Thank you sheep I didn’t know you were a doctor of pine trees. Sounds interesting, is there enough material about pine trees for a doctorate?

noodle the dress is really lovely. Sometimes JL & partners have some great finds.

SoyYo · 12/06/2019 22:55

Got home to a bit of a mess Angry.
Not super dirty but our DC are not the tidiest so a bit Cross with them specially as last Thursday they forgot to follow my instructions for our weekly cleaning lady to let herself in (I knew she’d come in too early for them to let her in) so the house has gone for 10 days with cursory hoovers (by them) but our hard floors have not seen a mop since I left.
Not impressed tbh.
DS2 says DS1 had messy uni mate stay for 6 days, etc etc etc.
I’m a bit fed up tbh as DH and I really would like to go back to Spain mid August and stay away for a month but we don’t feel we can trust them to keep the place looking decent for that long.

We are talking of a 23 and nearly 27 year old here and they said we should give them a chart with “chores” to do while we’re away...I’m annoyed and said are they 10 or in their twenties?
They’ll ask for star charts next!
Boys eh...they were apologetic in the end but really good grief!

Our house in Spain is 15 mins drive from Denia @NotAnActualSheep! Your friend is right so I also recommend @len
Yes there’s daily ferries to Ibiza from there and highly recommend Denia.
It’s chilled, lovely castle and nice shops. As well as great fish restaurants.
Perfect for a day trip.

I’ll tell you more about my trip tomorrow when I’m rested and a bit more chilled (though I’m straight back to work at 8am!)

dontcallmelen · 12/06/2019 23:21

Aww Soy that is sooo annoying, don’t blame you for being cross as you say they are not exactly youngsters, fecking star charts I’d be wrapping em around the head with it so they saw stars, had the same when dd was at home, always came back to a tip.

SoyYo · 12/06/2019 23:23

Sorry for the moan. Should be glad the house is still standing! Grin
And we did have a great time with family and enjoyed the sun!
Tbh it wasn’t really a proper “holiday” as we we're in the middle of sorting out DH residence status in Spain so a lot of toing and froing was done too.

SoyYo · 12/06/2019 23:26

Yeay @len they didn’t ask for star charts 🤣 I said to them you’ll be asking for them next!
It’s okay they do “get it” and I live in hope they’ll look after things better next time...they’re really good people: just very messy!

dontcallmelen · 12/06/2019 23:56

😂mine would have though, ikwym lovely but messy, sure they will be better next time.

ilovecherries · 13/06/2019 00:11

That’s one thing DD has impressed me with the three years we’ve been here and she’s been living in the family home - she really has kept on top of the cleaning and tidying, and makes reasonable efforts with the garden. She didn’t like the idea of a cleaner coming and going, so we cancelled that on the condition she didn’t let it turn into a cess pit, but she’s actually been fine (or at least does a massive clean before we go home, I’m not sure which!). We do try and do a big garden clear up/prune a couple of times a year, but she does at least keep the grass mown (mowed?) and the worst of the weeds at bay. The last time we were home though, we did feel it was starting to need some TLC - decorating, paintwork etc. I guess when you live there, you just do these jobs as an when, and three years of no DIY is starting to show a bit. Still DH will have lots to do in his retirement :)

I’m lying awake fretting about the hospital, and the rain is absolutely thundering against the windows. It’s so miserable.

OP posts:
noodlezoodle · 13/06/2019 02:00

Thanks for letting me off Len Smile

Laska that made me laugh - should have been more specific - am in San Francisco, not Suomi Finland Grin. We're used to a nice foggy cool breeze so we panic a bit when it's roasting.

Cherries I also originally saw the JL dress on Midlifechic, I love her blog. That indigo/navy is my favourite colour. I wasn't sure if it would work on me as I'm 5'10 but it's fine. Good luck for the hospital tomorrow.

Soups, I was v impressed with Lewis's stuff - it's one of the shops I really miss and always visit when I'm in England but I don't remember their own brand stuff always being so good.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 07:01

@ilovecherries Hope you managed to sleep. I'm sure things are still settling down. Goodluck for today but I'm sure you won't need it😁👍

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 07:03

@twosoups1972 was it you that asked about the hush embroidered jacket? I sized down to a 10. Its fine.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 07:04

Here it is when i first got it. Crushed though!

