They went through so much too young - boarding school, parents indiscreet phone calls made public, divorce, Diana's death and the aftermath, I'm sorry this is going so wrong just now. I'm not sure that baby in Canada, mum flying off to the west coast?, and dad staying in the midst of family conferences is a great show of unity from the Sussex family.

frugalkitty · 09/01/2020 23:56

Interesting article in the DM about the rift between William and Harry, which says that Meghan had wanted to wear a tiara for the wedding that had previously been worn by Diana. I haven't heard that before only that the one she'd wanted was possibly dodgy somehow (gift or something to do with the stones?) but I'm not sure which this could be. The Spencer tiara, not the Queen's to lend, the lovers knot, possibly but then the dodgy bit wouldn't fit, so that leaves the emerald necklace that Diana wore as an improvised headband/tiara on tour down under. But again, that doesn't fit the narrative. So that's no closer to knowing what actually happened I know, but I thought it was an interesting twist in the tale. And the one she wore was lovely anyway!

DuchessofWoke · 10/01/2020 00:01

I think the whole mess is a tragedy for the brothers who have already had difficult lives and relied on each other so much.

PinkSun9 · 10/01/2020 00:19

My understanding of the situation re the wedding tiara is that Meghan was shown a selection of tiaras to choose from. She chose one with emeralds. The courtiers in charge of showing the tiaras then said oh this one is not available. H&M said why not or why was it offered as a choice if it was not available? I think it must be at that point Harry is supposed to have said "what M wants, M gets".

My speculation is that the emerald tiara M chose was the one which was already chosen beforehand by Eugenie for herself and the courtiers made a mistake in showing it to H&M. To save face they later said it was the Vladimir tiara, which i think firstly was not offered and even if it was, it was completely not M's style or one that she would have chosen.

Afterwards the Q chose a tiara with a similar design to Eugenie's one for M which had only diamonds.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 10/01/2020 00:23

Apparently HM is not minded to remove their titles because of the backlash over Diana losing her HRH. They are concerned it would look vengeful.

Ironically I think the public would be right behind her if she did.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 00:26

Throwing 'bad mother' at her is a poor show even for the DM.

However, it provides ample evidence of what they are facing, MM in particular, in the UK, and it can all be used to back up their decision to leave the tabloids to it in Britain. Once H&M are out of sight and out of mind they will find someone else to pick on. They probably have lots of candidates lined up. Carol Middleton?

The Queen could end this tomorrow remove the title and succession problem and let them get on with their lives with her blessing

While Andrew retains his position and title and income?

What message would that send?

Josette77 · 10/01/2020 00:33

They want out, they can leave. This is nothing but a cash grab to sell merchandise with SussexRoyal on it. American tabloids will be and have been brutal as well. They are already turning on her.

PinkSun9 · 10/01/2020 00:34

If the Q removes their RH titles, that action would be seen as quite vindictive.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 00:39

Nobody takes American tabloids seriously. They are considered to be jokes. They are sold beside candy, batteries, books of sudoku puzzles and other such stuff at supermarket checkouts. Before people had smartphones you might see the odd person picking one up to while away the time waiting in line but not any more.

SenecaFalls · 10/01/2020 00:41

American tabloids have very low readership. Most people can't even name them, much less care what they say.

CurtainCorner · 10/01/2020 00:41

There are press reports that Charles has said he will not be writing them any blank cheques.

PinkSun9 · 10/01/2020 00:52

H&M both are reported to have gone back to Canada, not M alone as reported by the DM earlier. Dm will never stop muddying the water.

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan Had Discussed Plans to Step Back with the Queen and Senior Royals
As the duchess returns to Canada, sources tell BAZAAR.com why the Sussexes forged ahead with plans to step away from their senior royal roles—and how the royal family are helping realize them.

BY OMID SCOBIE JAN 9 2020, 4:12 PM EST

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan’s 195-word statement announcing plans to step back from their senior roles may have come as a surprise to members of the royal family, including the queen, but the news itself? Not so much, sources tell BAZAAR.com.

Senior aides reveal that conversations about the couple’s future plans and ambitions had taken place internally “on all levels” for several months in the run-up to their so-called “bombshell” on January 8. It was information that the couple had planned to hold back from the media until logistics had been further fleshed out among households, but after their agenda was leaked to British tabloid The Sun, “they felt they had been cornered,” says a source close to the couple. “It was a case of act now or lose control of something they had spent a long time working on.

Surprised, yes, but the royal reaction, says a high-ranking palace aide, was “far from the dramatic emotional response described by some—nobody was ‘incandescent with rage’ and nobody is about to punish anyone. The speed at which this now needs to be dealt with is not ideal, but the plans themselves are not a problem. This is not a ‘crisis,’ it’s a case of helping the couple reach their goal.”

