How often do you remove all your make up (if you wear it) before bed?

Question prompted by discussion with a friend. I have always removed all make up, scrubbed face, and moisturised before bed. No matter how tired, drunk, or whatever. Same with brushing teeth. These are non negotiable bedtime activities. Friend claims that plenty of people go to bed without removing make up - hadn't considered this before but I'm surprised (like, doesn't it make the pillow grimy?!)

Do you cleanse before bed? Or just roll into bed and worry about it later?

(No disapproval implied AT ALL btw. I have plenty of nasty habits! Just genuinely curious.)

Every night, no scrubbing though.

wowfudge · 21/04/2020 23:36

Always. The only time(s) I haven't done involved being very drunk as a student and falling asleep fully clothed with the light on.

QforCucumber · 21/04/2020 23:38

Always. Dont scrub, just a cleansing balm and then a cleanser wash. Tone and moisturise.

flouncymcflouncerson · 21/04/2020 23:40

Most of the time....not always! Just now my skin is amazing cos I’ve been pampering myself with all sorts of new lotions and potions Smile

SephrinaX · 21/04/2020 23:40

I remove it all every night and moisturise. Although when I was in my teens/early 20s I sometimes didn't bother.

theneighbourswindchime · 21/04/2020 23:41

Cleanser and occasional moisturiser but why do you need to use a facial scrub every day???

Butterymuffin · 21/04/2020 23:41

Always do. Very rare exceptions if I'm exhausted or unwell and fall asleep before I can, but even then I generally will wake up a couple of hours later and then I'll use a cleansing pad at least.

RefuseTheLies · 21/04/2020 23:41

In my 20s, especially I’d been out drinking, I’d sometimes fall asleep in my make up. In my 30s, I removed it religiously every single evening.

In my 40s now and can’t be arsed with make up at all any more. If I do put it on, I wear it for as short a time as possible, then wash it all off as quickly as I can. I hate the feel of it on my skin now.

Arseit · 21/04/2020 23:43

Pretty much never.

SomeHalfHumanCreatureThing · 21/04/2020 23:49

Never.

MrsSnitchnose · 21/04/2020 23:52

Every night. Use make up wipes, then a scrub, then a foaming cleanser. Moisturise morning and night

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/04/2020 05:52

I always cleanse. I can’t imagine how my skin would look if I didn’t.

Smarshian · 22/04/2020 05:54

About 50:50. Sometimes I just can’t be bothered!

SinglePringle · 22/04/2020 06:04

Every single evening. Whether I’ve had make up on or not, I cleanse twice and then various serums and retinol.

jeremypaxo · 22/04/2020 06:11

99 times out of 100, I cleanse, tone, apply serum, apply face oil.

The other time I'm usually drunk!

Peridot1 · 22/04/2020 06:13

There have been very very occasional nights when I haven’t but generally I do. Double cleanse, toner, eye cream, serum and moisturiser or facial oil. Also Double cleanse if I’ve had spf on without makeup. Which is generally the case these days.

snappycamper · 22/04/2020 07:02

Almost never

BillywilliamV · 22/04/2020 07:06

My 16yo daughter sleeps in full slap, wakes up pristine and then takes it all off.
I think she Facetimes her boyfriend in the wee small hours.

Bluntness100 · 22/04/2020 07:07

Nearly Always, I just use a simple cleanser. The only time I don’t is when I’ve had a very late one with guests over, but it comes off the next morning,

happystory · 22/04/2020 07:08

Every night. I have to moisturise otherwise my skin would be so taut in the mornings, so cleanse and moisturise at bedtime.

Ughmaybenot · 22/04/2020 07:14

Every night! The only times I haven’t have been when I’ve been too drunk to take my shoes off on my own let alone my make up, and then my husband will do take it off with a wet wipe cause he knows how fussy I am 😂 and I very rarely do that anymore.

dudsville · 22/04/2020 07:15

Always. I was the type of clubber who'd come home in the early hours, drunk as i could be, but I'd still make eggs on toast, have tons of water and shower (including a hair wash because in those days smoking was still allowed) so that when i woke up the next morning i felt that but more comfortable. Waking up to a cleansed face it's just nice. It's like wearing fresh clothes daily. It's gentle, low level self care.

Ginfordinner · 22/04/2020 07:17

Always. Even when large amounts of alcohol have been imbibed. I hate going to bed with unbrushed teeth and with make up on. I have excellent skin, which is probably a result of this.

Those of you who sleep in make up - Why? What do your pillow cases look like? Don't you feel grubby?

sniffysnuffler · 22/04/2020 08:56

This is interesting - thank you for responding!

Quick clarification: when I said I 'scrub' I just meant 'wash thoroughly', not that I use a scrub product. I'm super low maintenance. At night I wet face, massage in some apricot kernel oil (think I discovered the oil cleansing thing on MN a few years ago) then wipe off a couple of times with a hot flannel. I find the oil removes even waterproof mascara so no need for separate products. Then the cheapo blue Nivea. In the morning i just use hot water and a flannel, moisturise with vitamin E cream, and use sunscreen if it's bright and I'm going to be outside.

Facial skin is very delicate though, you’d be better off long term being very gentle with it.
