Help me choose an amazing dress

I 'may' be having a significant birthday soon. I was hoping to get a dress made but two local dressmakers have proven useless, so might want to buy one instead.

I'm size 14, used to be hourglass but now a bit rounder, busty. I'm very fussy! I want something that feels dressy but could equally well just be worn with ankle boots and a biker jacket to the pub. Would prefer it to have at least short sleeves, and not be polyester. Black or red probably my best colours, or maybe a dark print.

Budget up to about £200 for something really amazing.

Sorry, Countdown but not at all my style, especially the first. It looks like a housecoat that my nana would have worn! Horrible - sorry!

Hmm. Nothing wrong with either of those, but neither are for me. The first is too grown up and sophisticated and the second is too shiny and I don't suit belts, as I'm so short waisted.

Thanks so much for all the links, everyone, but I don't think my perfect dresses exist!

Have you gone back to the dress makers you'd approached. My experience making made to order products is that I get approached by hundreds of people and very few actually translate into orders. My guess is in the run up to Christmas/ny they'll have been super busy and maybe haven't had a chance to reply. A follow up call would just tell them your a serious buyer?

One last try! Not sure about material but it's a bargain, your size I think (sorry if not) and i like it...

Late to the party (but love dress shopping)

Have you tried Bravissimo? I'm hour glass with boobs and their dresses come in different boob sizes! My go to for a good flattering fit.

"I just want a nice dress that isn't poly and doesn't make me look a twat."

And the dress in the OP doesn't? Grin

tigerbear · 03/01/2020 14:33

@nanbread wow, that’s an incredible bargain! Even if the OP doesn’t like it, I’m sure someone will snap that up!

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 03/01/2020 16:38

What's your point, Bluebells?

The Max Mara one is beautiful but would be too long

I like the Kooples one

Another Winser London option from their Gillian Anderson collection, in silk, but over budget and maybe too long?

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2020 15:20

I thought the thread was dead. Grin

That is beautiful, substantially over budget, almost certainly too long. Gorgeous though.

this is a pretty tricky question

RemusLupinsBiggestGroupie · 05/01/2020 18:03

I think it shows how rubbish women's clothes are these days, Sadaz. Finding a nice dress in a decent fabric, with sleeves, for less than £200 really shouldn't be as impossible as it appears to be!

Not sure why the dressmakers didn't work out?
I found for my daughter's wedding that dressmaker was fine ASSUMING they know pretty much what you want - ie similar to the first dress but with some sleeve added. Might be worth going to another with pics of the dress you like?