Hushistas drinking gin and planning their holidays
Ellapaella · 13/06/2019 07:37

Such a gorgeous jacket never

Good luck today cherries Thanks

Soyo how frustrating! Little blighters! Still like you say at least the house was still standing 😁 what horrible weather you've had to come home to. This time last year we were all celebrating our summer clothes, I've never bought so many dresses and skirts as I did last year. It was like dressing for holidays at home. I've been in winter clothes the last few days and barely worn anything properly summery at all this year.

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 08:01

Oh it is horrible@Ellapaella. @SoyYo, its so miserable makes you want to run right back! It doesn't help when your children mess things up. My dd's room is a constant battle and my older ds were a nightmare!

neveradullmoment99 · 13/06/2019 08:04

Thanks for the compliment about the jacket @Ellapaella. Sadly not even worn that as the weather has been so rubbish!☹

twosoups1972 · 13/06/2019 08:31

Oh no @SoyYo at least they apologised though. You've shattered my illusions of everything being much easier living with older kids/adult kids! I do worry about my three on the cooking front. Older two can make pasta (and oldest does great soft boiled eggs) but that is it at the moment! I've always been around to do the cooking and although I try and involve them in making stuff they're not interested. My 12 year old dd was very impressed yesterday at a friend's house when her friend.......took something out of the oven!! Grin She thinks her friend is more independent because she's the oldest sibling whilst dd3 is the youngest of 3. But I suppose looking back at myself, even in my late teens I knew very little about cooking and cleaning. I soon learnt when it was necessary.

Anna Murphy was talking about Hush in yesterday's T2 in The Times Smile

@never the jacket is gorgeous! I am tempted but need to check BA's returns policy. I hate paying for return postage. I am also tempted by the Aspiga sandals laska posted to upthread but you have to pay for returns and for shoes that's going to be heavy.

twosoups1972 · 13/06/2019 08:32

@noodlezoodle do you remember John Lewis' own brand Jonelle in the 70s/80s? I seem to remember a lot of sensible knitwear Grin Their stuff is so much better now.

@ilovecherries hope you managed to get some sleep and the hospital goes ok

twosoups1972 · 13/06/2019 08:34

@Ellapaella raining here again today, it is indeed very depressing. Think next week is looking better.

NotAnActualSheep · 13/06/2019 09:20

Oh, the fecking rain. Absolutely torrential last night, and we've got an "Amber" warning here today, like some of you earlier in the week. I'm so not going out til I have to. I do have to take some stuff to the post office, but I'll be washed away if I do that now. Yy ella - I washed winter clothes over Easter ready to put them away for summer, and I'm still breaking into the pile cos it's sooooo cold!

soy how annoying re the messy DC, especially as you gave them instructions on the cleaner... I suppose even her coming round as planned would have sorted the worst of it. I'm not the cleanest of people (in terms of clutter and hoovering/house cleaning... I do wash!)... it just doesn't bother me as long as its not going to make anyone ill (kitchen etc) ... but if I'm staying in someone else's house I make sure things are done to their standards, which are much higher than mine!! Hope your first day of work isn't too painful, and looking forward to hearing about your trip (and purchases! ) when you get a chance.

cherries hope the appointment goes well and you did eventually get some sleep. I did laugh at the rusting boobs though! Oh dear...

never that blue jacket is such a lovely colour. Hope you get to wear it properly soon!

soups BA are annoying for returns, as you do have to pay. I think there is a set fee you can pay and it's just taken off the refund, or you can just pay at the post office (which may be cheaper if you've jusy got a couple of light things to send back). If you send everything back they will refund the original (extortionate) postage, but you still need to pay the return cost. Its a bit cheeky, really.

Lol at the pine trees! Yes, you'd be surprised... it gets very niche and rather geeky. I was looking at their response to roadside pollution (this was aaaaages ago, and hopefully not too outing), and in particular at their response to stress (they don't turn to Wine and Cake like the rest of us!) - so how well trees by the side of the road cope with drought and freezing compared to other trees. I spent far too much time on the hard shoulder of the M6 for comfort, and in some greenhouses with exhaust fumes being pumped into them (so all the recent news about urban air pollution being really bad for you isn't really news... we had to wear masks etc and were limited in how long we should spend, and this was almost 20 years ago). Was v interesting, but I went a bit crazy writing the thesis, so now I do something totally different (and only use my "title" if i want to "pull rank" on someone annoying at work Blush ).

