What specs are 'in' (but not too in!)

Just that really! The arm on my specs snapped clean off yesterday and I'm now in a panic to get a new pair. Went in this morning and picked a couple of pairs I liked which were fairly similar to my old ones, which were a bigger style in a thin plastic frame, purple tortoishell. Went back later with my mum (who usually has better taste than me) for a second opinion and she didn't like them at all, and is steering me at some thin gold metal ones, fairly round. Now I'm a 37yo mum of two. I'm not cool by any stretch, but do like to have up to date specs. But I'm concerned whether thin gold metal fairly round ones are too trendy for me. Dh however thinks they're old fashioned. So who is right? Where is the mum fashion line at?

Just popping on to say that izzipizzi glasses are nice and also cheap for those who only need reading glasses.

Elfnsafe1y · 24/12/2019 08:18

I like your mums choice- I think the frames of the others are too strong a colour and don't enhance your hair. / eyebrow colour.
What colour flatters you - ? Blue?

Indecisivelurcher · 24/12/2019 08:35

@comeongordon I know about them, but no stockist around here. Simon Reeve wears them too and obv he's a Dude. Plastic avoidance is another reason I was thinking of trying metal... Perhaps I'll look them up online.

@Indecisivelurcher there wasn’t a stockiest near me either for ages but suddenly one appeared in the last month. I was in a town a bit further from me for an appt last month and tried them on there - the owner said he’s really impressed with the quality and they’re selling like hot cakes. So he didn’t have all the styles for me to try on - he was waiting for the next order. Haven’t had time to go to my local shop with work and Christmas stuff but I’m definitely going to go in the New Year

I've just read all your posts again. Despite your op-name, you actually seem pretty clear about which ones you like best. If the fit isn't right and/or you can't afford them I would try and get a temporary fix on your current ones and then keep looking and start saving. Settling for frames that you're bored with before you even get them is a really bad idea and a waste of money. (Yes I know I sound bossy but I've been there, done that.)

Remember when 'geeky' frames first made a (re-)appearance? Loads of us recoiled because they looked so harsh and well, ugly. But we adjusted and now metallic frames look insipid by comparison. We will adjust again - you're just ahead of the curve.

@floisme thank you, I appreciate your efforts to help a random person with their glasses dilemma 🤓

@comeongordon, any idea what the prices end up like with lenses? I expect they're at the high end!?!

It's the glasses sisterhood lurcher!

Indecisivelurcher · 24/12/2019 08:55

I'm guna leave it until dh can help, always good to have a real life person and think he'll be on my wavelength. Meanwhile the glue seems to be holding (touching wood). If either child or dog whacks them, they'll be straight on the big man's naughty list!!!

In the summer I thought it was time for a change and fancied gold rims again. (Didn't realise they were back in fashion!) Took me 5 mins to fall in love with a pair but then the optician came through and said no way would my prescription fit in the frames without bulky lenses showing from the side. Was gutted. So just beware if buying on-line, this might not be apparent. Everything I tried was apparently wrong size/shape etc. Ended up with a compromise black plastic pair (£500). The plus side is they cover my eyebrows which are unruly to say the least. 😎

ComeOnGordon · 24/12/2019 10:11

@Indecisivelurcher the optician said they were a comparable price range with other glasses in his shop. I think the frames I looked at were about 130€

Indecisivelurcher · 24/12/2019 13:56

So at this point I feel the need to keep everyone updated?! Glasses direct delivery! I have 2 pairs I like. They're plastic rather than the thin metal I think i am ideally looking for but would be fine for a year until I have more cash. They're such a good price, one pair is £20, one is £49. I have another 4 pairs I want to try from glasses direct before making a final decision.

Not blue, I feel those are too big for your face but I'm not a fashion expert

Indecisivelurcher · 24/12/2019 16:52

I'm emergency ordering the brown ones! They can always be spares in the future. Added up to £48 with thinning and postage, if anyone else is interested.

TantricTwist · 25/12/2019 11:31

Glasses direct is out for me as always need them adjusting otherwise I get a headache and the highstreet opticians won't adjust glasses from elsewhere or put their own lenses in other frames. I did try glasses direct once but felt the frames were a bit flimsy tbh.

Nat6999 · 25/12/2019 11:46

I got a pair of top of the range varifocals in Hilfiger frames & a pair of distance in Kylie Minogue frames for £330 before my NHS discount.

I always say the same,I find it really stressful!

ComeOnGordon · 30/12/2019 22:17

Very nice 👍 I finally ordered a new pair today too. Sadly not from sea2see this time - a local optician stocks a small part of the range but they were all way too dark for my pale face. And I don’t want to drive 70km to the next stockiest. So bought some ones very similar to what I have now & ordered them as prescription sunglasses too
