I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

I regularly got comments that I looked much younger than my age
Then in my fiftieth year I had the worst year I can recall as an adult. So so much worry and stress over DD1.
No one says it now! I was shocked what a toll it took facially

velocitygirl7 · 24/11/2019 18:00

I think it's how you dress, staying slim, your hair etc
I don't think facially I look any younger than my friends but I'm slim and have the hair & clothes of someone considerably younger.
I know if I dressed differently and had an 'older' haircut I would definitely look my age!!

RuthW · 24/11/2019 18:03

Genetics, no alcohol, no smoking and keeping out of the sun at all times. Sunscreen everyday. I'm also overweight.

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 18:03

No wrinkles on a balloon ... I have a round face Grin

JoannaObrien · 24/11/2019 18:05

@RuthW

I disagree I do like my wine at weekends and I am drinking a Pinot Blush at the moment.... everything in moderation.

OhTheRoses · 24/11/2019 18:07

It's genetics. I drink and tan without much thought to sunscreen (olive skin though).
It's also about having a glass half full mentality.
Oh, and at nearly 60 although I am not very grey, the help my hair has helps. A lot.
Good teeth.
Best my face gets is No7 3 in one wipes and soap and water.

Having dc in their early 20s helps me know what's funky.

I am sure it is just genetics, I am overweight, drink regularly (2-3 glasses of wine most nights), no exercise, still get told I look younger than I am .... as does my DM, late 80s, often assumed to be in her mid 70s. Also luck if you are in good health (despite being overweight etc) you presumably have a more positive approach to life which must help.

violetbunny · 24/11/2019 18:15

Don't smoke or drink
Don't have kids
Sunscreen every single day

happinessischocolate · 24/11/2019 18:17

I'm 55 and am frequently met with surprise when I tell people my age, most people assume early 49s, 2 guys at work were talking to a colleague and they apparently thought I'm in my 30s Grin

I think it's partly down to good genetics and partly down to natural make up, long blond hair and always wearing jeans and T-shirts. I look younger because of my clothing but then my face doesn't shock you too much when you get up close Wink

happinessischocolate · 24/11/2019 18:18

40s not 49s GrinGrin

sofato5miles · 24/11/2019 18:21

My hair is bit Stevie Nick's and I dress fashionably. I also laugh, a lot. Had to get my drivers licence out the other day as a drink mid 20s guy thought I was mid 30s and I am most definitely not ( it was dark though 🤣)

Laska2Meryls · 24/11/2019 18:21

Genetics,

I used to smoke , I drink wine regularly and my only real exercise is walking (although I do a lot of this ) a bit of cycling - not fast or up big hills !- and gardening..

However I have never (apart from the odd bit of mascara very occasionally ) worn make up/, and i have never used soap or cleansers on my face .. water (often cold !) and flannel only .. but then I dont use moisturiser either except perhaps sometime mid winter.. nor sunscreen on my face except on holiday

My DM who was 93 when she died had dark brown hair until the end.. everyone thought she dyed it , but no.. Sadly I take after my father and have gone nearly al grey at 62( but I colour it pink)

ILikeyourHairyHands · 24/11/2019 18:24

I really do think most people look their age, they may look 'good' or 'bad' for it, but for the huge majority of people it's very easy to guess how old they are.

Tales of being I'D for booze are very common, I was I'D for booze at 39, it wasn't that I looked 17, it's the fact that the girl on the checkout was 18, was told to ID anyone who looked under 25, and when you're 18 it's quite hard to determine between 25 and late 30s, both look considerably older to them.

And hair dye and botox fool no-one, you may look fresher, but you don't look 25, and why would you want to?

I'm 45, I have long silver hair, great skin, yes, I think I look beautiful, but no-one's mistaking me for a 25 or even 35-year-old. I'm happy to be 45, I feel really powerful and the most attractive I've ever felt. I own the space around me, walk tall and purposefully.

