I’m also stopping with the shopping now as I’ll have the next few days recovering from the op and I plan to also sort through my wardrobe 👍 the Tux is one of those things I’ve always wanted in my wardrobe but never found one at the right price/quality - and being of small stature some of them look stupid in me. It’s not cheap tbh but the 10% off made it more palatable it certainly looks and hangs more expensive than it is. But that’s it for September!
I’m totally inspired by you len and Ella and I have so many lovely things in my wardrobe that really need to be worn far more often!

I’m not saving anything for “best” anymore 👍

twosoups1972 · 06/09/2019 17:51

That's a good idea @dontcallmelen I love a good sort out although my wardrobe seems a bit overwhelming at the moment!

I've still got a few summer dresses with their tags on, still within refund period, that I can't decide about! They are very nice but I don't think I'll wear them this year what with the weather starting to turn. But I don't really want to return them either!

Ellapaella · 06/09/2019 18:09

Come on Hush sisters, join me in the no spend! I need support.
I have a habit of seeing something I like the look of then convincing myself my life will be so much better if I have it - just that one last thing to complete my wardrobe... and of course it never really is just that one last thing. There's always something else that I want/need. I really am frustrated by myself for doing it. I do actually have quite a lot of will power when I put my mind to it and don't like to lose a challenge so making a pledge is hopefully going to make me stick to it.
I want to try and organise another clothes swap as that went so well and was a great success.
Anyway... if you have a peek at the 'what am I wearing today' thread you will see my picture of the new look 'nightie' dress that I got a while back and haven't worn yet. I'm
Wearing it out tonight ( nowt fancy just a pub tea) but am also thinking of wearing with DM's... your thoughts on other ways to style it would be appreciated my lovelies.
So far I have nink, Len and not on the bench with me... who else is coming?

twosoups1972 · 06/09/2019 18:25

@Ellapaella I am thinking about it! What are the rules - no spend on ANY clothing?

twosoups1972 · 06/09/2019 18:27

I've realised recently when it comes to shopping that as I've having a hard time with dd3 lately, it's become a bit of therapy. It's relaxing to have a browse online which then inevitably leads to buying something. I don't drink so should probably find something else to do to ease the stress.

Ellapaella · 06/09/2019 18:31

@twosoups1972 it's nothing new for September. So you can still buy preloved either from eBay or charity shops.

ilovecherries · 06/09/2019 18:33

I don’t think I’ve spent anything this month (I do have those Hush jackets to decide on but they were bought in August). I won’t be buying anything next week as I will be packing for holiday and focussed on shorts and dresses. Then the next three weeks we’ll be away, that promise I won’t buy anything but we don’t tend to spend a lot of time shopping - though last year I did buy that leather skirt Blush - so it may happen by default.

ilovecherries · 06/09/2019 18:40

My mum has offered me her dressmakers dummy. It was no use to me before as the bust didn’t go nearly big enough, but I am tempted to collect it after our holiday and have a go. Things like the Ivy dress or the wide jersey tops mum assures me I would make for £15-20 quid, and I could put my own v neck in, and a couple of extra inches length.

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 18:41

Yes Ella I’m in (provided we don’t count this weeks Hush purchases Blush) I totally agree with you and having been through quite a difficult time since July I need to stop. It’s just wasteful and like you I’m so easily swayed by pretty fripperies but my reason is environmental even though I never buy from “fast fashion” shops I think I could clothe several small towns with my wardrobe contents and it’s just ridiculous if I’m honest. I totally love S&B and wearing something beautiful and brand new, and I will again but I can manage for a few weeks I’m sure!
Wish we were all geographically closer it would be so much fun to do a clothes swap!

I’ll go have a look at your dress in the other thread.

dontcallmelen · 06/09/2019 18:53

cherries you so should, I bitterly regret that I never took any notice of my Mum when she tried to teach me dressmaking, practically everything I buy has to be altered or sent back due to sometimes little details just not being ‘right’ or the proportions just wrong on me.
Yy I think sometimes shopping has become the national pastime & im as guilty as anyone of this, plus also a spendthrift the amount of stuff that I have charity shopped with labels still on has been truly quite shocking over the last few months, great that charities have benefited but oh my the waste of money is shameful, I think also maybe for me it’s a bit easier not to buy stuff as I’m not working so don’t need work clothes.

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 18:55

Just had a look Ella and you’ve styled it beautifully and agree your DM’s would be great with the dress (like the boots you’re wearing too tbh), not too many other suggestions but may be worth trying with a short cardigan instead of leather jacket which would make the look more “girly” but if you do that deffo wear the DM’s for contrast rather than the boots you have on.

cherries I hope you give dressmaking a go, you’re very talented and if you can manage to do styles such as a wide v neck tops you’d save an absolute fortune as well as having the satisfaction of making it and knowing no one else has anything like it in the world. I grew up in my country having all my clothes made to measure, the weekly ritual of going to the dressmakers with my grandmother or mother, choosing the fabrics/colours - the trimmings!, discussing shall we change the sleeve? Add a dart here, is it the right length...all are such a vivid and wonderful memory for me, going for the fittings and then finally walking away with a perfectly fitting garment. I still miss those days and of course it spoilt me a lot.

