What specs are 'in' (but not too in!)

Just that really! The arm on my specs snapped clean off yesterday and I'm now in a panic to get a new pair. Went in this morning and picked a couple of pairs I liked which were fairly similar to my old ones, which were a bigger style in a thin plastic frame, purple tortoishell. Went back later with my mum (who usually has better taste than me) for a second opinion and she didn't like them at all, and is steering me at some thin gold metal ones, fairly round. Now I'm a 37yo mum of two. I'm not cool by any stretch, but do like to have up to date specs. But I'm concerned whether thin gold metal fairly round ones are too trendy for me. Dh however thinks they're old fashioned. So who is right? Where is the mum fashion line at?

Get the opinion of someone you trust, or who you think has good taste. I couldn’t vouch for my own taste either. The rule I go by is that if you have a round face/head go for square/ rectangular frames. If you’ve got more of an angular face you’re okay with round frames. Which is a long winded way of saying these ones actually look quite good which kind of blows my rule out of the water.

Have you taken the advice of the optician? they often have someone who specialises in selecting frames. If you don’t like the ones your mum chose then don’t buy them. My husband says he doesn’t care what he wears as he can’t see them when they are on and let me and the optician pick his latest pair.

I really like your kitchen tiles

My prescription lenses (varifocal) are expensive whatever frames I put them in, but I reckon to get two or three years wear whenever I need a change, so I buy the most fashion-forward style that suits me. Specs are the most expensive wearables I own, but I wear them all the time I am awake, so the cost per wear ends up being reasonable, and by the time I need a new prescription, the fashion will move on again so I will try to jump ahead of the fashion curve.

They look lovely!

How about a slight cats eye shape, OP? Nothing too extreme. I think they might suit you.

Ah, x posted, I see you’ve chosen, and very nice they are too!