I don't want to be perceived as younger. I've earned every inch of myself, and I fucking love it.

LilyJade · 24/11/2019 18:34

I'm 43 & look younger, it's 2 things - genetics (everyone in my family looks youthful) & wearing a moisturiser containing spf 15 at least since I was a teen.

Also not smoking or using sunbeds has probably helped.

Vicliz24 · 24/11/2019 18:40

I'm 55 with lovely silver hair that I've never ever regretted. I keep myself fit and active I wear funky clothes ( not eccentric but actually trendy) nobody in my life wanted me to go grey but it has brightened my face considerably. I smoked until I was 42 and love the sun . I have olive skin which I think helps . The one single thing I have is a positive attitude and outlook. That I find to be the one thing that keeps me looking good for my age . I am 55 and have no dreams of looking 35

IcedPurple · 24/11/2019 18:44

I'd agree that the majority of people do look within about 5 years +/- their age. However, there are people who really do look significantly younger or older than they are. Not that many of them, but they do exist.

mollymandyandypandy · 24/11/2019 18:49

People are often surprised how old I am, and no I don't do the 'guess my age', I 'm talking when you are filling stuff in etc. A couple of years ago whilst on holiday in France I had to go to the doctors, he expressed surprise at my age Grin.

With me it is absolutely just genetics although I have always drunk a lot of water, exercised and followed some type of beauty regime but not with expensive products. I am a sun and wine lover and have spent quite a lot of time in hot countries. The thing I notice with my friends is that those who have smoked have really paid the price with their skin despite giving up.

Clearnightsky · 24/11/2019 18:50

I do agree with some posters, whilst it’s nice to look younger, we ARE all getting older and it’s not good for our mental health to feel that we only get a positive response from the world if we look young.

It’s particularly so for us women still. Sadly but very true.

However that outlook is key. If we are passionately sharing our work or our interests or even giving our sage wise opinion, I think we shine. Our brains are full of the experience and joy of years of life and I do think it gives our faces and demeanor gravitas and depth. And if we are still open and curious, youthful vitality too.

I look at young people’s faces and am amazed by how pretty they all are, youth is just pretty pleasant to look at it. However even then, some young people’s faces are not pleasant as they just eminate aggression or sullenness or whatever.

So I guess I’m saying it what we project makes up a huge part of our physical presence. Let’s hold onto that!

666onmyhead · 24/11/2019 18:50

Eh - all down to my fantastic plastic surgeon 😆

OhTheRoses · 24/11/2019 18:53

Hmm.
I have a picture of mother and mil in profile together at ds's christening. More than 24 years ago.

Mother had highlights, MIL was iron grey. Mother had well cared for teeth, MIL's needed work.
Mother wore a satin royal blue blouse, MIL was beige.
Both born in 1936; mother looked 15 years younger. They have evened up a bit, but mother still looks better. Still a good haircut, good make-up and on-trend clothes.

Fidgety31 · 24/11/2019 18:53

I think having a fringe makes women look older, not younger .

OhTheRoses · 24/11/2019 18:54

Oh and the other difference - mother was and is a party girl. MIL is a killjoy.

happinessischocolate · 24/11/2019 18:54

I totally disagree, I'm on tinder, for those who don't know you get a picture and their age, and then you swipe left for nope or right for yes please 😁 the age range I look at is 45 to 65. If I had to put the pictures in age order without the age in them I would not get them right. There's 45 year olds who look older than the 55 year olds and 60 year olds who look younger than some of the 50 year olds

I know this is men rather than women but it will be similar once you get picture after picture,

At work, on one of those team building things we had to put ourselves in age order without speaking and everyone kept trying to put me in the space a good ten years younger than I am.

IcedPurple · 24/11/2019 18:58

Isn't Tinder notorious for people putting inaccurate pictures of themselves online?

Ugh. How embarrassing for anyone over the age of 10 or so! I think I'd refuse if asked - 'team building'? I don't think so!
