Well, Charles is definitely earning his keep now.

Tonight’s venue is a fright and the menu is bleah. I hope Charles kept sending his steak back as it wasn’t bleu

RhubarbIsEvil · 04/06/2019 22:28

Ivanka wore her dresses on the wrong nights. Tonight’s dress would have been perfect last night and the shirt dress would have suited tonight’s slightly less grand affair.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 04/06/2019 22:32

Has the Queen met every American president in her reign? Her life is fascinating.

alldressedupinblue · 04/06/2019 22:35

Can't post the photo, but the lady we saw walking in with Rose is Sarah Vine, the journalist. Married to Michael Gove.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/06/2019 22:35

Whatever it is @Paradyning she's left those plastic see through straps on. (Pic no 8 back view). Perhaps she's planning on returning it. I would.

itswinetime · 04/06/2019 22:37

According to this article the queen has met 12 is presidents and the only one she never met was Lyndon B. Johnson

clicky link

AdaColeman · 04/06/2019 22:38

Never mind Buffalo wings, they should have served jello salad with the steak!

Paradyning · 04/06/2019 22:38

The Queen's met all but 2 presidents spare- LBJ and FDR are missing. She's met 13 in total.

RhubarbIsEvil · 04/06/2019 22:39

Is this the photo? Is that Sarah Vine? Her shoulders are very high.

Article about Rose Hanbury at the State Dinner in the DM

Spudlet · 04/06/2019 22:42

Ivanka is the dangerous Trump, I feel. She's the one who spouts thr ppe guff about being a 'feminist' (while espousing women-hurting policies) and looks 'pretty' (with the help of a shitload of surgery). I read earlier today that Trump is positioning her as a future President Shock. Which is of course why the whole family came, I think - they want to position themselves as a dynasty, the American equivalent to the Royals. What a thought.

itswinetime · 04/06/2019 22:42

Sarah vine isn't she a Dm journalist?? Strange how they have the article isn't it!!

QueenOfTheAndals · 04/06/2019 22:47

She is @itswinetime. She's also married to Michael Gove Confused

That is EXACTLY what I thought when I saw them traipsing around after their father.

Interesting to see Melania drop his handhold earlier. Just how much is she getting to postpone divorcing him, or maybe she really doesn't care and he can do and say whatever he wants which says she is as bad as he is.

alldressedupinblue · 04/06/2019 22:49

@RhubarbIsEvil Yes, that's her in the black dress.

Spudlet · 04/06/2019 22:53

Random interesting aristo time! I fell down a rabbit hole on Wikipedia earlier, and made the acquaintence of this fellow - Charles Howard, the 20th Earl of Suffolk:

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Howard,_20th_Earl_of_Suffolk

Not only a very dapper chap, based on his Wiki picture, but responsible for rescuing nuclear scientists and their families and The world's entire stockpile of heavy water from the Nazis as France was being invaded, and a bomb disposal expert - which is sadly how he met his end, together with his secretary and chauffeur (both of whom assisted with defusing bombs - they called themselves the Holy Trinity).

A thoroughly interesting man, and dare I say it, somewhat more useful than some current aristocrats you could mention... thought you might all like to meet him too!

Spudlet · 04/06/2019 22:54

en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charles_Howard,_20th_Earl_of_Suffolk

Try again with the link....

Spudlet · 04/06/2019 22:55

Ffs Mumsnet. You'll have to copy and paste it to get straight to the page, I'm afraid Hmm

myrtleWilson · 04/06/2019 22:57

a positive comment... the blue that Sarah Huckabee Sanders is wearing really suits her can't stand her mealy mouthedness press officerness

A less positive comment - given how much her dress defined her arse Ivanka may as well have worn chaps tonight.

escapade1234 · 04/06/2019 23:31

So, I read Sarah Vine’s article. It’s almost about her night at the ball, lil’ ol’ Cinderella. All a bit faux-modest. But here’s the rub. She describes how Michael Gove was taken off to speak to Trump and his entourage during the post-dinner mingling. That I think is the actual point of the article. They want people to know that Gove WAS one of the chosen ones after all (along with Hunt and Boris) to have an audience with the President. It was reported all day that Gove was snubbed. Trump even said in the press conference today that he didn’t know Gove.

So that’s odd. But Sarah Vine very keen for her husband to be firmly in the frame for the top job. No chance!

escapade1234 · 04/06/2019 23:31

Oh, she says in the article that she observed Ivanka and Kate deep in conversation. Thought you’d all like to know that

SenecaFalls · 04/06/2019 23:37

This thread is making me hungry. I just sent DH out for buffalo wings. I already have key lime pie.

Speaking of FDR and also speaking of presidential food, he and Eleanor famously served the Queen's parents hot dogs on their first visit to the US. The scene is depicted in the movie Hyde Park on Hudson. The wonderful Olivia Colman plays Queen Elizabeth (later the queen mum) and Samuel West plays George VI.

AnneEyhtMeyer · 04/06/2019 23:49

Thanks - what an incredible experience. It's only when you look back at the photos and see her with the likes of Truman and Nixon that it hits home just how long she's been a player in world history. I can't imagine any other monarch having the life she's had.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 04/06/2019 23:57

Charles Howard was quite the rake in that hat @Spudlet, a man of hidden depths, that's for sure. What an interesting life.
