Royal style: forget all your stresses as we talk royal dresses

Previous thread

Now. A request. Can we please keep this to critiquing the clothes rather than the wearer?

So if you want to talk about what Meghan's wearing then fine, go ahead. I'm not even saying you have to like everything she wears. This applies to all royal women - if you don't like an outfit then do feel free to say so.

But if you want to talk about "Megxit" then please go to one of the many many other MN threads about it and leave us to our clothes chatter!

Loved Zara's wedding tiara, but probably one of my least favourite royal wedding dresses.

MrsGrindah · 11/01/2020 07:47

Thanks Queen Would you mind doing us all another favour? Could you be a poppet and use your connections with Royal Sources and ask that the Royal ladies are given double the amount of engagements this.year ( esp, evening ones) ? Just to ensure we have plenty to talk about? Ta very much

WineOrGinOrBoth · 11/01/2020 07:47

Thanks for the tread Queen

Thread!

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2020 07:52

Thanks for the new thread. That last one didn’t last long!

I was given Lady Glenconner’s book for Christmas and as predicted it was a quick read. Very interesting reading about Princess Margaret. She did not seem like a happy girl really. I think she’d have been happier if they hadn’t become the RF really. She was fairly wild and I’m sure exciting to be with. I suppose a lady-in-waiting is a PA now, I don’t know. All the details like having to search out the loos before a visit somewhere and then waiting outside if she needed to use them, I thought fascinating, do they still have staff to do all this? It’s sort of a best friend role I think.

AppleKatie · 11/01/2020 07:55

Aw waking up to a thread with three pages of fashion is a lovely weekend treat. Loving the tiaras they deserve more wear- if you’ve got em wear em and all that. Thanks Queen and everyone else!

WineOrGinOrBoth · 11/01/2020 07:59

Talking of Loos-

I can’t remember if I’ve ever mentioned that the D of Gloucester visited my dcs school - years ago now. She needed to have a loo at her own disposal & she had to be asked a few times if she needed ‘a comfort break’. She was quite tiny in the flesh & well groomed. There was a 2 page list of instructions but Unfortunately I don’t remember much else.

MotherofPearl · 11/01/2020 08:00

Going back to the topic of favourite tiaras, I think for me it has to be the Greville, especially as worn here by Camilla with the astounding 5 strand diamond necklace. I think this should be enough diamonds to satisfy even @CurlyWurlyTwirly!

Looking for a photo of the Greville I came across this piece on Camilla's jewellery collection. She has some staggering bling!

@TraceyBeaker

Thanks for that link.
There must be quite a few old families where the tiara has been passed down a few generations and there is no lifestyle to wear it.
I wonder if it’s the kind of shop which allows browsing!

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/01/2020 08:02

You definitely need Camilla hair to carry off that tiara!

AppleKatie · 11/01/2020 08:04

Wow! Camilla knows how to wear the jewels! Her head/face/neck shape suits a tiara and massive necklace, she’s lucky I don’t think all the royal women look as good in that much at once.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 11/01/2020 08:06

@MotherofPearl

Thé Greville bequest is quite astounding.
Ropes of diamonds should look tacky; but I say more is more!
I think someone needs to crack open some of Queen Mary’s stomachers..
Maybe Kate will add on a few more jewels as age gets older.
She was wearing quite a few at the last outing in the black velvet dress

hopeishere · 11/01/2020 08:08

Loving the tiaras. I'm rewatching Downton at the minute and love the dresses and jewellery!

WineOrGinOrBoth · 11/01/2020 08:09

Fabulous bling there.

DobbyTheHouseElk · 11/01/2020 08:13

That necklace looks so heavy.

Jewellery is meant to be worn, it shines so brighter when it’s warm and next to skin. I don’t think they wear it frequently enough. Kate should be allowed to wear some of the big stuff now. Also Sophie needs more bling, why isn’t she allowed the better stuff.

Thread meet-up with tiara trying on?

Spudlet · 11/01/2020 09:06

I was a bit torn on that black dress on Kate, it was a lovely elegant shape, but I felt the black made her look a little gaunt - navy might have suited her complexion better. But the bling against the black looked amazing Star

Maybe Sophie just isn’t a bling sort of person?

beanaseireann · 11/01/2020 09:11

Thank you QueenoftheAndals.
What will this week/ thread bring ?

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/01/2020 09:14

@Spudlet apparently that dress was navy but photographed as black. Navy velvet can look wonderful in person but the true colour and texture rarely comes through in photographs.

According to Tatler / DM upcoming society weddings
Princess Beatrice and Cressida Bonas.
Wonder when Lady Kitty Spencer is getting hitched

QueenOfTheAndals · 11/01/2020 09:22

Is Kitty definitely engaged or was the DM jumping the gun? That strata of society usually announces engagements in the Times or Telegraph and I've not herd anything about that.

AppleKatie · 11/01/2020 09:28

I wonder if once Charles is King more bling will come out as at the moment the ladies can’t be seen to upstage the Queen who can’t wear much of the heavier stuff anymore? Just speculation of course.

I’m not a fan of either Mike or Zara’s outfits there.

MotherofPearl · 11/01/2020 09:30

Goodness, I'm afraid Zara's dress is a big miss for me - colour, style, the lot.
