I am not going to buy clothes in 2020

I have a stuffed-to-bursting wardrobe and I have everything covered from beach to snow to weddings and parties. I don't need to buy any more clothes, I need to lose 2 stone so that everything in my wardrobe fits me.

I have just binged in the sales and have bought another 3 dresses, 2 tops and a pair of work trousers. I really, really don't need anything. Anyone else?

I'm in!
I can't think of anything I need for 2020 and I have too many clothes.

I find it quite difficult to get rid of things but have made a bit of progress on this. Goals for next year are definitely to buy way less if anything and to slim down my current wardrobe.

StatisticallyChallenged · 29/12/2019 21:22

I'm waiting for a couple of sale bits to arrive - I have tonnes of stuff but simultaneously needed a refresh because of the breastfeeding/changed shape after pregnancy. But once this appears (and mostly gets returned...) then I'm giving it a go. I think my rules are:

-download an app and try to log wardrobe
-I'm allowed to buy underwear and basics like tights/vests if they wear out or rip
-I'm allowed to buy replacement make up/beauty only (so I can replace foundation when existing is used up) but no lipsticks, eyeshadows, blushers, highlighters, contour - basics only.
-If I get my fat arse moving again I may need to buy trainers/sports stuff (but this is functional, I'm not someone who ever wears sports clothes unless exercising)
-No fucking shoes (my collection is ridiculous)

I'm due my annual bonus around March time and will maybe allow myself one handbag or jewellery purchase (second hand) from that, but no clothes!

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/12/2019 21:44

I posted about thus on Instagram this morning, so I am in too. My DP was made redundant just before Christmas so I can’t afford to be shopping anyway, and realistically I could wear a different outfit every single day for a year, and still have change.

TheReef · 29/12/2019 22:08

I've just taken 2 jumpers and 2 pairs of leggings to the charity shop this weekend. Leggings don't fit and the jumpers I've had for about two years, put them on, hate them and take them off again.

I'm going to try and throw away one item a week. I'm terrible for hoarding clothes 'just in case' I probably have stuff still with tags on that are a couple of years old. That'll be me buying things to make myself look better when I know they can't as it's my weight that I hate about myself and not the clothes

MontanaSwing · 29/12/2019 22:12

@Judystilldreamsofhorses love the name Smile. I want to listen to that now.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/12/2019 22:38

montana such a good song!

ethelredonagoodday · 29/12/2019 23:25

I'm Also keen on doing this, and aiming to just buy second hand wherever possible.

BarchesterTowers · 30/12/2019 06:04

I did this 3 years ago. Prompted by a redundancy. We weren’t skint but I wasn’t sure how things were going to go.

Nothing new except underwear for a year. And 2 pairs of trousers for work.

I saved a lot of money and felt better. I’m still restrained about shopping, more thoughtful.

gingersausage · 30/12/2019 09:09

I need to get organised and do the Stylebook thing. I lost two stone and had a mass culling out session but I need to streamline what’s left. I then do not need any more clothes. I also need to get what I culled listed on eBay. It won’t make me any money sitting in boxes.

Fast fashion is my weakness; I never spend much in one go but how many black Primark T-shirts do I need? My other problem is ordering masses of things online and then feeling crap when they all look awful and I send them back, which is obviously appalling for the environment Blush.

TheHoundsofLove · 30/12/2019 09:11

I'm planning to only buy things that I actually need (underwear, running kit etc...) too. Like everyone else on here, I absolutely don't need any new clothes and have any eventuality already covered. Prompted by sorting through all my clothes recently and coming across so many things that have never been worn and I'd forgotten I even had Blush , I'm going to make a real effort to 'shop my wardrobe'. I've decided to actively choose a few different things to wear each week and find ways of working them into an outfit. I've downloaded the Stylebook app and am looking forward to the challenge.

BlackSwan · 30/12/2019 12:39

I have every eventuality covered too - but tend towards buying dressier things - rarely ever casual. I don’t care what I look like when I walk the dog or mooch around at home... but if I’m going to work it has to be spot on.

MariaSV · 30/12/2019 15:37

@Neoflex

I'm super up for a clothes swap! I have a ton of clothes, shoes and bags that need a good home.

BlackSwan · 30/12/2019 16:57

Confession - I was asked on a shopping date and immediately accepted. It’s not going to work out. I’m a lost cause.

RoseMartha · 30/12/2019 17:00

I am going to try and only buy items that need replacing. I can think of three things I will need to replace. Which will cost under £100 altogether. I havent got a lot of clothes but money will be even tighter in 2020 so will need to make do with what I have got.

Sh0na · 30/12/2019 17:02

I have been thinking this too.

Sh0na · 30/12/2019 17:03

I said the same thing last year and I got as far as April I think. Lost my way a bit after April. But getting things altered at a local tailor helped me through it a lot.

Feelinggoodashell · 30/12/2019 17:13

I have pledged no clothes shopping for all of 2020 unless charity shops! I spend way too much. I know I will find it hard but I do it mainly to boost my self esteem so I am hoping this will force me to do other things to feel good about myself

Ardnassa · 30/12/2019 19:36

Agree with Shona that getting things precisely tailored is absolutely key to really loving the clothes you already have. Am lucky that my local seamstress is superb and unafraid to tackle even hardcore vintage alterations.

StatisticallyChallenged · 30/12/2019 19:56

I'm pretty handy with a sewing machine so i think I'll be altering too. I have a fair stash of material too so might make myself a few things when the itch gets too bad

mizu · 30/12/2019 21:18

I'm the opposite and my entire winter wardrobe takes up half a clothes rail. I am a bit of a one item in one item out kind of girl and usually buy on ebay - i have some really nice TOAST items and all my clothes are lovely but i don't have very much.

However, we went to London for Christmas and i splurged - oh it felt good - and now have quite a few actual new items. I can really see how people get addicted to buying clothes cos it was such fun. I am now skint though Grin

thedevilinablackdress · 31/12/2019 09:25

I pledge to stop buying on eBay as a hobby! As a PP mentioned, the successes can be fab but the failure rate is high.
Also, online shopping must be terrible environmentally - all those individual packages and deliveries.
Vintage/charity shops or nothing this year.

Lordfrontpaw · 31/12/2019 09:27

I have got a mountain of clothes to go through - they are just piling up all over the bedroom. Time to roll up my sleeves and Marie Kindo them.

Astrabees · 31/12/2019 09:32

I usually have a bit of a splurge in the post Christmas sales but this year can't find anything at all I'm very excited about, so won't be buying. I have plenty of clothes except for those I'll need if we have a good summer.
I'll save what I usually spend so that next winter I can have some good quality items to top up.

StatisticallyChallenged · 31/12/2019 09:48

For those who can't get stylebook, I'm on android and trying out the yourcloset app which looks quite good so far

Sooverthemill · 01/01/2020 17:28

I'm up for this, well realistically I couldn't probably last a whole year but apart from underwear I'm not buying anything until at least April and will try for the whole year. Unless DD1 gets married this year then I will have to buy a dress! But hoping it won't be until 2021
