I am not going to buy clothes in 2020

I have a stuffed-to-bursting wardrobe and I have everything covered from beach to snow to weddings and parties. I don't need to buy any more clothes, I need to lose 2 stone so that everything in my wardrobe fits me.

I have just binged in the sales and have bought another 3 dresses, 2 tops and a pair of work trousers. I really, really don't need anything. Anyone else?

Not RTFT so apologies if someone has already mentioned this but there’s a great Instagram account called @notbuyingnew, which is really inspirational for this kind of thing.

3rdNamechange · 17/02/2020 18:33

Ooh great idea , I waste too much money on clothes

3rdNamechange · 17/02/2020 18:37

@notbuyingnew and @knickersmodelsown are great but I always look dreadful when I'm trying to be 'cool' Grin

Djangor3725 · 21/02/2020 11:26

I have bought a craft board & a fabric cutter this month, but no clothes and will be using the cutter to start converting 2 dresses that no longer fit into skirts. I don't need any new clothes or shoes for spring or summer; aiming to look at my shoes and see if anything needs resoling though. I need to mend a couple of pairs of curtains as well and make a new peg bag.

chazbl · 21/02/2020 15:57

I'm trying to do something similar - good luck to you!!!

DuchessMinnie · 23/02/2020 17:41

So impressed with anyone who can design and make clothes- I would to be able to alter things. I have very slightly fallen off the wagon as I stupidly went off for a week of skiing without my slippers and had to buy a pair costing 12 euros. I couldn't have managed without them though so it was essential.

Now need to lose at least 2 stone as I have tonnes of summer clothes which are all too small.

I've bought next to nothing. Been spending the money saved on holidays in a lovely destination I'm hoping to move to. So much more worthwhile!

Jmommy · 26/02/2020 10:00

Well done all! I haven’t bought anything in 2020 yet. But will be returning to work from mat leave soon and likely need at least new pants for that. Trying to remind very mindful regarding any purchases, though.

Jmommy · 26/02/2020 10:01

@MrOnionsBumperRoller that sounds much more worthwhile indeed! Immediately curious what this lovely destination might be Smile

notespeciallyno · 27/02/2020 11:25

DuchessMinnie what have you used to get your months clothes show like that? Is that an app??

DuchessMinnie · 28/02/2020 07:26

@notespeciallyno it's an app called Stylebook. Think it cost £3.99 but worth every penny. I still have to catalogue all my summer clothes which are in the loft but it's given me a very good idea of what I have. Haven't even started on my shoes...

I failed with this challenge as I got a load of striped tops and a pinafore dress from the Sainsbury’s 25% off. Saying that though I now look at my wardrobe and really don’t see any gaps (except with shoes). I’d been after a petite denim pinafore for a long time so now that’s done. There really isn’t anything I need and I don’t feel I have an excessive amount of clothes. I’m going on a weekend away with some old friends soon and one of the activities will be a shopping day. There is nothing I can think of that I’ll be looking for so I’m hoping to be an interested bystander that day. I’ll have a look and maybe try some things on but will do my damnest not to buy anything. Posting on here has continued to remind me to make sensible purchases, less frivolity!

Almahart · 29/02/2020 07:33

Hallo. I think I am going to give up buying clothes for Lent. I never do Lent but my 9 yo is really into it this year and I know he won’t let me get away with any slippage. It makes me feel a bit nervous if I’m honest, I am really addicted to phone browsing/shopping.

I had a bit of an epiphany last week, bought new jeans and a jumper and realised that they are almost identical to some I have and not even as nice. The chair in the bedroom is overflowing with clothes already. What a waste of money.

Deathraystare · 29/02/2020 15:14

I was going to be that person. But.. bought 2 pair boots. One pair stretch look boots to go with dresses and skirts. Small welly type thing. I bought 3 new dresses including one I wore to my Aunt's funeral. After poo-pooing ASOS for their curvy style (mostly high neck, show your knickers and fat thighs) outfits I saw 3 dresses I liked. So I bought them. But 3 pair of shoes going back to Kaleidoscope as far too narrow.

Ardnassa · 29/02/2020 15:36

Everyone is doing so well! Have bought some tights (holes in previous ones) and spent money on getting some more of my existing clothes tweaked and tailored this month.
Also finally wore out (and broke) my favourite tan pointed flats in Milan so used some of the money I have saved from no more clothes purchases to buy the Ferrari of tan flats.

So I feel I am doing OK as these purchases (replacements) are allowed.

StatisticallyChallenged · 01/03/2020 13:27

I'm still hanging on, just about.

Annual bonus has landed here so I have a nice (second hand) bag on the way. I had always planned that. Between the bonus and matched betting/casino I've got enough to pay off biggest debt in full and still buy a few treats - so I'm sticking to my rules and paying off faster than planned.

