I was just talking about this with friends the other day. When we were in 6th form the mandatory uniform was jeans, jumper and massive pashmina plus shiny flippy hair. I really miss the massive pashmina, it kept me so warm (while my feet froze in shitty cheap ballerina flats worn with no socks all winter). DH had a black manshmina that he loved and wore non-ironically until he left it in a pub.

I have a scarf on today but it will be coming off when I get to work. I may wear a massive pashmina tomorrow for old times sake though.

A couple of years ago I threw away some very thin skinny scarves, those really ARE dated and served no useful purpose anyway.

Besidesthepoint · 29/10/2019 08:54

I dislike them (obv wear if you’re still channelling 2010) because they’re mumsy. Dated

But some of us ARE mumsy and dated. What I find sad is someone who tries too hard to look like the young folk. It starts to look silly around the time that you can't hide your wrinkles and sagging bum anymore.

Is this what the op is referring too?

I (gasp) still wear a pashmina sometimes, not styled in any way, just round my shoulders when I'm cold. Over the top of a wool jacket.
In public places.

Of course older people don't look young. You can't look younger when you are not, even by wearing Converse or avoiding scarves.

I'm hoping those huge fluffy blanket type scarves are in again this year, I haven't got one, but I'm going to!

broomzoom · 29/10/2019 08:58

I'm not a fan of a silk scarf but I don't think one item of clothing can make you look a certain way. Some people just look mumsy, cool, try hard, elegant etc.

isabellerossignol · 29/10/2019 08:58

I am a mum and am happy to look like one. Is there an equivalent pejorative term about dads?

I don't believe there is. What a surprise.

There are few things that seem to wind people up as much as middle aged women who dress to please themselves instead of to look attractive and follow fashion.

Armi · 29/10/2019 09:00

I wear them all the time. But then, I’m never bothered by the vagaries of fashion which is probably why I always look well presented. This, coupled with my charm and charisma, seems to be enough.

broomzoom · 29/10/2019 09:01

Dressing like a dad is very on trend 🤣

2010? How very modern. In my head it's still 1999.

wigglybluelines · 29/10/2019 09:03

a bit ethnic looking Hmm Hmm Hmm

5starshow · 29/10/2019 09:05

Is an indoor scarf something that Margo from The Good Life would wear?
I’m just trying to figure out what an indoor scarf is.

wigglybluelines · 29/10/2019 09:05

I love my "indoor scarves". (Never heard them called that before. I call them.... scarves).

You think they're frumpy? Couldn't give a fuck, still love them.

This x 100.

Someone needs to tell Kate Moss, she's pretty much always in an indoor scarf

You should try working where I work OP it’s bloody freezing

ConFusion360 · 29/10/2019 09:07

I wore a yellow one the other day over a black sweater. Paired with a yellow patterned mini skirt (6" above my knee), black opaques and high black suede heeled boots.

I didn't feel at all frumpy.

theoriginalmadambee · 29/10/2019 09:08

But I need something for my neck, I get a sore throat if someone breaks wind near me Grin.

Out of interest what is the opposite of mumsy? Fashionable, well-maintained, sexy just not anything to do with being a mum? Seems quite derogative.

Before you flame me, I'm forrin Grin.

Bowerbird5 · 29/10/2019 09:09

I were Converse. I have two pairs at the moment. I’m old. You will see lots of teaching staff wearing indoor scarves. It is because you shouldn’t flash your cleavage. V neck tops need an indoor scarf.

Last years Yr 6 told me my Converse were cool and a random person on the station came up behind me one day to say my black printed jeans were “cool” I bet she got a shock when she saw my face and that the ash blonde hair was for real not dyed ash.

I was chuffed considering my much younger sisters took me in hand one year. One gave me the Trini and Suzannah book and the other took me shopping. I mostly wear what I like. So I will continue wearing Keds and Converse thank you. My first pair of Converse were when I was 16 and for basketball. Our team are still playing apparently. Now in the Veteran’s comp.

You're probably right, OP, but a) people should wear what they like and b) blink... and scarves will be back in fashion again.

Bowerbird5 · 29/10/2019 09:10

Wear... sorry late night, not fully awake. Day off.

allezallezallez · 29/10/2019 09:11

Currently wearing an outdoor scarf and blanket as cape at my desk - it’s how you wear it right?

Or should I say teaming scarf with blanket

I might make like trewser though and add the lap blanket

ICanTuckMyBoobsInMyPockets · 29/10/2019 09:12

Why don't you just mind your own business?

SellingHouse · 29/10/2019 09:15

I agree. Don’t like them.

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 29/10/2019 09:18

Never heard of an indoor scarf! However, I do wear a scarf round my neck (and dangling) when I wear a deep v-neck jumper a) to keep my neck warm and b) to hide a large skin tag which is very visible if I don't.
