Thread 1 Thread 2 Thread 3 Thread 4 Thread 5 Thread 6 Thread 7 Thread 8 Thread 9 Thread 10
Thread 11 Thread 12 Thread 13 Thread 14 Thread 15 Thread 16 Thread 17 Thread 18 Thread 19

For those who are taking a peek and wondering what this all about, we mostly discuss a bit of advanced skincare here with a perspective of seeking out the right ingredients (rather than the latest new shiny product and all its empty promises) for our particular skin needs. Distinguishing the acid toners from the actives whilst avoiding the truly unimpressive and harmful ingredients with a hope to achieve a bit of anti-ageing, alleviate irritation and sensitivities with some idle chat in between. Newcomers are always welcome but please note the following:

Questions and asking for help on this thread is encouraged, however, we can’t give you a specific routine to follow and hope it works out for the best. There are no overnight miracles in skincare whether it be in the form of products or techniques. It’s about perseverance, understanding your skin, assessing its needs and responding to that in a diligent manner.

These threads were created to help those who want to learn for themselves. We’re a group of interested and invested skincare nuts happy to offer tea and sympathy and dole out advice. Everyone’s journey with skincare is different, what is universal and binds us is that through actually learning about the different active ingredients it helps us get to know our skin and help us adapt as it will change many times throughout our lives - with seasons, hormonal changes, ageing, genetics etc. It's in everyone's best interests to get to know their skin and to keep reviewing those changes with the confidence that comes from the gathered knowledge here. We really encourage you to spend the time reading through previous threads and linked info sheets that the many contributors have taken the trouble to share.

By no means are we experts, we're only a bunch of amateurs that can only respond by suggesting what we would do in your place, for any severe conditions please seek out professional help.

Ahem, and finally a little note on spending. I'm well aware these threads cause many to reach for their wallets and spend with wild abandon. There can sometimes be a bit of a frenzy surrounding the excitement around a newly discovered product or on the back of great improvements when someone reports back. This is all great, it doesn't however, mean everything that's a sudden miracle for one will be it for you. Usually, it's a light bulb moment for connecting the right skincare ingredient with an individual experiencing a specific problem. Take your time to mull over decisions and question whether it's right for you too. Skincare is highly individual, it's a slow game that should cost mostly in patience, input, education, and perseverance. Please don't make it cost you financially needlessly.

I am very slowly working on consolidating the gathered information from previous threads into easier to read formats but it’s slow going. I would suggest reading thread 1 and at the very least the following info sheets (provided they apply to you):

Where to Start

Basics of an Actives Routine

Skin Types vs. Skin Conditions Info Sheet

Anti-Ageing Info sheet

Adult Acne Info Sheet

Er Blush yes I have it. I don't love it, it's very much "is this actually doing much?" On my hair
You need a tiny amount or it's way too heavy but my hair isn't a massive cream fan
I haven't tried it with the marmalade so that can be an experiment next wash day!
I find oddly that using a bit of water based lube Grin really does help with my frizz. Have you looked at curl keeper? Their gel is nice, I haven't tried the original stuff though which is meant to be similar to using er, lube Grin

botemp · 18/04/2020 14:25

Right I'll be back with my full list...

But as I understand tiny bit of bounce curl and then saturate the hell out of it with ecoslay. Let me know how it works out, please Halo

Curl keeper doesn't seem to have samples so I'll stick it on a last resort list. I think my issue is that my hair is for the most part finer density and then there's a bunch of wayward thicker ones that are coily and kinky and they just don't feel like playing along. I call that frizz but that's probably not what frizz is? I'm somehow convinced a heated deep conditioning cap may be the answer to this, but that's probably delusional.

Botemp... thank you for your advice, I wear minimal makeup up as a rule, foundation and lipstick really, I have my lashes tinted and curled so don't have to wear mascara! At the moment I'm not wearing any as no one sees me!

I think I have a combination skin? My t zone can be oily but not anywhere else. I have stopped as of today washing my face in the shower with soap and will look at cleansers now and keep on reading here...

I do drink a lot of tea and coffee and is it right caffeine isn't good for skin?

Thank you for the help I'm off to do more reading...

Monstermissy36 · 18/04/2020 14:29

Oh and got myself on the Dermatica waiting list 👍

botemp · 18/04/2020 14:42

Missy, caffeine is a tough one, it's much easier to definitively say if there's sugar or sugar substitutes in with your cuppa, that that is far worse for skin health/premature ageing. In moderation caffeine tends to be okay and potentially beneficial. Under 4 cups of coffee or something to that effect, loads of it and it just affects overall health and that tends to show in skin, leads to poor sleep which again will show in skin and so on.

Foundation still needs to come off separately or really up the amount of cleanser you use and how long for, but since you're not wearing any now leave it for later, but in the future possibly consider an oil cleanser.

What was your opinion on the Curel INCI Bo? Has it put you off?

botemp · 18/04/2020 18:32

Not at all Pupsie, although I only looked at the preservatives, I don't have an issue with parabens but a lot of consumers do (wrongly informed) so most companies replace them with something less effective, so I was surprised to see they stuck with the original Japanese formulation. Hada Labo changed theirs so I assumed they'd follow suit, but then again they have some EU banned ingredients in theirs like MI as well.

