Harry and Meghan are visiting Canada House tomorrow ‘...to thank them for the warm Canadian hospitality and support they received during their recent stay in Canada’.

I love that picture of HMQ in lilac. That was at Edward and Sophie's wedding, I think. She looks so happy.

Vaguely Royal Style & Gossip related...

Olivia Colman won the golden globe for her part as HM Queen in The Crown. What are people's thoughts on this?

I don't think she did an especially brilliant portrayal of HMQ. She was alright, but not award winning imo.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 06/01/2020 19:12

I agree, she looks so happy there but I'm surprised if it was at a wedding, I thought she only got that excited about horses! --

superfandango · 06/01/2020 19:13

I liked the series but I did feel a bit like "Well that's Olivia Colman.... In a hat..." which I didn't have with Claire Foy or Matt Smith in the previous two series.

SeaRabbit · 06/01/2020 19:23

I agree re O Colman's performance.

And sadly her dress was a mess. Emilia Wickstead seems to specialise in badly made (that front seam!) unflattering dresses, in too-thick material. Can anyone post a link to anything nice that she's done?

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/01/2020 19:24

@FATEdestiny

Olivia Colman was not great as HM; she was just playing yet another version of Olivia Colman.
Not sure who her competition was, but she didn’t deserve an award imho. ( the young Prince Charles and Princess Anne actors were good).

Good on Zara.
I had no idea she played polo.

Letizia always looks a bit sexy. I think it’s her USP!

Well the H& M visit tomorrow will be a nice way to kick off the imminent new thread.
Any title ideas @QueenOfTheAndals ?

WineOrGinOrBoth · 06/01/2020 19:28

Didn’t rate Olivia Colman as HM. Claire Foy felt like HM IYSWIM.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 06/01/2020 19:29

It was mentioned some months back but the Danish Royal children are
going to school in Verbier

I know it’s Switzerland as opposed to France; but they had a French grandfather; so perhaps they are expanding their French cultural roots.

OC just isn’t as good at being still as CF or even Helen M in The Queen. She has to over-egg it, and so she misses the mark.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 06/01/2020 19:40

Imo, it took Olivia Colman until episode 9 season 3 of The Crown to 'become' HMQ compared to Claire Foy who had nailed it by episode 3, season 1 of The Crown.

I thought Helena B-C 'became' Margaret by episode 4, season 3.

Toby Menzies was Philip straight away. I've just googled Toby & can't believe he's younger than me, I thought he was about 10 years older.
Emerald Fennell was great casting as Camilla & so was Josh O'Connor as Charles.

I really liked the character of Harold Wilson. I wonder if that's true of Wilson being HMQ's second favourite Prime Minister after Churchill. If true I can see why, although politically poles apart from Churchill, Wilson & Churchill both come across as loyal, decent, say it how it is, kind men although they had their faults too.

hopeishere · 06/01/2020 19:55

I agree about Olivia Coleman she really didn't deserved it. Her bumbling - I'm a bit pissed - oh my gosh acceptance speeches are beginning to grate too.

I agree the RF have upped their PR game.

MilleniumHallsWalledGarden · 06/01/2020 20:05

Yes, I think they've drafted in some heavyweight PR bods. It's all good K & W focused stuff at the moment.

QueenOfTheAndals · 06/01/2020 20:06

Lol at "she's so thrifty" when most of those outfits cost several hundreds of pounds!

That's a bit of a weird coat old CPM has in there in Verbier.

queenofarles · 06/01/2020 20:08

Was actually surprised OC won, for most of the series it felt like she was doing a comedy sketch.

Also I must be the only person in the UK who doesn’t get Pheobe WB. Can’t believe she won Confused