I do need to buy more tights but snag are out of my size!

TheClitterati · 02/04/2020 14:03

How's everyone getting on with their no spend on clothes?

This month I spent £40 on some fabric (to make 2 dresses). But only because I was in the cool fabric shop area which I ahvent been to for 2 eyars and I am unlikely to get there again any time soon.

I made myself a really cool coat with fabric I've had at home for years - so a new item of clothing but not purchased.

But no clothes have been bought. I have looked online occassionally and then caught myself and moved on. I like developing this way of being more conscious about expenditure.

thedevilinablackdress · 02/04/2020 14:19

Bought a dress pre lockdown from COS in the sale. First 'new' purchase in a while Andy m ok with it as it was well considered. Not buying anything at the moment to take pressure off delivery services for essential stuff.

Dowser · 02/04/2020 20:06

I got three dresses today . They were brand new for the summer. From my favourite shop.they were already marked down ..why I don’t know
I heard they Were in trouble last year and I don’t want them to disappear completely
So a bit of a dilemma

BorsetshireBlueBalls · 03/04/2020 22:07

Hello all, just found this thread. So I bought very little last year - basically some replacement gym gear - and my priorities this year are to pare down and actually wear the clothes I have. My plan was only to replace things that were done to death and would leave genuine gaps if not replaced. Also to be brutal about getting rid of things that no longer suited me, like shoes that were too narrow and uncomfortable for my middle-aged feet! And I have managed to lose a little weight, so I am enjoying more of my wardrobe than I did last year.

So, I replaced a couple of coats with a nice houndstooth one in the Jaeger sale, and I filled a gap in my wardrobe with a black cashmere polo, also Jaeger, 'cos I needed that, right, and it will go with skirts, over dresses, and trousers. But coronavirus lockdown means that I only ever wear tracksuit trousers and jumpers all the time now! Damn!

Djangor3725 · 05/04/2020 11:06

I have bought replacement trousers, walking boots and 2 bras this year. All been immediately worn & have easily worn them 30 times each already this year. Have been vaguely tempted by a summer dress but I am hugely fussy now - colour, fabric, construction - all have to look just right. I stopped ordering to just see if it is OK which I used to do a year or so ago. I am keen to support the very small brands, often family businesses or providing work for local women in rural areas, but I am pleased that unions are objecting to the way that the big online companies like Asos & Boohoo are carrying on.

Toastandplums · 06/04/2020 15:41

I’ve not bought any for financial and environmental reasons. If you’re struggling and need some inspiration, I’ve just watched a great documentary on Amazon Prime called Alex James: Slowing down fast fashion. Stacey Dooley did a really good documentary on fast fashion too. And another one on Prime is the true cost’

Solomaliar · 08/04/2020 10:19

I think I cut it down to 10 items of clothing last year but many of these were direct replacements that couldn't be avoided eg new pair of jeans and home clothes to replace ones that were going into holes. I wish it could be so easy with socks for the whole family, it seems to to me they are vanishing some how. Found nice shop vitsocks.com/en/, they often do sales and the quality is pretty good.

CherryMargo · 13/07/2020 20:04

So I didn’t buy anything since February 18th but… broke my no-buy on June 26th, and bought a new pair of shoes. So I’m starting all over again, and now my total result is 256 items across 25 categories. Meanwhile the only item I managed to get rid of was a pair of worn out socks! 😓

The good news is that during these months I’ve managed to create an elaborate inventory database for my items and the example below demonstrates what type of information I plan to gather about each ‘used up’ item before I throw it out.

Category: Hosiery
Brand / item: Gentle Grip socks
Size: 4-8
Material / Fabric: 69% cotton, 20% polyester, 10% nylon, 1% elastane / a mesh knit top, the rest is plain knit
Ornament / Colour: bayadere stripe / black, white, grey, pink & purple
Vegan? / Sustainable? YES / NO (my assumptions, because the company’s website has no relevant information)
Length of use: autumn 2013 – April 10, 2020
Paid: unknown, but the current retail price is approx. £2.33 per one pair
Notes: good for those who suffer with poor circulation – the top is strong enough to hold the sock up, but not so tight that it leaves a ring; flat toe seams prevent rubbing and blistering; VERY durable and do not bobble or shrink after repeated washing
Would I re-purchase? YES
A total number of items left in the hosiery category: 75 (socks – 43, stockings – 4, tights – 28)
A total number of clothes/shoes/accessories left: 256

How is everyone else doing? I hope this thread can be revived 🙏

NathanNathan · 16/07/2020 08:39

Great thread! I hope this isn't against the spirit of it, but I wondering if anyone had an my eBay shopping tips?

How best to search, or look through categories to find things you want perhaps?