Can't get Curel here though, so will have to wait until they decide to launch it here or order from Japan/pick it up if I'm ever in the UK.

Scrolled back and looked properly now, I like that it has a good variation of gentle humectants and licorice root extract, so underrated here but I'm pegging it as the next Niacinamide. Minor thing, it contains isopropyl alcohol, so straight alcohol not a fatty one, which is generally not considered great for skin but it's so little I'm assuming it was a solvent for another ingredient and other companies wouldn't bother disclosing that.

cinammonbuns · 18/04/2020 20:06

@botemp yes I’ve used it it’s very good and it’s comfortable enough to wear on face and body. It has slight sheen I would say it is similar to the biore watery essence but doesn’t smell as strongly of alcohol.

Pupsiecola · 19/04/2020 00:18

It's certainly making my skin feel very comfortable and that's probably always been my number one priority.

I have just joined the Dermatica waitlist for a consult.

Jedstre · 19/04/2020 14:04

I’ve also joined dermatica wait list. There’ll be no Europe trips for DH for a while so no chance of stocking up on ‘retrirides’ (tretinoin).

I’ve ordered the hourglass palette so fingers crossed I like it.

Outtheforest · 19/04/2020 15:17

Had a look in the pharmacy today for cereva and no luck. They pointed me to a brand called certaphil but I didn't want to spend ages reading/googling ingredients in the shop. Will look into it tonight, anybody heard of it?

botemp · 19/04/2020 18:09

Thanks cinnamon, I've just noticed it's only PA+++, not the usual four, so now I'm on the fence. Makes for a good indoor sunscreen but probably makes it less suitable for the summer ahead.

What do you want to get out of dermatica Pupsie, for anti ageing and acne they're helpful but their offering for rosacea is somewhat limited.

Out, Cetaphil is a bit like Cerave but I think a bit simpler, just very basic, considered quite drying by some. I'm not sure if they have a BHA cleanser. Neutrogena has one, do they sell that by any chance?

OP posts:
Outtheforest · 19/04/2020 20:53

bo looking at their website cetaphil is much more focused on gentle products so no BHA. I can definitely get neutrogena, theirs always a shelf of it will have a look next weekend it the BHA wash is there.
I've realised I have a basically unused bottle of LRP toner than contains BHA, it didn't stand up to PC for my face but may give it a go on my back/chest/shoulders. If it completely backfires I'll just gave to wear sleeves for a while Blush

botemp · 19/04/2020 21:05

Is it the effaclair range? Maybe you can put some in a spray bottle to make it easier to apply and pat it in a bit after.

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 19/04/2020 22:22

Bo, I'm interested in anti-ageing. I don't need anything for rosacea. I'm not even convinced I have it tbh.

ClientQ · 19/04/2020 22:56

Hair wash day tomorrow - I have my bounce curl cream and eco slay ready!

botemp · 20/04/2020 11:45

Have you washed your hair yet Client?

Got it Pupsie, I thought you always struggled to get on with stronger retinols so didn't think you'd be pursuing the prescription stuff.

OP posts:
Pupsiecola · 20/04/2020 12:11

I've been building up Bo over the last few years. I can now tolerate Neostrata where 2 years ago I couldn't. So I just figured I'll give it a go. Start off twice a week, maybe buffer. See how it goes.

ClientQ · 20/04/2020 13:31

I have but it takes AGES to dry and I don't scrunch out the cast until the next day so it's a bit of a long haul!

Outtheforest · 20/04/2020 14:41

bo yes it's the effaclar astringent toner, bought it while waiting for my second bottle of PC to arrive. My face got on fine with it but it didn't do an awful lot. Worth a try on my back as its only going to waste. Good idea about the spray bottle.
client I had a look and saw they had the 10 in 1 mask but it was expensive, working out at around £22. Not sure I want to spend that much on a hair mask unless it's going to leave me with princess locks. Will maybe give it a try when I'm allowed back to the office and can no longer rock the frizz daily Blush

ClientQ · 20/04/2020 19:25

Need to scrunch out the cast yet Smile

I’m really enjoying this new found skincare routine business. Today is the 3rd time of applying my Timeless Vit C and so far so good. I’m worried it may clog my pores though?

Really need to try and get back on the healthy eating bandwagon too. Shocked and repulsed to find that my loungewear with elasticated waist felt VERY snug today. As well as focusing on skincare in lockdown, that was the brutal blow I needed to realise I need to focus on healthier eating too Blush I’ve quite easily put half a stone on since lockdown started.

Question re - SPF. Do you still wear it if you’ll be indoors all day? I never used to but noticed just how much sun comes through our windows today, particularly as I’m constantly stood by the sink lately, washing up Hmm

Tsmummy08 · 20/04/2020 20:56

@Jedstre Re. Hourglass Ambient, I use it as a finishing powder, swirling a big brush over the three pans and tapping off any excess. It gives a gorgeous, glowy, blurring effect that's unlike other finishing powders... I'm on my second one! I know there are some other fans on here....

ClientQ · 20/04/2020 21:04

I use the hourglass ethereal (because I'm mega pale!) and it's lovely. I have the ethereal blush too
