I think it is largely genetics .. do things like sun screen, water, diet, yoga etc really help?

HRT and not smoking or drinking alcohol. On HRT I look much younger than menopausale colleagues not on it. People comment on it.

oohnicevase · 24/11/2019 16:09

I get this ALOT, I'm short with blonde curly hair and I have an hourglass figure .. I don't think it's my face per se but a package . I am also young at heart and love to laugh.. I'm 45 and mostly people think I'm 30 . I've recently started a new job and a young lad (19) there is quite flirty , I politely asked him to stop because I was worried about getting into trouble etc and when I told him my age he was shocked . I can't see it myself but I'm used to my face I guess 🤷‍♀️

Moominfan · 24/11/2019 16:10

Black
Neck lots of water
Don't drink
Don't smoke
Carry extra weight to fill out wrinkles

lanbro · 24/11/2019 16:11

Genetics definitely, my dm has always looked younger than she is and recently people have been horrified I'm almost 40! No skincare regime, drink a lot of wine and coffee, smoke...just lucky I guess!

dottiedodah · 24/11/2019 16:13

I have been told I look younger than I am .I have a slightly plump face and colour my hair with a well known blonde colour that covers all grey! I am also quite small ,I dont know if that helps at all?

Sammi38 · 24/11/2019 16:14

Genetics, definitely, I have an unhealthy lifestyle, but still look younger than my age.

saltysally · 24/11/2019 16:14

Fat helps
Look how anyone famous ages when why lose loads of weight

Highandlow · 24/11/2019 16:17

Minimal extreme sun exposure (I.e burning / sunny holidays)
Eating well/ keeping weight down. I had a very good diet as a child and did lots of exercise, I think it set me up well.
Walking
Always wash make up off
Probably act younger than I am aswell
Being small - people think I am small and young

CamVegOut · 24/11/2019 16:17

Genetics, not drinking tea or coffee or eating meat for over 30 years.

Moonba · 24/11/2019 16:18

Genetics
Lost weight
Don’t drink, never smoked
Keep hydrated
Laugh lots and don’t take life too seriously.

I also am a believer that clothes and hair can add / take away years

cannonball8726 · 24/11/2019 16:19

Being short!

notnowmaybelater · 24/11/2019 16:19

People who get told this regularly fish for compliments.

There's no earthly reason to tell anyone how old they look unless they try to make you guess, then if cornered etiquette dictates that you guess in your head and then knock at least 10 years off because the rather toxic culture of youth dictates that guessing correctly, or god forbid older, is a terrible insult.

Often you can actually work someone's age out because you know when they left school/ university/ when they qualified or actually know their age for some reason, but you still have to pretend to guess ten years younger, because it's a weird mind game some people play.

I've never in my life told anyone how old I think they look unless cornered by these odd people who demand every aquaintance guess their age at some point in the first few months of knowing one another... Otherwise it doesn't cross my mind to think about whether people look the age they are...

WifOfBif · 24/11/2019 16:21

Botox!

VanCleefArpels · 24/11/2019 16:22

Not smoking. Not sunbathing much (and use spf when I do), post 40 realising it’s arse or face, and plumping (as it were) for arse, great skincare regime and loads of well applied makeup. I’m 50 but have been mistaken for a 30 something

VanCleefArpels · 24/11/2019 16:24

notnow when I have said I’ve got grown up children is when people often say you can’t possibky be old enough....not fishing at all, and never do I hide my actual age

DrCoconut · 24/11/2019 16:25

No idea. People always say I don't look my age. I got ID'd for buying a bottle of whisky in Morrisons and I'm 42. I think I look it and then some, especially over the last two high stress years. I don't do anything special. I don't smoke or drink much alcohol if that's relevant?

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 16:27

I would agree, you always aim much lower than you think the person is when guessing age, it's just polite. For some reason getting it right, or guessing older is never met with much pleasure.

I seldom mention my age, but when it was my 50th last year, there was a few times I said oh I'm doing x for my 50th and I got surprise back, the kind of open mouth "are you really" thing, weirdly mostly from men. Where as when I'm complimented on how I look, ie you're pretty, it's 99 times out of a hundred it's a woman who does it.

SpongeBobJudgeyPants · 24/11/2019 16:29

Not drinking. Being a bit of a chubster. Caci facials and a reasonable skin care routine.

JenniferM1989 · 24/11/2019 16:30

I think carrying some weight makes most people look younger

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 16:30

I would also add that the hair dye thing I agree with too,

A friend of mine, mid fifties had let her hair go grey, and she recently dyed it back to her natural brunette and it literally took years off her.

In addition the dressing well thing i also agree with. Not donning some middle aged uniform, but well fitting clothes, well cut, in current flattering styles and colours.

Clearnightsky · 24/11/2019 16:30

Genetics largely. My father looks about 50 even though he’s 75 and he’s not even healthy.

Stress. I’m stressed at the moment and I look older.

When I’m happy I look younger.

I’m going to try face yoga!

CaptainMyCaptain · 24/11/2019 16:31

Sunscreen. Don't smoke.

notnowmaybelater · 24/11/2019 16:32

VanCleefArpels how old were you when you had your children? If you had your first at 35 I take your point, but if you had them young they may not mean quite what you're inferring.

I'm old enough to be a grandmother but if someone my age was a grandmother I might blurt out that they didn't seem old enough, because my youngest child is 8 and I'm also technically just about young enough to get pregnant still...

A friend of mine is actually the grandma of my dc3's friend - we met in the local playground with the children when they were toddlers and I thought she was his mum, not because she looked younger than the 42 she then was, but because I was 37 and 5 years older than me wasn't grandmother age in my head! She'd had her DD at 20 and her DD had had her DS at 19. Nothing at all wrong with that but people unthinkingly assume similar life paths on first aquaintance.

Bluntness100 · 24/11/2019 16:33

I think carrying some weight makes most people look younger

It depends on how much weight. For me, over or under weight is ageing, because people seldom look at just your face, often it's the whole package, Under weight and your face can become drawn and wrinkly, over weight and you can become puffy with double chins etc.

So for me a healthy weight is the least ageing,

tabulahrasa · 24/11/2019 16:34

“People who get told this regularly fish for compliments.“

I wasn’t joking about having children really young and then people assume you’re older but look young.

I look my age, I know I do so I’ve never asked how old people think I am.

But when people meet my children they get confused and you can see them going for, is she someone who had children as a teenager or a lot older than I think she is?

They pretty much always plump for telling MeV how young I look, lol
