Diana was a complicated person you could say a damaged soul.
However she was very loving & kind & she was brilliant at drawing people out of themselves & making them feel special. This was genuine but I also feel that it made her feel better about herself.
Diana was older than me when she died but even back then I felt like she needed 'a strong parenting figure' within her life, someone who could love her unconditionally but also take no nonsense & I think dynamic psychotherapy would have helped her to put her demons to rest, find her 'sense of self' & be content within herself.
Apart from interfering family members on both sides pushing Charles & Diana together, I think they both thought they could help each other & create their own perfect little family, but they had too many of their own demons/anxieties & faults to ever make it work.
Diana would have had a much happier life with a male version of Camilla (as in personality) someone strong, grounded & very caring.

I saw Diana on Richmond Green once circa 1994. She really was luminous. I can still see her now striding along stopping everyone else in their tracks.

It was very affecting, and I can't think of anyone before or since that could have that kind of affect on the public.

BertrandRussell · 30/11/2019 18:43

That charisma thing is extraordinary, isn’t it?
Not al all the same thing, but Richmond Green reminded me- my mum and I saw Omar Sharif there once- and we were both (we were 21 and 55 at the time) mesmerised and never forgot it.

Spudlet · 30/11/2019 19:02

Bill Bryson mentioned seeing her in her car in Windsor once. I think he was out with his small child on a new bike (Christmas) and she gave them such a dazzling smile that he said he wouldn’t hear a word against her, even if she did place 50,000 calls to hunky rugby players (or something like that, I’m quoting from memory and it was a long time ago that I read the book). She definitely had charisma, in bucketloads.

mathanxiety · 30/11/2019 19:48

DuchessofWoke I saw a moth-flame sort of relationship in Clive James' piece, and a very Australian firm handle on reality.

frugalkitty · 30/11/2019 20:07

Oh Bertrand that's made my day, I loved Omar Sharif and Dr Zhivago is my favourite film ever. Sigh.

BertrandRussell · 30/11/2019 20:22

Frugalkitty- he must have been at least 50, and quite ordinary clothes and just walking along as if he was popping to Sainsbury’s. But the glamour! And I wasn’t a particular fan.....

frugalkitty · 30/11/2019 20:29

He was a bit of a chess whizz I believe. It's funny how some people just have that star quality about them.

BertrandRussell · 30/11/2019 20:32

Not so stealth boast here, but I have a child who has it. He’s a performer now, but ever since he was tiny he’s sort of drawn people’s eyes. Even as 3rd Shepherd he was the one everyone looked at just standing still not saying anything. I wonder what it is. He certainly didn’t get it from me or his dad!

QueenOfTheAndals · 30/11/2019 20:57

I've seen William and Kate in the flesh and he certainly hasn't inherited his mother's star power. They looked fairly ordinary and could've been just about any well-heeled couple on their way home. Which I suppose they were!

I saw PC & Diana after they were married, they did a tour of Wales and I was right at the front of the crowd with a fab view. Luckily she was sat nearest to my side of the road!

She sparkled; looked utterly amazing and it was announced the following day that she was pregnant.

I also saw HM on a Royal walkabout once and she is teeny tiny! 😁

frugalkitty · 30/11/2019 21:10

I've said this before but for me, part of Diana's appeal was her beautiful complexion, she was luminous. I've only ever seen one person in real life with such perfect skin. Jealous, I am Blush

Horsemad · 30/11/2019 21:14

Luminous - she definitely was, frugal 🙂

Disfordarkchocolate · 30/11/2019 21:19

I met a child with this sort of quality too, you just had to look at him. I've never met anyone with the same quality.

GoFiguire · 30/11/2019 22:22

I have this magical star power magnetism. I bought it from B&M.

hopeishere · 30/11/2019 22:38

On W&K's insta their programme with Mary Berry will go out on the 16th December!! Can't wait!!!!

SunsetBoulevard3 · 30/11/2019 23:00

@StartupRepair
Thank you for the link to that article. It was fantastic.
We’ll never see her like again . Or his.

ostritch · 30/11/2019 23:00

Love Mary Berry's pink frock on the insta pic with W&K (I know she isn't Royal but she darn well should be!)

WineOrGinOrBoth · 30/11/2019 23:29

I’ve said before & I’ll say again both C & D married to different people would most likely have been fine. Neither could give the other what they needed as they were both too damaged by their upbringings.

mathanxiety · 01/12/2019 02:03

frugalkitty I thought it was Bridge (and Omar Sharif).

BigGreenOlives · 01/12/2019 02:26

Omar Sharif used to live on the same road as Oliver Reed. Our road backed onto theirs.

Wetdogloveshubert · 01/12/2019 07:52

For those who haven't seen the tweets yet. Mary Berry has a fabulous hairstylist.

Kate's dress is a bespoke version of this Alessandra Rich.

@spudlet I also remember the Bill Bryson passage. I think the crank calling rugby players (or something) line is correct, and he mentions spending £20k a year on leotards, and he ends with “and who amongst us hasn’t, is my unanswerable reply”, which I think is just brilliant.

peridito · 01/12/2019 08:22

A miss for me .Too busy .Hate the dangling neck tie.