On cooking, despite DPs best efforts I'm sure I didn't learn anything other than really basic stuff, and stuff we'd done in home ec at school, until just before I went to uni... when I panicked a bit. So there's still time!

len I have the same trouble mixing and matching tops and bottoms! I'm a sucker for patterns and details, so I find my "favourite" things don't work together. Dresses are so much easier! Good luck!

noodle yy, JL has some lovely stuff since the rebrand last year. Just plain colours in interesting cuts and good fabrics - not "high fashion" but still feeling a bit modern. Which is what I think they should do, frankly! (well, it's what lots of places should do... M&S, yes, you).

laska I think you may be right on the sale, actually. Its only a couple of weeks til the 25th, and they are still advertising the free delivery code, which they seem to start warning will expire just before the sale. So if it was going to start this coming Tuesday I'd have thought they'd have said something about it by now... Who knows?!

Right... Need to start work...

Laska2Meryls · 13/06/2019 09:33

Flaming June! ( not) ... its the start of the Isle of Wight festival.. cue rain and gales!! we are not going but are planning a get together for saturday.. looks like the bbq is out..

so soy I am going Spanish!! looks yum

Laska2Meryls · 13/06/2019 10:00

laska re Hush sale, that’s quite specific! You made me laugh grin Can just imagine all the Hush staff planning their sale around your holiday!

Two Soups But of course.. Yes it is all about Me ,me, me.. Didnt you realise? Grin

the house has gone for 10 days with cursory hoovers (by them) but our hard floors have not seen a mop since I left... Soy Im afraid my DS (28) wouldn't have even done that.. This is why I never take up his house-sitting offers... I've seen his flat ! .(he has to clean it up for flat inspections every few months) , but somehow I just completely failed in the teaching him to be tidy/clean department. (and he wonders why he cant keep girlfriends for very long) . Oh well at least he washes his clothes....

Laska2Meryls · 13/06/2019 10:09

ella I was thinking just the same and looking at all my summer dresses hanging sadly in the wardrobe.. I put away my long sleeve Ts at the weekend, but today ( at home supposedly working , but our system has been down today so far) . I am wearing Amies , a T under and a cashmere V sweater!! (and am a bit chilly , i need socks on I think !) . so looking forward to Greece..

Not doing research on the M6 does not sound fun! .. Mine was all mostly in a nice warm sound lab....

noodle I have an older version of that JL dress, in pale blue, I love it ( when its hot enough to wear it..)

Lucky you, len going away this week.. enjoy the espadrille shopping

Laska2Meryls · 13/06/2019 10:35

oh and Cherries, Good luck for the boob check up! Hope it goes well and you dont need any more work done.. ..

You may wonder why this thread fills up so fast I am sure a lot of it is me posting short posts then remembering something else!..

I have just booked to see Ute Lemper (shes doing Marlene songs this tour ) again next year.. planning for 2020 already , ( seems a bit sad really) . We have tickets for the Dweezil Zappa tour also .. ( we have weird /wide music tastes)..

I found a £15 off code for Nomads- NLSS19 - so have ordered the top a scarf and the necklace.. Hopefully my Toast things will come today.. I think I may need the jumper!! - I am NOT putting the ruddy heating on again - So glad I am not going to be one of theose camping outat the festival this weekend

dontcallmelen · 13/06/2019 10:52

Ooh Laska she is very good, haul sounds good as well.
Every day a school day, what you wouldn’t know about pine trees.
Yy Jonelle they have definitely upped the game in style stakes.
M&S have got a little better, but they are so rubbish with stock levels everytime they have something really good, it sells out really quickly never to be seen again.
Dd was the nightmare when we went away, funny how now her own house is spotless, Ds is actually very good but I think the army helped a lot in that respect.
Yy the weather, I thinks that’s why my holiday mojo is on the missing list, as not been wearing any summer clothes it’s bloody horrible here again today, thunderstorms forecasted for later.
never jacket is really lovely, I was sorely tempted if it’s in the sale I will succumb I know.
I’m sure with me missing for a week & not talking rubbish the thread won’t fill up nearly as quickly😂
cherries hope the check up went well.

justilou1 · 13/06/2019 11:22

Hi @ilovecherries - This is my second attempt at posting. Silly mumsnet geeks are mucking around with the site, methinks. I hope your checkup went swimmingly and the weather wasn’t too gruesome. Hoping you don’t need a tuneup for your rusty boobages. You’ve been through so much already!!!
Am cooking dinner at the moment (sausages - very gourmet!) and being stalked by a slavering wolf (Ivydog is drooling on my foot - eeeeew!)
Nothing to report from this end, but hoping those who are not going so well feel better! Sending empathy from this end. Am still down in the dumps re-hair and reminding myself it’s not exactly life-threatening so I need to get over myself and start trying hats on.
