What specs are 'in' (but not too in!)

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 16:56

Just that really! The arm on my specs snapped clean off yesterday and I'm now in a panic to get a new pair. Went in this morning and picked a couple of pairs I liked which were fairly similar to my old ones, which were a bigger style in a thin plastic frame, purple tortoishell. Went back later with my mum (who usually has better taste than me) for a second opinion and she didn't like them at all, and is steering me at some thin gold metal ones, fairly round. Now I'm a 37yo mum of two. I'm not cool by any stretch, but do like to have up to date specs. But I'm concerned whether thin gold metal fairly round ones are too trendy for me. Dh however thinks they're old fashioned. So who is right? Where is the mum fashion line at?

I agree the cheap ones and expensive ones look the same shape and size.

I think the cheaper ones suit you more in a classic way.....kind of suit your hair colour, etc. They’d be an easy choice. But actually the more I look at the expensive ones I think the fact they’re a more unusual colour and stand out more make them interesting....

rudolfsquiffy · 23/12/2019 19:44

Too late for this time but this site do nice ones

The expensive ones are so in and stylish. Some of the plastic ones are just so oversized. Try a plastic frame with double metal bar too - soooo trendy now. Metal is mega cool at the moment. Plus the see through platic fronts with gold / silvrr sides. Over sized look silly
The gold metal you tr i ed on with your mum make you look young and current ! ( i work in an opticians )

Aheraldangel · 23/12/2019 20:13

Sorry to hijack your thread, but should glasses cover your eyebrows? I love black rectangular glasses, but have dark quite large eyebrows and the glasses don't cover them, nowhere near them actually!

Fairylea · 23/12/2019 20:16

I prefer the expensive ones. I agree with the poster saying they look more stylish and “in”.

Lampan · 23/12/2019 20:23

Yes @Aheraldangel I agree about the brows, I mentioned it in my post above. The metal frame (the expensive one) could be adjusted to fit lower, the plastic one couldn’t.
FWIW I much much prefer the more expensive metal pair, I help people choose glasses on a daily basis.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 20:27

Yes , I always thought the top of the glasses should come underneath your eyebrows so you can still see the eyebrows above the glasses?

AndNoneForGretchenWieners · 23/12/2019 20:27

I tried on those expensive ones, I ended up going for geek style plastic frames in navy blue and brown because they are similar to my old ones and I can't do change lol. I liked the expensive ones, I just didn't feel like I liked them enough to justify the extra £90.

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 20:28

Can you try on something totally different....I think you’d suit a much more rectangular or maybe oval shape.....so less height to the frame?

SinkGirl · 23/12/2019 20:31

I have these and I love them

First glasses that have ever suited me I think

bigTillyMint · 23/12/2019 20:31

@Indecisivelurcher, the arm on my Specsavers ones broke off (after 6 months) and they mended them for free.

Your current ones are def the best!

Indecisivelurcher · 23/12/2019 20:44

I've ended up with none 🙈 I much prefered the expensive ones but with the lenses they'd be just shy of £300 which gave me palpitations! So I went back to specsavers and put the brown ones on again, but they're pretty boring, I much prefer my current (broken) glasses so it just felt like a backwards step. It's funny how similar they look on photos, they didn't seem it at the time!

I looked the expensive ones up and found them for £141 including lenses online?! From designerglasses.co.uk. In the silver / w grey or a gold / w brown.

I'll see how the ones coming from glasses direct are, but not hopeful as they're not really like the ones I was going for today.

Hopefully the super glue will hold over the festive period!

Omg, I’ve just found the virtual glasses try on feature on specsavers. There goes the rest of the evening!

Indecisivelurcher · 23/12/2019 20:47

By the way I seem actually smile ha ha I just started off with the dour face so thought I'd better stick with it for comparison!

I got these www.specsavers.co.uk/glasses/fcuk-93?sku=25384314

VivaLeBeaver · 23/12/2019 20:51

How about these OP?

Indecisivelurcher · 23/12/2019 21:00

Both those would probably suit me, but they just feel a bit dated to me and I prefer my broken ones still. I would prefer slightly bigger, or rounder, or a lightweight metal frame, for a change. But they don't all suit me, so not easy to just pick and go. I'll probably have a break from it over Christmas and look again in the new year. Bar a miracle from glasses direct.

Indecisivelurcher · 23/12/2019 21:04

They are both nice though. I've just got myself in a bit of a glasses knot!

I need two different strengths, for walking around, driving 3 computer or reading 6. So I buy ready readers for fun and as jewellery I suppose must have 15 or more pairs.

I think all glasses that you posted a bit too big especially too wide, the one greathat suggested or something similar could be really interesting.
Of course, there are trends in glasses but if you wear them 24/7 they need to be comfortable, suit you and your prescription. I was prescribed a new glasses last week and was told straightaway that my current frame won’t be ok for them (too narrow), which is very sad as this frame suits me best shape and color wise.

Plumpuddin · 23/12/2019 21:26

You look lovely in all those glasses.

I wish I could wear glasses but my prescription is so high they shrink my eyes and distort my face size/shape so much they make me look terrible.

Floisme · 23/12/2019 23:28

I think you should trust your instincts and, providing the optician says they fit, go for the expensive ones. You want a change and they look cool and modern. I've let other people talk me out of frames I liked and, although the ones I ended up with were perfectly nice, I always felt vaguely dissatisfied with them.

If the optician advises against them I would slap on some more superglue and keep looking. You're going to wear them every day and it's important to be totally happy with them.

ComeOnGordon · 23/12/2019 23:37

I’m planning to buy my next pair at the beginning of 2020 from a company called Sea2see. They recycle plastic from the ocean into glasses. I tried a few pairs on - they were so light on my face. Just needed a different colour

VivaLeBeaver · 24/12/2019 06:35

I think you have to be careful not to swayed by what’s ‘in’ if they don’t suit you and I do think smaller frames would suit you better.

CottonSock · 24/12/2019 08:01

I have a narrow face and John Lewis were amazing last time. I got a channel pair and a second pair, Oliver people's I think. I won't tell you the price though Blush
