Royal style: forget all your stresses as we talk royal dresses

Now. A request. Can we please keep this to critiquing the clothes rather than the wearer?

So if you want to talk about what Meghan's wearing then fine, go ahead. I'm not even saying you have to like everything she wears. This applies to all royal women - if you don't like an outfit then do feel free to say so.

But if you want to talk about "Megxit" then please go to one of the many many other MN threads about it and leave us to our clothes chatter!

Both of my grandmothers and my mother were very good at sewing, especially dressmaking, and I learned to sew from them. I enjoyed it and became fairly accomplished, but I eventually gave it up because the pattern adjustments for my tall but short-waisted body just became too difficult, and I don't have a lot of patience. Dresses are especially challenging.

SenecaFalls · 12/01/2020 12:57

Also to add, my one fashion tip for short-waisted women: have a professional bra-fitting. It makes a huge difference to have a well-fitted bra, especially as we age.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/01/2020 13:16

Speaking of bras, didn't Rigby & Peller get their royal warrant taken away as the owner wrote about fitting the Queen? Or did I completely make that up??

@queenofarles Nobody dares be anything but conformative when the UK tabloids chop them to pieces for anything ANYTHING outside a very very narrow norm - with the UK public screaming along baying for blood in comments etc. floating over the public execution of Woman Not Wearing Clothes the Right (albeit largely undefined) Way. It’s very much a case of ask and ye shall receive. Nor has the RF managed to work out what they are supposed to be doing with all this clothes-horsedness. The Queen has worked out that old and monochrome = I’ll be seen and that’s grand. But that’s it. Compare to CPV who isn’t that interested in fashion really but has found her niche of always always promoting Swedish designers and in other ways sending subtle messages through her clothes. The UKRF don’t even get the headspace to work it out in your media image. I wouldn’t enjoy being ripped to shreds publicly for being dressed.

AppleKatie · 12/01/2020 13:26

I think I’ve read the Rigby and Peller thing Queen no idea if it’s true but I don’t think it was you that made it up Grin

banivani · 12/01/2020 13:29

No the R&P thing is correct, we have talked about it before I’m sure!

Thisenglishlife · 12/01/2020 13:41

Beatrice B and Letizia manage to look appropriate, polished and sexy... And Lettie is nearly 10 years older than Kate.

Kate has a long torso and not so long legs for someone of her height. That's why she looks so good in long waisted trousers. Meghan is the opposite, average height with a short waist and long legs for her height. Tried to find photos to illustrate this.

@CurlyWurlyTwirly I would love to visit Tokyo & Albion art amongst other places.
Though in the meantime I will have to be satisfied with looking round their 'virtual museum' www.albionart.com/period-list/

I particularly like the emeralds of Empress Ekaterina II of Russia (see photo above)

Yes, the R&P owner wrote a book I think and then was most indignant that the warrant was taken away. I don't think she said anything particularly out of turn but I guess the feeling was that she'd been indiscreet enough.

As an aside, one of the hardest things to buy if your long in the body is a swimsuit! or sexy teddy type lingerie but that's not been a problem I've thought about in a while Grin

pastaparadise · 12/01/2020 13:48

Enjoyed the link of a pp. Attached a pic of Catherine the Great's crown- what a whopper! It must have been hugely uncomfortable. Were all the Russian crown jewels melted down or did many survive?

frugal are you telling us that your airing cupboard relationships are chaste 😂

frugalkitty · 12/01/2020 13:53

Tracy no, just that these days I prefer comfort over style Grin

Back from my folks, we were talking about the recent royal events, and my mum was telling me that her friend went up with some beavers a while back (not mum's group, one of the others in the area) and said that Kate came over and was chatting with them and was absolutely lovely. (Something to do with the idea that scouts need a group younger than beavers, who start age 6 and Kate's involved with the Scout movement). Given my mum tells me everything at least three times usually, I'm surprised she missed that little gem out.

iknowimcoming · 12/01/2020 14:01

I loved Eugenie's wedding tiara but whenever I see those pics I wonder if there was a veil planned but she scrapped it last minute because it was such a windy day? Although I suppose it would've (slightly) covered her scars which she was keen to show off - hmmm?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/01/2020 14:05

Thanks for that link @TracyBeakerSoYeah
Those Russian emeralds are stunning.
The drops look like the emeralds in the Vladimir tiara.... which were originally on the Delhi Durban tiara.
I love these interchangeable jewels and seeing them worn on different RF members through history

Love those emeralds!!

The rugby and peller thing is definitely true. I had zero sympathy for her. You dont talk publicly about any woman's bra fitting. Ever. But an older woman who happens to be queen is even worse.

I once couldn't help myself from telling off a teller at Mark's in lingerie department. She was picking up each bra before scanning it and saying the size out loud, very loudly. When I challenged her she told me she was making sure the size was what was on the hanger and I pointed out that most women dont want their bra size hollered across the store. I was buying a massive t shirt and pyjamas for the specific purposes of giving birth/breast feeding in as was 39 weeks pregnant at time.

ElspethFlashman · 12/01/2020 14:15

M&S have a longer length swimsuit. Gets good reviews, I've often thought about getting it.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/01/2020 14:19

HM going to church today.
I like the jaunty Feathers in her hat.
Perhaps she is wearing the same shade of brown as Meghan; to show a bit of empathy. It’s rare that she wears such muted colours when she is on «show»

Peter Philips is visiting. Perhaps each grandchild spends a weekend with her whilst she’s at Sandringham.

@frugalkitty There's always tankinis too if you can't find a long enough swimsuit and don't want to wear a bikini.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/01/2020 14:25

I haven’t been to the V&A in a long time; but I’d love to see their permanent jewellery collection

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 12/01/2020 14:33

Rigby & Peller stripped of Royal Warrant

SenecaFalls · 12/01/2020 14:33

Yes, to whomever invented tankinis, many thanks. I also like that you can mix and match tops and bottoms.

QueenOfTheAndals · 12/01/2020 14:36

I don't think I've ever set foot in a Rigby & Peller but I assumed it was for those who required a bit more ahem, support.

I am enjoying seeing the photos in the press of Meghan from a few years back in her jeans/shirts/sandals. She does this look so well and I hope we see more of it.

I am a similar shape to her and I will be definitely be swiping up on insta if she adds links to her photos and I won't begrudge her the affiliate money either Wink

Seriously though this split is going to be epic from a fashion perspective.

QueenofLouisiana · 12/01/2020 15:08

@SenecaFalls love that headscarf (and also the real-life dog).
