Royal style: forget all your stresses as we talk royal dresses

Now. A request. Can we please keep this to critiquing the clothes rather than the wearer?

So if you want to talk about what Meghan's wearing then fine, go ahead. I'm not even saying you have to like everything she wears. This applies to all royal women - if you don't like an outfit then do feel free to say so.

But if you want to talk about "Megxit" then please go to one of the many many other MN threads about it and leave us to our clothes chatter!

I actually think Kate’s frame really suits those high-neck, long-sleeved dresses. They have to suit someone! She looks very “Duchessy” in them and it’s a smart move to wear high street occasionally.

I hate the coat. I think the people of Bradford deserved a better coat. I’m sure she’s wearing tights, she’s a tights-girl. I thought the interaction between her and Will was a tad forced on his part. For the first time I felt an undercurrent of...something.

Whattheother2catsprefer · 16/01/2020 09:25

PinkSun but they do show - at least they do on me if they are going to work. I have to have a bit of sock/ tight above the back of the shoe or its red raw bleeding feet. So if I use the little footlets I have to pull the back up higher than the shoe (and inevitably you can see the occasional glimpse at the front or side) but you can't see any sign of anything lurking on dutchess feet. I'd be a very unstylish mass of blisters.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/01/2020 09:36

What is the "royal secret" that allows them to wear shoes bare foot without shredding their feet?

Apparently it is a well known 'A' list trick when going tightness to wear shoes that are a size too big, to avoid rubbing. Fine for standing around on red carpets but very inconvenient if you have to do much walking, I should think. It's why Meghan struggles to walk in her shoes, you can see in close up photos that there is quite a bit of gapping at the heel.

Kate always wears tights, so her shoes are a better fit and stay on.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2020 09:49

Royals can wear heels because they're driven everywhere and aren't really on their feet for very long. If Kate or Meghan had to walk to the bus stop or tube station then I'm not sure they'd wear such high heels!

@QueenOfTheAndals

Dead right!

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 16/01/2020 09:58

Also, I wouldn't recommend wearing too big shoes as a solution. You end up with quite damaged toes as your weight is thrown further into the shoe.

I haven't tried it myself but I should think an anti chafing product like Lanacane might work.

Hmm, funnily enough I was thinking about this today.

First off, Kate's a complete ⭐️ for the royal family, and they are lucky to have her.

But she does dress very primly, and older than her age. Pussy bows and high necks are tricky - they might suit her physically but they just look a bit formal and boring IMHO. When she's already formal and..
I'm not going to say boring ... predictable?

I don't think her style is edgy enough to carry it off - she ends up looking staid and frumpy. Which might partly explain why the consensus seems to be she's much better in a bit of sparkly, full-length evening wear - it's a bit daring and different for her.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 16/01/2020 11:14

Interesting to see the DM's headline. She looked fine, but I'm not sure 'dazzling' is the word I'd use ... headlines: Kate the 'dazzling duchess' and Putin's Kremlin revamp www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-51129880

I would imagine William has had a tricky week trying to balance his response to Harry as a brother and the needs of the Royal family as a business.
I know I have had situations where personal feelings about something and the needs of a wider group haven't been easy to reconcile and I haven't had the world's press scrutinising me.

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 16/01/2020 11:41

Does Harry have a new suit? That is the best dressed he has been in a long time. He even has nice shoes on!

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 16/01/2020 11:50

Oh good! There's really no need for the DM's 'shows how it's done' take on it is there? They're just being antagonistic to Meghan. Still, it looks like a very successful visit for W&K, with lots of happy, smiling photos etc all over the place; they put on a good show.

Saw this rather mad tiara the other day. It's alarmingly tall!

I love the prim pussycat bow dresses on Kate, being so tall and slim I think she carries them really well and that makes up for her lack of edgyness, but I must admit a fondness for that style I loved it when Madonna used to wear them a few years back.

BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 16/01/2020 12:02

That tiara is very “Miss World” I rather like it!

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2020 12:17

I just caught a glimpse of my reflection and realised - patterned midi dress, knee-high boots - I'm turning into Kate!

I rolled my eyes so hard at the DM in the supermarket today I think I may have sprained something. 😑

Gooseysgirl · 16/01/2020 13:15

Totally typical of the DM, hate filled rag

banivani · 16/01/2020 13:24

Really like that portrait of Queen Margrethe.

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/01/2020 14:15

Just seen this gorgeous pic of Diana on instagram. It's from her Mario Testino shoot but I'd not seen it before.

That is a beautiful picture.

beanaseireann · 16/01/2020 14:57

There is a photo of Meghan in the DM, posing with other women involved in the Justice for Girls charity in Vancouver. Sorry I can't do links, perhaps someone could post it please.
For someone who normally looks stunning she really doesn't stand out amongst them, imho.