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 18:59

Forgot to add Ella you look fabulous in the dress and hope you have fun wearing it this eve 🍷🍻🥂

dontcallmelen · 06/09/2019 19:08

Soy yy my Mum was so talented, she made most of my clothes when I was a child I even had co ordinated PE bags that went with my summer dresses she made.

ilovecherries · 06/09/2019 19:09

Yes, it’s funny, soy, to think that everything I had (in quite a poor family at that time), was made to measure. I longed for a shop bought dress once, when I was about 11, I think. My mum took me to look at it, declared crossly that you ‘could spit peas through it’ and that was the end of my dream of an Etam dress. But all my dresses, shorts, coats, school pinafores, PJs, liberty bodices (!!) etc were hand made, then repurposed or reshaped. Dresses would become skirts with bolero jackets, skirts would become shorts etc. Jumpers would be ripped out, the wool washed, then re-knitted into something else. The only real failure I can remember is the navy swimsuit my mum knitted from two ply wool. And she did that for three of us! I should have paid more attention.

Such lovely memories cherries and len, and actually I think growing up with custom made clothes is one of the reasons we all love style, it never leaves you. Whether it was a talented mother or a seamstress we were given a choice on the final article and I think that develops a sensitivity to fabric and cut and the infinite possibilities of trimmings: the right button or ribbon or detail that sadly most of the younger generation brought up on ready to wear fast fashion will never experience.

ilovecherries · 06/09/2019 19:20

Actually, that was one of the things I loved about the style course I did. There was a lot of emphasis on how to look at a garment and think about how it could be made better by looking at finish and fit rather than about trends.

OP posts:
dontcallmelen · 06/09/2019 19:30

Ohh cherries I have a photo of me somewhere in a hand knitted swimming costume, with it down to my knees due to a wet nappy😂
My Mum was the same I longed for clothes from Etam/Chelsea Girl & she would examine the fabric & finish & declare she could do better in her sleep.
Yy Soy even though I cant make anything, I really appreciate a well finished garment, with attention to detail & as you say those little things like a well placed dart a bound seam etc.

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 19:34

I remember cotton lawn dresses with the hand smock front and big bows at the back! I would have been a very little girl then but oh my I loved those summer dresses. I felt like Alice in Wonderland Grin

dontcallmelen · 06/09/2019 19:38

Aww Soy I had very similar & one that my Mum made for dd, dgd wore when she was a baby. I loved those big bows she also used to make headbands to match.

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 21:09

Yes Len!! I found a pic of a vintage 60’s dress and this is just like mine were with the bow at the back Smile matching headbands sound gorgeous, of course with short white socks and Mary Janes 😍

And did you have “playsuits”? I had lots of these for mucking about: matching girly blouse/shirt and shorts! 😂😂😂

SoyYo · 06/09/2019 21:14

Oh and I wasn’t allowed jeans till my first pair aged 12...my mother deemed them “common” yet denim dungarees in winter we’re allowed Hmm and forced to wear either lace up booties (winter) or Mary Janes till I was 11 years old when finally! I was allowed my first pair of black leather loafers for school.
Damaged for life! Grin

justilou1 · 06/09/2019 22:52

Hi ladies!!! The tux and the dress are both divine, @SoyYo!!! Love a tux!!! So sexy & sophisticated at any age and can be dressed up and down. (Of course I don’t own one anymore. I used to have a white one in the early 90’s, but I never wore backwards it a-la Celine Dion, I promise!)
I love the Schiaparelli Pink pillows idea and am pretty sure DH really won’t. (Too bad.) We have two very expensive linen duvet covers because he “accidentally” collected the wrong one on the way home from work. I ended up storming into the shop and buying the correct one the next day. The dark green is DH’s choice. The brighter one is mine. Now that the sheets have dried, they’re more of a super-bright golden orangey yellow and I quite love them. Pink would still look great. They’re a clash with the duvet covers though. I haven’t ironed a thing. Please excuse dog hair. Ivy dog jumped on me this morning!!!

Ellapaella · 07/09/2019 08:22

@neveradullmoment99 it was Fiebings leather dye that I used.

SoyYo · 07/09/2019 10:52

Morning!
Did you have a good time yesterday eve Ella? Did you end up wearing DM’s with the dress?
justi I like that shade of orange, it’s not neon bright and looks good with the green too.

twosoups1972 · 07/09/2019 11:06

This is such interesting reading, @melen and @cherries your mothers sound so talented and @soy what lovely memories you have of having clothes made.

My own mother was actually the daughter of a very talented tailor. I never met my grandfather, he died when I was very small but he made mens' suits and apparently he customers came from far and wide as he was such an expert.

My mother used to help out in his workshop and developed the skills but she didn't have the time or inclination to make clothes when I was growing up (she was a single parent, my father sadly died when I was very small). However she could recognise a well made garment and good workmanship. This caused a fair few problems when I was growing up....I of course wanted the cheap fashionable clothes, she wanted to dress me in beautifully cut French clothes. We had many a row in Tammy Girl in the early 80s!

I've always let my dds choose their clothes as soon as they were interested and I get how important it is for pre-teens and teens to want to fit in.

@Soy that's the sort of dress I used to dress my dds in when they were small! I loved traditional dresses with smocking, I used to buy them from John Lewis. The dds laugh now when they see photos of themselves, they say they look like they've come straight out of an Enid Blyton book Grin But hey I had to have some fun dressing them when they were small, they soon developed their own style.
