Hi everyone. My Dads fine luckily. He was in surgery for 6 hours and a bit of a complication happened, but it was eventually resolved. He will be in for a bit longer than anticipated. We got lost trying to find out where he was in the evening and went to 5 different places before we found him in the CCU.
Sotd will be Hermes Pamplemousse Rose.

Hoooo · 28/08/2019 17:32

Great news teta

Well, today has been a fuckfest, hasn't it?

Sotd pp by the fireplace

teta · 28/08/2019 20:12

Yep, it most definitely has.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 28/08/2019 21:02

Hasn't it just? Perfume is doing quite a lot of heavy emotional lifting in my life atm, what with job stress and Brexit hideousness. Plus, after all the GCSE stuff, ds is now clearly feeling a bit overwhelmed by the reality of a new college, new friends and A-levels, and you know what it's like when you see your kids struggling a bit and you can't do much except give them a hug and tell them you love them and you're proud of them...

...hence I wore 4160's Pillow Talk today, so comforting.

MrsM, glad you love Boronia - I thought it might be up your street Grin

teta Flowers pleased to hear your dad is doing ok.

This thread is such a lovely sanctuary from life.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/08/2019 21:34

SOTD MMM Sailing Day. Uneventful.

teta really pleased your dad’s doing okay.

God, the news, the news, the world at large. Is anyone “prepping” for Brexit? I heard from one of the sales ladies in Boots that people are stockpiling paracetamol (?) so picked up a couple of packets while I was there, but other than that I wonder if we should be? We are pretty well stocked, but do a big shop twice a month on average to stay that way, plus bits in between. I have my “apothecary” in the hall with toiletries that would keep me going forever, but stuff like cat food, tins, loo roll?

I don’t want to venture into the prepper or Brexit threads!

Hoooo · 28/08/2019 22:49

maud yep. Could have written your entire post! Ds1 very anxious about induction next week.

And as for the news...well. Not often I'm lost for words, but....

judy I keep telling myself I'm prepping for a bad storm, like the beast from the east, or power cuts...makes it all a bit less scary.

Good advice is to start by prepping for 3 days...so, water, food, hygiene products, meds (esp prescription meds)

Then once thats done think of things like candles, or solar lamps, windup torches etc

HTH x

FloofyCatDoesAwfullyBadThings · 28/08/2019 22:53

The news is equally terrifying and depressing, isn't it? I know exactly what you mean maud about a sanctuary, I think we discussed on thread before about lipstick etc sales going up in recessions? We also have college angst here and I don't know anyone else on my course wails here!

Glad your dad's op went well teta.

Prepping. judy I remember begging for the prepping boards under a non perfume name WinkI've joked before that DH has been prepping for The Zombie Apocalypse (Yes, seriously!) for ages and he would now be smug if it wasn't so shit. My fruit and veg growing has disappeared as I wasn't up to it this year but otherwise we are prepped like a paranoid family in a bunker in Texas Wink Small house and big family so limited but we have extra chest freezer space etc and have lots of frozen veg/fruit as I think these will be £££ as well as usual stuff like bread/milk/chicken/shit beige stuff GrinTins of everything, tuna, mackerel, beans, tomatoes, pulses, rice/pasta etc etc. Also a lot of toiletries like san pro/toilet paper. Batteries. Cat food. Drinks. Chocolate. Baking ingredients. Soap. Laundry powder/tinfoil etc. DH wants to store fuel but I prefer my house not burnt to the ground.

Do come to the Prepper section! Ignore the real crazy Wink

Agree with paracetamol and ibuprofen etc too. My biggest fear is my epilepsy meds, funnily enough my GP has written my last two scripts early so I have a buffer of over a month (this is very unusual). You can't just change brands so this is a real worry for me, especially as I'm uncontrolled anyway atm. Has anyone else experienced meds shortages, I know HRT has been on the news.

I'm usually quite Pollyanna but everything seems to be so...sinister atm. I feel like I've taken my eye off the ball as have been doing a lot of feminist stuff and then the news today is almost surreal and a bit blindsiding.

So the spirit of the thread (and thinking of fruit and veg) I bought Shay and Blue's Blood orange and love it. Orange disappears immediately but afterwards it smells...expensive. Like lovely soft leather gloves (definitely Dents, possibly vintage?)

