I am not going to buy clothes in 2020

I have a stuffed-to-bursting wardrobe and I have everything covered from beach to snow to weddings and parties. I don't need to buy any more clothes, I need to lose 2 stone so that everything in my wardrobe fits me.

I have just binged in the sales and have bought another 3 dresses, 2 tops and a pair of work trousers. I really, really don't need anything. Anyone else?

Buy a couple and try them on at home and return the ones that don’t fit.

It you aren’t comfortable in the changing rooms then don’t use them - life’s too short to be trying to pull up a pair of jeans with one hand whilst hanging onto the join on a flimsy door-curtain with the other, and simultaneously trying to look up and down at the gaps in the changing room walls to spot a camera or phone peeling through.

LoisWilkersonsLastNerve · 28/12/2019 14:29

I have done this in the past and it was easier than I thought to be honest. I think the only things I had to buy were bras and socks. It made me a bit more creative with my looks and a couple of times I was dressed better as I only had good quality stuff left to wear after my casual stuff started to go bobbly etc

Lordfrontpaw · 28/12/2019 14:30

I’m lucky that I stocked up on underwear on summer holiday this year (yes we have exciting times abroad)!

xJodiex · 28/12/2019 15:05

@lordfrontpaw thanks I will do that, it's a better idea.

Trumpton · 28/12/2019 18:27

I am planning to write everything down that I buy and shop from my wardrobe .
I have been doing one thing in and one ( or two ) things out and that concentrates the mind beautifully .
Currently having chemo so not sure about weight loss and will have masectomy and reconstruction in the spring but already have post surgery bras and pants and pjs etc as op was postponed to allow for chemo.
So I don’t think I need to buy anything for the foreseeable future .

DuchessMinnie · 28/12/2019 18:42

Yay, I'm not the only one. DP thinks I won't last a month but I am really determined. I need to pay off my Next account and my credit cards so I have a huge financial incentive to do this. I need to go through my wardrobe and sort it out as some of the space is taken up with stuff that could go on eBay.

I would love to do this but have lost a couple
Of stone and still need to buy a new swimming cossie. Old bikini slips off in waves! I kept loads of slim me clothes through my fat years so have what feels like a new wardrobe without having to buy anything. Except the cossie.

woodhill · 28/12/2019 18:54

I agree with apples about wearing old scruffy stuff.

I tend to shop when I am bored and love clothes

Zenithbear · 28/12/2019 18:55

I will need new jeans, bras, one more bikini and possibly a new pair of winter boots for work next autumn. That's all I will buy next year.
I bought quite a few summer/holiday items this year so they should last a while.
I started cutting back on clothes buying years ago and have saved a fortune.
I hardly ever even bother with charity shops anymore.

Zenithbear · 28/12/2019 18:57

I don't even bother to replace things anymore as I have that many clothes.

Almahart · 28/12/2019 19:02

I’m going to do this. I’ve wanted to before but I feel that something has shifted. I literally can’t fit anything into my wardrobe and have lovely clothes I never wear. Amazingly I haven’t even bought anything in the sales. I am so sick of the ordering online/sending back cycle and I will be relieved to be done with it

BumbleNova · 28/12/2019 19:04

I need to join! I buy too many clothes and wear a fraction of my wardrobe.

I've downloaded the style book app and I must start using it. Time to start wearing everything I have. I needed a wardrobe revamp after pregnancy / breastfeeding but things should be more stable now.

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/12/2019 20:30

I'm thinking of giving this a go - I've ordered some stuff in the sales and need a few bras (ordering from Ewa Michalak in Poland so may take me past 1st Jan) but after that I'm calling quits.

I'm also thinking about doing a low-spend beauty year. I won't manage no spend as I don't have a years supply of basics (foundation, mascara, concealer, eyeliner) but I have all the eyeshadow, lipstick etc I could possibly use. So I might make a replacements only rule - if I use something up I will allow myself a replacement.

StatisticallyChallenged · 28/12/2019 20:30

p.s. anyone found a good wardrobe app for android?

XingMing · 28/12/2019 20:48

I had an (almost) no new buy 2019, except that I replaced basics like underwear (DEFINITELY not buying secondhand), sportswear and white T shirts.

Yesterday I bought new black jeans in the posh shop sale. I've learned that your body changes, so you can't recycle everything again, which was the cue for a charity shop drop (twice), and that at 63, when I mostly wear jeans, trainers and tops, I would rather just buy the best version of what I wear everyday and wear it everyday.

Almahart · 29/12/2019 07:53

I very rarely buy new clothes now, my weakness is eBay but that is a monumental faff as for every bargain there are two things that aren’t right and I feel obliged to realist them rather than take to the charity shop. I’ve got a huge pile of things to list by the side of my bed.

DontFundHate · 29/12/2019 08:19

I'm in. I've done this for the last few years but always seem to forget I'm doing it by about September, something about the cold makes me think I need new cosy winter wear! I have bought a couple of bits in the sales this week.

I always look out for bits in charity shops
Unsubscribe from emails
Unsubscribe from postal things from shops
Kondo'ed my whole house about 5 years ago
Did the styled by Susie so now I know what suits me, how to put things together better etc
I get shoes and clothes fixed so that I can keep enjoying them
I also always plan to do a no spend toiletries and make up except to replace, I loose my way with this much more quickly than with clothes!!

Going to give it another go this year. But I think I'll just take December off as that seems to be my most tempting month and as it's only one month of the year I'll allow myself that Crown Smile

Neoflex · 29/12/2019 09:26

Does anybody fancy doing a clothes swap?
I have so much lovely stuff clogging up my wardrobe... I just can't fit into it.
And I don't think I am ever getting into this stuff again. I was an 8-10 but post baby more 12-14.
Maybe someone out there is trying to get rid of 12-14 after losing a load of weight to get into an 8-10?

Ragwort · 29/12/2019 09:34

I honestly can’t remember when I last bought a ‘new’ item of clothing - apart from underwear - (10 years maybe?). It’s really quite liberating, I do buy from charity shops but I’ve cut down on that as well, I seem to have so many clothes. I just don’t go into clothes shops or even look on line. (I used to work in fashion retail and the unethical practices and shallow people put me off for life).

DuchessMinnie · 29/12/2019 20:20

Have been busy uploading photos onto Stylebook- it's taking ages. I think my dresses alone will hit triple figures Blush

I have found my people. I have two double wardrobes and a walk-in cupboard full.of clothes. At the last count I had over thirty pairs of jeans and five pairs of near identical black suede ankle boots and that when I realised I need to just stop.

This year I am determined to only buy new underwear when necessary and absolutely, definitely no more jeans. And I have unsubscribed from all my shopping sites.

BlackSwan · 29/12/2019 20:37

I should jump on the wagon with you. I really should. There's too much happening in my wardrobe. I have shopped constantly for the past...x years. I'm not sure how long I'll last.

Moominfan · 29/12/2019 20:38

Ok not new but i shop second hand a lot! Costs next to nothing so don't feel guilty finances wise but could still do with cutting down

MontanaSwing · 29/12/2019 20:40

I’ve realised that I have only a few items I wear - jeans, black tops and white tops. I dress for comfort now and don’t buy clothes for how they look as I’ve realised it doesn’t matter! I much prefer nice blue jeans and a white top.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2019 20:50

I've been wearing the same few things on rotation due to breastfeeding ( need for access) but I'm stopping daytime feeds so time to wear stuff that doesn't have easy access!
