Exactly. I think she is playing a long game here. She was just dropped in at the deep end.

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2019 08:10

I think she jumped in at the deep end! And why not? I think people forget that she was much older than any other royal consort, with plenty of life experience and confidence and 15 years working life behind her. Why should she hang around with her eyes down and her hands in her lap for 5 years before saying anything?

hopeishere · 21/10/2019 08:28

It's not about hanging round like a wallflower.

In their role if you want to spread a message / do good you need press attention. It's incredibly naive to think that will always be 100% positive / flattering.

Unfortunately the causes they were trying to draw attention to in Africa have now been forgotten in this self indulgent whinge.

They can either work quietly behind the scenes. Or have a "profile" and at the minute it looks like they can't decide what it is they want.

You can only imagine the atmosphere this morning in Buck House is like. Bet the WhatsApp is on fire!!

AppleKatie · 21/10/2019 08:42

Bet the WhatsApp is on fire!

Ha! I’m now speculating about who is in which WhatsApp group and what they might be called.

‘Blood princesses’
‘Over 60s’
‘Direct line’ 🤣

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2019 08:54

“ It's incredibly naive to think that will always be 100% positive / flattering.

She specifically said she didn’t!

banivani · 21/10/2019 09:13

Oops fallen behind a little. I loved the French dress, very clever to have it cover up in church and then be strapless for the party. It was a lot but didn't look like it was eating her. The instagram greeks must have stood out in Paris, home of understated style.

InvisibleWomenMustBeRead · 21/10/2019 09:20

I've not watched the documentary yet but feel gutted reading the comments here and in the papers as it sounds like it has done them more harm than good (as pretty much everyone expected!).

Really wish someone would take Harry in hand and if Charles or the Queen can't (or won't), then someone like Princess Anne or Zara - they seem to have the kind of life H&M want and both are direct descendants of the Queen, so same 'line' as Harry. I don't know, just really wish someone would help them and get Harry some counselling as his mum wasn't innocent in all the media storm either given how she played the game (& again, I'm a huge princess Di fan but I do think Harry is re-writing history to an extent).

This BLOWS. MY. MIND.

No one expects 100% flattering coverage FFS. I work in PR, and I am constantly telling my clients that you don't get to choose what the press say. BUT.... blatant lies and made up shit is entirely different situation.

So... give them a hard time about private planes while preaching climate change, sure. Those are facts. But to make up rubbish about them giving lists to neighbours, print private letters (which you then EDIT before printing too), to attempt underhand ways to get information? Those are all a step further.

BlingLoving · 21/10/2019 09:37

And honestly, sorry to get on some feminist-style/earth mother-type rant here, but as mothers and women surely we should have some sympathy? I could barely drag myself out of bed when DS was born. If my sister made a comment that was even vaguely critical I either cried or got so angry I didn't know how to contain myself. It's bloody hard and emotional, and even more so when there are other things going on.

It's the same with kate - there's so little empathy for her as a mother because she has nannies and help. The assumption is constantly that she probably doesn't really spend time with her kids or isn't a mother in the same way the rest of us are. But of course she is.

Sorry. Rant over. Will go back to the clothes (incidentally - on video, I thought every single one of Meghan's outfits looked better than in the still photos I saw. They all move much better than expected).

I agree @BlingLoving. I think Meghan was probably expecting some negative press. I don't think she was expecting the extent of it and the downright lies, like when the Mail ran an "exposé" on Archie's baby blanket being made in a sweat shop or claimed she made Kate cry at a dress fitting.

This too. I remember a MN thread more or less saying Kate should shut up about postnatal health as she has help. That doesn't mean she can't find it tough being a mother!

Spudlet · 21/10/2019 09:51

I think I might step away from these threads for a bit. If I wanted to read Daily Mail comments section rants suggesting people should fuck off, I’d go direct to their site. I come here to try and get away from that sort of negativity and bile, tbh.

FWIW, while I think H&M have made some missteps, I don’t think they expected or deserve anything like the level of vitriol they’re getting. I hope they can get through it.

banivani · 21/10/2019 09:53

This is what the Guardian article said too, that she expected critical coverage, but that it would be fair.

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2019 09:54

“ I think Meghan was probably expecting some negative press.”
She said specifically in the firm that she was. She said she expected scrutiny, but she expected it to be fair. She said she did not expect things that were not true to be repeated.

BlingLoving · 21/10/2019 09:58

Yup, I remember this. When she so carefully worded a speech - I think at the V&A?

The only reason I got through with DC1 was because I had help. In my case, it wasn't paid help, but without DH, my mother, my best friend and SIL there's no way in hell I would have made it out the other side as intact as I did. And when I spoke with the doctor she was very very clear that I (or rather, my support network) were doing all the right things.

peridito · 21/10/2019 09:58

Not watched the programme .Would love to see some clips of M's dresses in action - does anyone know if that's possible or is watching the whole thing the only option ?

banivani · 21/10/2019 10:00

Bless you Banivani - love these links!

I also really appreciated Lunde's explanation of Swedish Prince/Princess school. What a sensible approach!

Not sure, but if you watch the whole programme I advise muting it.

MotherofPearl · 21/10/2019 11:46

I hear you @Spudlet. I'm stepping away too. I thought the documentary was pretty fair, and FWIW I think Meghan is absolutely entitled to say how she feels - and frankly, who wouldn't feel really ground down and upset by having relentless lies printed about them?

QueenOfTheAndals · 21/10/2019 11:54

@Spudlet and @MotherofPearl please don't step away. I think we've said a lot about last night's documentary on this thread so maybe that discussion could move elsewhere? There are about 3 other threads on it going strong at the moment.

To get back to fashion, I thought these were new photos of Charlene but they're actually a few years old. Worth a look though as they're somewhat zany and the one with Albert looks like a promo shot from a glamorous soap opera!

OP posts:
Horsemad · 21/10/2019 12:02

Wow, they're strange photos!

alliwantisagoodnightssleep · 21/10/2019 12:23

The one with Albert looks like it is a preview for a new episode of Midsomer Murders.

BertrandRussell · 21/10/2019 12:25

Those are very very odd photographs.

Blingandrings · 21/10/2019 12:31

@Lunde I agree with what you say