That goal, or a version of it, is now expected to be achieved within a matter of days, a Buckingham Palace official confirms. The queen, Prince Charles, and Prince William made calls on Thursday to direct their teams to liaise with governments and the Sussex household to find workable solutions—fast. Conversations, which included Prince Harry, took place throughout the day.

No change of requests for the duke; the couple’s vision remains ambitious but achievable: create a new working model that allows them to blend a balanced mix of official duties in the name of the queen and their own independently funded philanthropic interests, which will be anchored by the forthcoming Sussex Royal foundation. This financial independence, which includes no longer taking from the government-funded Sovereign Grant, will allow the couple to choose charitable projects more freely and, says a source, “work at an uninterrupted pace that present conditions don’t allow.”

One change the couple have been keen to tackle is finally taking control of the coverage surrounding their work, which is currently ruled by the self-governed Royal Rota—a pool system that allows only British newspapers and tabloids to gain up-close access to their official engagements (other outlets are forced to remain in the dark). “The Cartel,” as the couple have come to know the group of royal correspondents, have been a longtime sticking point for the couple. “They saw the current model as outdated and in desperate need of change,” says a source, who notes that previous attempts to change the current system had been repeatedly met with dead ends. “It became clear that press, including foreign media and digital outlets, to have access to their work, they would have to self-fund their own engagements.”

It’s these ideas—“a phased approach,” says a spokesperson—and more that the couple began carefully putting together at the start of fall last year. Tying a bow on their proposition is SussexRoyal.com, their official website that currently serves as a detailed explainer of their future roles. Put together away from the palace, the site was written by an individual known to the couple and designed by Made by Article, the same Toronto-based company that successfully produced Meghan’s now-shuttered lifestyle blog The Tig.

“Very few people were involved in the process, but those who were managed to keep information of the site confidential,” says the Sussex source. The online hub has already received millions of visits since its launch and the couple have also been inundated with supportive messages from charities and organizations they have worked as well as close friends around the world.

This evening, Meghan is expected to make her return to Canada, where son Archie Mountbatten-Windsor has been under the careful watch of close friend Jessica Mulroney and a nanny. Harry will follow shortly. “They’re feeling confident,” says a friend. “Harry and Meghan are aware that they’ll be criticized, perhaps even vilified, for taking control of their lives but creating a positive future for themselves and their family has always been their priority.”

DuchessofWoke · 10/01/2020 01:21

Ah, Omid Scobie. He is apparently Meghan’s mouthpiece.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 01:35

He is doing the very necessary work of clawing back control of this event by stating that the timing was due to the Sun's scoop, that everyone knew the plan was in the pipeline, and that all that has changed is the pace of discussions.

Above all, he is doing the RF a massive favour via this statement, especially if it isn't the truth, clawing back the tatters of their image.

H&M are far better at PR than the royal sycophants and they have hired far more talented people to work for them than the RF has.

Horsemad · 10/01/2020 01:59

I'm confused as to why they couldn't do what they want (step down as 'senior' royals), yet stay in the UK.

To be fair, the Cambridges seem to manage the balance between being on show occasionally and having a private life, as does Princess Anne, so why can't the Sussexes do it?

DuchessofWoke · 10/01/2020 02:00

math you usually write so sensibly but tonight I fear you have drunk the kool-aid.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 02:29

Because the racism has been so blatant and so shocking, Horsemad. Press coverage has been vicious - MM would have experienced absolutely nothing like this in the US or Canada. Nor would she have experienced the misogyny directed at her for touching her own belly while pregnant.

mathanxiety · 10/01/2020 02:32

I don't think they are concerned about losing out on a private life. Both have been in the limelight for years. I do think they are trying to find an environment where they can use their fame and position to champion causes dear to them without the constant heckling of racists, misogynists and xenophobes, especially for baby Archie as he grows up.

itswinetime · 10/01/2020 02:42

H&M are far better at PR than the royal sycophants and they have hired far more talented people to work for them than the RF has.

I don't agree with that the royal family has its hits and it's missed in terms of PR I agree. But while I can see the massive uphill battle the Sussex's have had with the press. I think their PR on the whole is messy as disjointed and not that effective.

By having their regular mouthpieces speak for them they are helping themselves as much as the they helping the RF. The bombshell announcement was being seen by some as them either trying to force the queen's hand, throwing their toys out of the Pram and or being rude/spoilt not running past the queen in particular. Smoothing that over is best for both sides.

Neither side of this are covering themselves in glory from what I can see though.

Encyclo · 10/01/2020 05:23

Tom Bradby has now said that there were rifts dating back to harsh words spoken around the time of the wedding.

He must have clearance to say that. If so, Harry is not feeling in the least conciliatory.

ElspethFlashman · 10/01/2020 06:31

Oh that's just Omid Scobie.

I take what he says with a pinch of salt, as he's just their pet PR. He sold his soul to them long ago.