So that was a very long moan sorry, and I could witter about prepping for ages, at least I shoehorned some perfume in at the end Smile

FloofyCatDoesAwfullyBadThings · 28/08/2019 22:57

Actually we probably all need a laugh, so if you want Extreme Prepping (this is a little embarrassing but hey) DH is always on the lookout for Patient Zero , so we have lots of anti bac hand gel and face masks. Wind up solar radio and foil blankets. A hockey stick for fending off zombies or less prepped folk. Matches and candles.

I also have lots of bleach and hair dye, more importantly Wink

Come the zombie or Brexit apocalypse you are all welcome here! Bring perfume Smile

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 28/08/2019 23:08

Oh, bloody hell, I thought you would say I was being ridiculous! We could definitely do a few weeks easily based on what we have in the house right now, but that’s with just having had a Sainsbury’s delivery. Our cupboards are always well stocked with basics, and we have a big freezer which is generally pretty full. We keep a stock of candles because we have an old-fashioned fuse box, but maybe I need to get on it a bit more.

OP posts:
Hoooo · 29/08/2019 07:44

Think about how you would cook, how you would light your home, things like soap and san pro if needed.

FloofyCatDoesAwfullyBadThings · 29/08/2019 08:45

I didn't mean to alarm you further Grin

In fairness we didn't start prepping specifically for Brexit as such, although the price rises worry me as we have a fixed, relatively small income and DC to feed, so we need to avoid sudden large increases in our bills. If I had more disposable income I probably wouldn't worry so much.

But we also stock up (less worrying than "prepping" Wink) for other reasons - I have had unexpected hospital visits/have been out of action recently so it's good if there are supplies in so the DC and DH don't have to worry about shopping on top of everything else. Also, probably due to childhood, DH likes the security of full cupboards, enough food etc so we have always had this to a certain extent. I also hate uncertainty, I like everything to be planned to the nth degree anyway. I also read a lot of post apocalyptic books Blush

Reading that back it sounds like we have lots of issues and would benefit from some time lying on a couch Grin instead of frightening people on MN about preparing for the apocalypse Wink

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 29/08/2019 09:57

Thanks, this is all useful! floofy I am also a fan of post-apocalyptic fiction - I just view it as fiction! After posting last night I had a good look through the cupboards, and the freezer, and we could quite easily go a few weeks with only buying bread and milk, so those are things that we need to consider. I suppose it's keeping the stocks up though - we tend to do a big fortnightly shop, then replenish.

I have a good stock of stuff like tampons, shower gel, dishwasher tablets etc because I buy when they're on offer. There's enough cat food to feed a shelter, but mainly because madam's so fussy, so we need to stock up a bit more on the food that she actually deems acceptable. She doesn't tend to use the litter trays - goes in the garden unless the weather is truly terrible - but we have a couple of bags of litter in the utility room.

SOTD is Byredo Bibliotheque, and despair.

floofy theres been shortages of some of my most important medication. apparently its manufactering faults but i dont buy that when its happening every single month when i go for a refill. Im really worried im not going to be able to get it which would be disaterous for me as its an anti psychotic and cant just be stopped dead. I have a few days buffer but nothing beyond that so i dont know what will happen if im not able to get it.

SOTD is Contradiction by Calvin Klein. I love the almost sour mettallic note in this, it turns an otherwise standard fruityish floral into something altogether more interesting

Hoooo · 29/08/2019 12:57

Sotd avon little lace dress and despair

MotherOfDragonite · 29/08/2019 15:23

SOTD is Midnight in the Palace Garden and bewilderment.

I think I probably ought to do some sort of freezer clear out and replace the stuff we never eat with things that might actually be useful in the event of (gulp) needing to use them.

MaudBaileysGreenTurban · 29/08/2019 19:58

MrsM - I wore the PP Sahara Noir today, and once I'd got past the rather plasticky topnotes, I really enjoyed it. It lasted well too - it's a winner in my book and might see me finally fold where PP is concerned Grin

I'll try the Scherrer tomorrow; working from home so will be able to devote some time to it!

As for prepping...let's just say quite a lot of teabags arrived from Tesco this evening and I've got an Independent Pharmacy order coming tomorrow... Utter, utter madness.
