Help me choose an amazing dress

I 'may' be having a significant birthday soon. I was hoping to get a dress made but two local dressmakers have proven useless, so might want to buy one instead.

I'm size 14, used to be hourglass but now a bit rounder, busty. I'm very fussy! I want something that feels dressy but could equally well just be worn with ankle boots and a biker jacket to the pub. Would prefer it to have at least short sleeves, and not be polyester. Black or red probably my best colours, or maybe a dark print.

Budget up to about £200 for something really amazing.

Sorry I can't do short links and I may be way out but what about this?

'Please could you let me know what sort of costings I'd be looking at for a cotton dress'

Is that really all the information you gave them?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 21:12

I like that, Helpneedmoreshoes.

Lucked - it's nice but too high necked.

God no to a picture. Imagine a little hobbit with big boobs. Not fat as such, but curvy.

Hmmm I may well be totally off the mark but this website is worth a look I think .
I ordered a selection of dresses from here last time I had the need for a fabulous dress-
You can search for ‘with sleeves’ too

Am aware Gina bacconi isn’t exactly ‘edgy ‘ but I love this dress ..

Or this?

helpneedshoes · 27/12/2019 21:14

Which one?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 21:14

Multivac - I'm just going to ignore you now. Sneer away in a vacuum, or go away. Or play nicely.

Tah dah

I know it's polyester

multivac · 27/12/2019 21:15

Rightyho, OP. Seventy more pages of links that Aren't Quite Right coming up! :-)

Liveinthepresent · 27/12/2019 21:15

Oh I overlooked the poly
Issue that might mean my suggestion is a total dud !

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 21:15

Sorry, but I don't like the sparkly ones.

I can't link the realisationpar website but lots of nice options on there. I like dresses that are a bit cool, dressy but not & they often come up trumps.

SproutsAreForLife · 27/12/2019 21:18

@multivac oh bore off, Remus gives masses of advise on here, and recipes so deserves some reciprocation.

multivac · 27/12/2019 21:19

I did actually start somewhere kind, honest. In that, when I am hoping for an amazing outfit, I tend to rule out a few things that are actually based on my low-self-esteem image of myself, rather than what I really look like (so in my case - I rule out anything with a fitted waist, because I want an androgynous figure)... in your case, OP, I wonder if showing off your arms might not be as terrible as you think, really?

helpneedshoes · 27/12/2019 21:19

Have you looked at the Maje sale?

Lucked · 27/12/2019 21:19

I already know this is too prim but Paul Smith

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 21:19

Thanks, Helpneed. Will have a look.

Quite like this on the Whistles site, but think it's probably too high necked.

I loved the last dress you liked...VW Anglomania... any chance you have the stamina for some weights... 2kg and 50 triceps dips a day might trim the wings to make it wearable? How long do you have? (Age says it would fail on me as I notice the texture of my skin slackening daily, regardless of muscle tone and mass).

Cool but flattering dresses for older women would be a massive niche for an ambitious designer.

cultmaskid · 27/12/2019 21:20

I think the billy one will cling in not great places tbh, it looks like the arms are squeeze

I liked the dresses linked to for silk Fred but they are cheap

What about Maje

If it helps I have big boobs and wear lots like the shape of the Whistles one, prints help to distract a bit & sometimes I don't want cleavage on show.

Pupsiecola · 27/12/2019 21:21

Apologies: I've not RTFT as am currently in the Alps with a dodgy wi-fi. OP you have described my figure in your OP. I turned 50 recently and struggled to find a dress. Then I tried on a bunch of jumpsuits in Phase Eight and tbh could have bought 4 different ones. I never would have considered a jumpsuit but the one I got was perfect and unlike anything the 50 guests at my party were wearing. I wore it with suede high heeled ankle boots. 2 months later I wore it to be work Xmas do.

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 27/12/2019 21:22

I like the 'too prim' one. Paul Smith stuff is so lovely, but doesn't work terribly well for my shape because he doesn't cut for busts.

Thanks, Sprouts.
