I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

Genetics definitely. But things can make you look older - stress I think.

I always used to look much younger than I was but then after several years of stress and bereavements I look at least 100 now! I definitely look and feel much older than my age.

Doubleraspberry · 24/11/2019 15:08

I’m fat. My skin looks plump!

Fakeflowersaremynewnormal · 24/11/2019 15:09

I tell everyone I am 5 years older than my true age.

Floisme · 24/11/2019 15:09

I assume they're lying.

tabulahrasa · 24/11/2019 15:09

Have children very young... people always assume you’re about a decade older and just look younger...

PurpleDaisies · 24/11/2019 15:09

Genes.
But my skin looks it’s best when I’m doing loads of properly sweaty exercise and eating well. Changing skincare made a difference too.

Ohyesiam · 24/11/2019 15:10

Face yoga! It’s the secret I only ever tell on MumsnetGrin. Bloody works though.

Justgivemesomepeace · 24/11/2019 15:11

My dads genetics. I have no skin care routine. I just wash my make up off with baby wipes, usually in the morning Blush .
My diet is no where near as good as it should be, i know i dont drink enough water and too much coffee and i dont do much exercise anymore after i packed in netball when my knees gave up.
Definately genetics in my case. My dad has barely a wrinkle at 77. He got mistaken for my mums son, rather thsn her husband when she was in hospital.

onioncrumble · 24/11/2019 15:11

Botox, fillers, upper and lower eye lift all done by a world class surgeon rather than a beautician on the high street

Northumberlandlass · 24/11/2019 15:13

I have a plump face & a fringe (poor woman’s botox)

TiceCream · 24/11/2019 15:13

Sunscreen. Hat. Avoid the sun. No smoking. And don’t have kids. I always looked young but have visibly aged since becoming a mum.

Fidgety31 · 24/11/2019 15:13

I have always been told I look younger - I’m 43 now. I have no idea if I look my age or not - it’s just what other people often say . I’ve often been mistaken for my oldest sons girlfriend- he hates it !

I don’t have a skincare regime - take my make up off with a wipe at night and that’s it.
I don’t use any creams or lotions etc .
I think the reason I may look younger is that I have oily skin so I think it stops so many wrinkles coming . Probably genetics too.
I drink too much alcohol but don’t smoke anymore . I don’t sleep well and have a very stressful life with challenging kids and a shit boyfriend and work full time .
So I can honestly say it’s nothing to do with my life style or products.
Maybe one day I will look older .

Missillusioned · 24/11/2019 15:14

Sunscreen definitely helps. But IRL no one really looks more than 5 years younger than their age, no matter what they say on here.

I find that people who are much younger or older than the person who's age they're guessing will sometimes get it wrong, but people around the same age will usually get it right to within a couple of years.

For example a teenager or a pensioner may guess a 40 yr old as being 35 or 45, but another 40 yr old will guess it correctly. The exception is if the person is if a different race. Black skin ages well and a person who doesn't mix with different ethnicities often, may underestimate a black persons age.

Genetics and keeping your weight in a healthy corridor. Weight, either under or over, can be very ageing indeed. A fit toned body is perceived as more youthful than an under or over weight one.

In addition good hair cut/colour and often some light, enhancing make up on the cosmetic front.

Mijnje · 24/11/2019 15:18

I've always been told this & assumed it's a mixture of:
Not smoking
Low stress attitude to life
Being vegetarian since childhood
Having a tan (yes tanning has risks but it is an easy way to look younger and more attractive)

goose1964 · 24/11/2019 15:21

Genetics Andrew note spending time in the sun. Stress can age you,my sister aged rapidly after her husband died. She's remarried and happy and looks younger than she did despite bring ten years older.

Boohooyouho · 24/11/2019 15:22

Another one whose fat plumps put the wrinkles here. Although my grandmother didn’t have any wrinkles until she had radiotherapy in her 70s so I guess I have pretty good genes as well

PlasticPatty · 24/11/2019 15:23

No make-up, no smoking, no drinking, never did any sunbathing.
Never thinking of how old I am, unless the aches and pains give me away.
And fat. Lots of fat.

PizzaExpressWoking · 24/11/2019 15:23

Sunblock ever since I was a teenager.

Having a plumpish "babyface" (hated it when I was younger, but now it's useful).

Hair dye. With my natural grey hair I would probably look at least 10 years older than I do now.

BikeRunSki · 24/11/2019 15:24

Genes, sunscreen, have never smoked

joystir59 · 24/11/2019 15:26

Keeping in touch with your inner child, living in the moment, not having to deal with too much stress and worry, not drinking, smoking or using drugs. Eating a healthy fiet

BarkandCheese · 24/11/2019 15:28

Genetics, both my parents look younger than they are so I got a double dose, never being a smoker and never being a sun worshiper.

I’ve always looked after my skin but only ever used basic products, I find anti ageing stuff irritating. I’ve got quite oily skin which seems to help too.

Fuzzywuzzyface · 24/11/2019 15:28

Being about 3 stone overweight.. I am 50 but look younger.. have a crap body but my face looks fab Wink Grin

feelingsinister · 24/11/2019 15:30

I'm fat.

My skincare routine is good.
I do sunbathe but always use 30f.
I've smoked on and off for 25 years.

I'm regularly told I look 10-15 years younger that I do.

PinkPanthaa · 24/11/2019 15:30

I'm in my 40s and still regularly asked for ID when buying wine in the supermarket. I am short, dress in trainers and jeans and still have acne and greasy hair so I look like a teenager at first glance. I hate it.
