillow cases should be changed weekly but twice a week might be better.

And some Chocolate for the tears and some Wine for you.

Pupsiecola · 23/05/2020 21:03

Well done MrObama. Would it be a stretch to mention not putting her face in hot shower water if possible, and to make sure hair products aren't running down her face?

ClientQ · 23/05/2020 21:34

Acnecide is the only thing that sorts my acne when it's bad. I go back to basics so effectively the acne org regime which is wash face, acnecide, moisturiser. It does dry skin and yes to the bleaching!
But if my spots are that bad I forget everything else, serums etc and just strip it back to that. Haven't had to do it for a while but it always works

Jedstre · 23/05/2020 23:02

mrobama great advice above and remind her not to touch her face. I’ve noticed my son getting spots on his chin where he touches it. My skin is quite oily and personally I don’t like LRP dermo cleanse as it feels like it leaves a film on my skin, (although less so if removed with a flannel)

Pupsiecola · 24/05/2020 08:50

Sallie, off topic but No mentioned on our hair thread that you have a Shark cordless. Would you recommend? (Want a cordless but anti-Dyson). Thx.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 24/05/2020 09:12

Botemp - It's so difficult especially with teenage girls, please don't be offended those with teenage boys. She is such a beautiful girl, plays flute in orchestra, studies most of her waking moments, and used to being in control, if that makes sense. Thank you for your support.

Pupsie - Great advice - hadn't thought of that.

ClientQ - She has tried Acnecide, but seemed to irritate her skin even more, which was so depressing. She ended up with her spots being more red and inflamed.

Jedstre - You are sooo right. She was at her lap top yesterday and she had her hand on her face, which she hadn't realised and was doing it unconsciously. I think I do it too Blush

Re: Cordless - watching with interest Smile

TattiePants · 24/05/2020 12:23

I have two G-tech cordless hoovers - the upright and the hand held one and would recommend both.

ClientQ · 24/05/2020 12:39

@Pupsiecola mine is corded but I have a shark (had a cordless dyson before) and it's fantastic

Pupsiecola · 24/05/2020 13:40

Thanks guys. Nice to know there are alternatives to Mr Dyson.

SallieSallow · 24/05/2020 15:19

Pupsie Yes I have a cordless shark and I do like it but it struggles to deal with my long hair that sheds absolutely everywhere, the roller thingy kept getting clogged up Blush I’ve now invested in a corded Shark with anti hair wrap technology and it’s the absolute business. Not sure if they do a cordless version, they didn’t when I got it but might have brought one out now.

I have an upright G-tech too (inherited from my Mum who absolutely loved it) I don’t find it that great but Mum had it for a good few years so think it might be on it’s way out Sad

Pupsiecola · 24/05/2020 17:37

Thanks Sallie.

73kittycat73 · 24/05/2020 18:29

Hi, I'm looking for some advice for my mum and wonder if you can help me please? She's 69, has no skin care routine apart from washing with soap and water, has sensitive skin. She has developed a couple of age spots on her cheek and wants to find something to take them away (She also has freckles on her face and body if that matters?). Do you have any recommendations?
TIA (I will be back on, just cooking tea! Grin )
