I am not going to buy clothes in 2020

I have a stuffed-to-bursting wardrobe and I have everything covered from beach to snow to weddings and parties. I don't need to buy any more clothes, I need to lose 2 stone so that everything in my wardrobe fits me.

I have just binged in the sales and have bought another 3 dresses, 2 tops and a pair of work trousers. I really, really don't need anything. Anyone else?

I had some Christmas vouchers and used them for some good staples - smart work shoes, white shirt and underwear.
For the rest of the year, I’m only going to buy second hand with the exception of running shoes, socks and underwear

Snog · 01/01/2020 21:30

Haha!
I made it through Day 1 even though mumsnet sent me an email about loads of sale offers.

LaurieFairyCake · 01/01/2020 21:35

I'm buying nothing else though I have bought 3 jumpers, an umbrella and 8 bras in the sale.

But that's it, I'm done. And I need everything I bought as I've lost 3 stone and gone down a bra back size so I had to have them.

3 more stone in 2020 to go...

sheenapunk · 01/01/2020 22:00

Clothes and wardrobe building is a mammoth task- there are so many variables. It's a bit of a nightmare.

Women probly knew more in the past as they sewed, and were taught. It's not you!

(Maybe I should create the book/app? I've been thinking about in 2020!)

Ikeameatballs · 01/01/2020 22:11

I’m going to try to reduce what I buy. TBH I’m really bloody picky so order stuff online and then send it back for being not quite right.

I’ve got a hush sales order that is all going back and another order for two items coming. I’ll see what they are like as I have a couple of events in Jan. I’ve also got some shoes coming from the Next sale but they are replacement work shoes.

My general plan is to try to hold off until Easter and then get some decent spring/summer stuff as I could do with some nice t-shirts, an alternative to jeans for the weekend and some more summery work gear, always the hardest for me to get right.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/01/2020 22:29

I'm slowly cataloging my wardrobe- 48 dresses logged so far and i reckon there is another 20 at least.

Waiting for a few pre January purchases to arrive (how slow is cos shipping ffs ) but i made it through day 1! I'm gradually unsubscribing from mailing lists to reduce temptation.

Whatdayisit2 · 01/01/2020 22:52

I saw a good tip on face ache. Turn all your hangers around and when you wear something put the hanger back the normal way. Items on backwards hangers get binned at the end of the year. I thought it was a great idea

peachypetite · 01/01/2020 23:08

Ive just stuck some stuff up on eBay. I’m really going to try and only buy items if I absolutely love them. How many times have you bought something because you think “that’s okay” or it will do, wear it once or twice and then realise it isn’t that flattering anyway. Argh!

BarchesterTowers · 02/01/2020 07:36

If I lose half a stone I already have a whole new wardrobe....and if I lose a stone then I’ll need to buy some clothes! Can’t help thinking rejigging my diet and exercise will be better for me in the long run than browsing sale websites.

Skyejuly · 02/01/2020 07:37

I am only buying second hand and operating a very strict policy of donate something before adding more.

Lordfrontpaw · 02/01/2020 08:57

Well in my clear out I found some wool dresses and a few suits that I forgot I even had! So that’s work clothes sorted!

SpeckledyHen · 02/01/2020 09:27

I have already started a ‘one in one out’ policy with bags and will be doing the same with clothes. Either selling something or sending to charity before buying anything else . Also going to try pre-loved market, eBay / charity shops / swishing before buying new .

SplatPancake · 02/01/2020 19:41

@Trumpton, good luck with it all. I was in exactly your shoes almost 10 years ago.

My ops and chemo weight loss (I’d also just given birth) meant that when it was all fine again, and I finally felt like shopping I had NO IDEA how to even dress myself again - the body I’d been used to buying for was gone (in a good way!)

I used the money I hadn’t spent and went off to a John Lewis personal styling afternoon and came back with a small but incredibly versatile capsule wardrobe in shapes, styles, brands and colours I wouldn’t even have looked at before - and 75% of it I still wear regularly. I’ve added a few complementary bits over the years, but not loads — I haven’t needed to. (Except jeans, the bane if my bloody life...)

So good luck with everything you’re going through, and treat yourself at the end of it x

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 02/01/2020 22:32

I listed some things on eBay this morning. I am going to try and list one thing a day.

