What specs are 'in' (but not too in!)

Just that really! The arm on my specs snapped clean off yesterday and I'm now in a panic to get a new pair. Went in this morning and picked a couple of pairs I liked which were fairly similar to my old ones, which were a bigger style in a thin plastic frame, purple tortoishell. Went back later with my mum (who usually has better taste than me) for a second opinion and she didn't like them at all, and is steering me at some thin gold metal ones, fairly round. Now I'm a 37yo mum of two. I'm not cool by any stretch, but do like to have up to date specs. But I'm concerned whether thin gold metal fairly round ones are too trendy for me. Dh however thinks they're old fashioned. So who is right? Where is the mum fashion line at?

I think you ones work better with your eyebrows

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 20:49

Neither of those 2 suit you as much as your current ones.

I like the ones you chose better.

Fairylea · 21/12/2019 20:50

I agree current ones best of all.

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 20:51

Bugger it, that's what I thought. What a pain they broke!!!!! I could just get the same again, just seems a cop out.

I love the ones your mum said, and you've got lovely teeth.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 20:52

The dark brown ones in your “last ones” post are really nice and suit you.

SpeedofaSloth · 21/12/2019 20:52

I prefer the first pair you chose. I don't think the ones your mum chose are very flattering TBH.

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 20:52

@stripey ha the eyebrows was what I said! Right, back to the drawing board. And hope the glue holds over Christmas I think!

I think the round ones actually suit the shape of your face better, but not keen on the colour of the frame.

Iamanaubergine · 21/12/2019 20:53

Definitely the ones you picked.

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 20:55

I'll get this post deleted in a bit, purely because of the photos.

With a heart shaped to oval face you can wear a wider range of shapes/styles than many people. I agree with your mum actually. The style suits you a bit better and is perhaps more on trend. The frames you have picked and your current ones drown your face a bit. They are all too wide IMO. You shouldn't really see the sides of your head through the lenses. Personally I would try on other round shaped glasses, like the metal ones. My dds are adamant that the round shape is the only way to go.

gotellitonthemountain · 21/12/2019 21:15

Best thing I ever did was use online company. Goggles4u or something similar. Years of paying £250+ for a pair of glasses and now it costs around £40 per pair, lenses included. Means I can have a couple at a time. Good quality, direct delivery, facility of the website to try the frame with your face. Honestly brilliant (and ultrathin lenses - I'm -5)!!

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 21:17

@lostin that's what mum says 🤷🏻‍♀️

I've had 2 pairs of new specs this year, I went to specsavers & chose 2 pairs of largish plastic frames, one from the Kylie Minogue range with sparkly arms & the other pair were Hilfiger ones. Metal frames just don't suit me at all & I'm known for leaving my specs all over, I find the plastic frames more hard wearing & can cope with being sat on occasionally.

VivaLeBeaver · 21/12/2019 21:23

I’ve just been looking at glassesdirect and they won’t do any prescription stronger than -8! So I’m stuffed. Shame.

dudsville · 21/12/2019 21:29

gotellitonthemountain, I'd love to know how you manage. I tried an online specs company but I had to measure where my pupil sat agnes I was afraid this was clearly important and that I'd mess it up.

YouOnlyLiveTwice · 21/12/2019 21:29

I really like the ones in the photo on the left of your images posted at 20:49. Initially I didn’t like the metal tabs at the sides and thought I preferred the ones you posted at 20:48, but flipping between the images, I think the dark mahogany shade and shape of the others (left image @ 20:49) really suit your face & colouring. Sorry if my post is confusing, I’ve had a G&T after dinner!!

gotellitonthemountain · 21/12/2019 21:34

@dudsville - honestly didn't bother with any of that. I have an astigmatism, but I just put my prescription in as per optometrist (I do have to pay for that every two years).
Sorry they don't go up (?down?!) to your prescription, @VivaLeBeaver Xmas Shock

Indecisivelurcher · 21/12/2019 21:40

I have ordered some to try at home from glasses direct. I tried them before, but in case you didn't notice, I'm rather indecisive!!! So 4 pairs at a turn to try didn't work for me!

@Indecisivelurcher Hooray! And good luck ☺️

Janaih · 21/12/2019 21:50

All of the ones you've posted look great! You're lucky youve got a nice heart/oval shaped face and plump lips, you'll suit any style.

millymae · 21/12/2019 22:14

I think it was Fairylea who posted a link to her new Karen Miller glasses
I couldn’t resist having a look and have just spent ages trying on a whole variety of glasses using the spec savers virtual try-on.
I hate buying glasses but the virtual try on is great. I loved Fairylea’s choice but the shape didn’t suit my face at all. I found plenty of others that did though and a few of them I would probably not even have looked at in the shop.
