I've lost count of how many threads we've had! Previous thread.

Let's keep the gossip lighthearted and, as always, stick to critiquing the clothes rather than being overly critical about the women wearing them.

And certainly, the thing about Philip of Spain is that he could be king because he was granted co-ruler status. I don't remember the details but god forbid a woman with a husband could be more in control than him in theory! grin.

I always found it quite interesting that although Mary went along with Philip being co ruler and was generally quite keen for him to spend more time in England with her, behind the official words she didn't meekly let him be more in control. She ignored his suggestions on who to appoint to some important positions and he essentially had his own council who advised him and told him what was going on in England, but it was the traditional council (her council really) that did the actual administration of the country. If I remember correctly part of the reason he spends so much time abroad (apart from having so many other territories) was annoyance that the English wouldn't let him do more and wouldn't give him a coronation - because they were afraid a coronation would give him a claim on the throne if Mary died without heirs.

Actually came to see the views on the photos of George but got distracted by the history...

Thanks @SenecaFalls and @BlingLoving - interesting points. I hadn’t realised that Darnley was King Consort, or if I did I’d forgotten. Where does the idea that William of Orange was gay come from - not heard that one either.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/07/2019 19:27

I think he had a lot of "favourites", much like his great-grandfather did. But not sure if he rewarded them as blatantly as James I did.

How was he allowed to rule as her equal if she was the legitimate ruler?

Basically, he was invited to do so as Mary's husband and also as an heir (though after Anne). It was part of the settlement established by Parliament after Mary's father, James II and VII, was deposed (or abdicated as Parliament decided to treat his flight to the continent). James was Catholic and had produced a Catholic heir, which gave impetus to his departure. The "Glorious Revolution" put a final nail in the coffin of the divine right of kings/absolute monarchy notion, and confirmed Parliament as the ruling power.

Paradyning · 22/07/2019 22:33

Wow Seneca you are a guru! Thanks!

And then wouldcall, the children be biologically the monarch’s or would they mix them up.

1000% it would need to be biologically the monarchs. Anything else would surely send the balloon up!

Camilla out and about at the Royal Welsh Show. I'm not sure about the dress - seems to lack shape or structure? It looks better with the Burberry trench over it I think. Still, overall she looks great and she always comes across as very engaging in pictures.

It’s standard Camilla isn’t it? That dress in a million colours/fabrics!

She looks nice though and the coat looks good on her.

QueenOfTheAndals · 22/07/2019 23:05

It's slim pickings for royal style at the moment. The Belgians seem to be out and about a lot but I don't rate Mathilde's clothes that much. They tend towards the matronly and are often quite ill-fitting. CPE looks more promising though she's still very young.

Charlottes handbag on point in that photo @itswinetime Grin

I thought from 2/3+ kids asked a lot of questions.. surely if they told George (re: Trooping) that it was for Granny’s birthday he would have lots of questions eg. why don’t we do this for >insert family members name< birthday. I dunno but surely he would know something is ‘up’ by now: I’d be really interested to know what he knows tbh

AhoyDelBoy · 23/07/2019 02:37

Tbh I think they’d have to introduce the idea in a matter of fact and normalised type of way so it doesn’t come as a big shock when he’s just a bit older. It can’t be long now till he’d have a basic understanding or find out at school, maybe 8-10 years old?

My suggestion would be that if he questioned why re:trooping they just say breezily ‘oh yes, one day we’ll do this for Grandad and then Daddy and then you’ obviously leaving out the part about each of those people needing to die 😬

AhoyDelBoy · 23/07/2019 02:39

Just call me a Royal advisor Grin I’m sure they’ve put a lot of thought into it and are doing a great job