DuchessMinnie · 04/01/2020 16:25

Day 4 and still going strong. Today was a big test as I took DD into town to exchange a duplicate Pandora charm and I have been very good. Early days but I think I can do this.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 04/01/2020 16:39

I was idling round town waiting for DH ( risky eh?) I looked in M&S and resisted a jumper .

It was my size
It was a nice colour ( wine/purple)
V neck not roll necked or polo (which overheat me)
Wool mix (better and better)

£15

But , I resisted , it looked like it might be too short (I'm going to look online to convince myself I was right Grin )

BaconAndAvocado · 04/01/2020 19:06

Brilliant idea!

I'm going to try my very very best to join you.

I buy 90% of my clothes from Primark but I do an awful lot of them.

Not sure if I could extend this to make up though as I have a longstanding addiction to buying lipgloss........

DontFundHate · 04/01/2020 20:44

@Whatdayisit2 I did this last year, it was really surprising to see which items I hadn't worn as I would have been sure they were things Id wear, but nope, so they're gone now. It's a nice thing to do end Dec / beginning Jan with NYR in mind etc.

I bought a nail varnish yesterday. It was.kind of to replace something that I used to use a lot of about a year ago. I've noted it down and the price in my diary.

Keep going everyone

Ikeameatballs · 04/01/2020 20:50

I bought heaps in the Next sale today, didn’t try any of it on in store, did at home and it’s all going back!

MrsGrindah · 04/01/2020 21:00

There’s no better feeling than losing weight an rediscovering your old clothes. I’m on the way to that now and reckon just another half a stone and everything will fit perfectly. Then I really do not need any more clothes this year.

LishaFlynn · 04/01/2020 22:24

I’m in! My wardrobe is full to bursting and I have two more storage bags of summer clothes and going out stuff. I also do a major cull every 4 or 5 years due to lifestyle or body shape changes so nothing is that old or worn. My motivators are:

  • to rediscover lovely things I already have
  • to have less impact on the environment
  • to save money
  • to be more creative and flexible in what I wear

My main weakness is online impulse buys for lifestyles I wish I had not my reality. So my main resolution is no more internet shopping.

In a good start I dyed my fave black skinnies yesterday rather than binning and buying a new pair.

Oh though if anyone is selling a preloved Blair or Monument coat in black from All Saints size 10 let me know 😂

thedevilinablackdress · 05/01/2020 08:14

Great list of motivators Lisha
I also want to appreciate the things I already have and stop feeling the constant 'need' for something new.

woodhill · 05/01/2020 08:46

I'm the same. Always want new but buy the same colours and styles. Perhaps a longer skirt now.

I love buying in sales.

I do wear most of my clothes though.

HotelRoomforOne · 05/01/2020 08:52

I love clothes but I am so stuck.
Breastfeeding a 6 month old.

I have collected beautiful clothes that I really want to wear but I am so far from the weight I was when I bought them. If I sell them they are gone forever.

The relentlessness of 3 young children has resulted in 15 extra kilos. I don't even know who I am anymore.
Sick of breastfeeding, have done it for almost 6 years now, over three children. I feed and feed and get bigger and bigger. Post births my body feels like a demolition yard.

I wish I would've known this was how it was going to be at 37. Nobody tells you the truth. Not your own mother, or anyone else.

Yet I keep buying the beautiful clothes, mostly from eBay but even eBay designer clothes in Australia cost a pretty penny.

They are in my wardrobe. It is actually insane continuously buy clothes without trying them on. The hard work should be done in the changing room.

I am with you. Not buying anymore clothes. Focus on losing the weight instead, wear leggings and a t shirt for a year. Just get it done.

Ardnassa · 05/01/2020 08:54

5 days in and haven't broken yet, despite serious temptation.

I know that sounds ridiculous it is an achievement for me. Vintage clothes are my hobby: I even collect (and wear - but it's definitely a more intense relationship than just buying and wearing) dresses by a particular midcentury designer during a particular phase of his designs in the early 1960s.

All my clothes are beautiful. All worn regularly. But I have enough. So thank you for starting this thread - just thinking of it has helped me stop whenever my finger has been hovering over the "buy" button on Etsy.
