Mid 30s - what are items are definitely no longer suitable?

Mid 30s, size 6-8, lost my way a bit.
Chucked out a lot of stuff (all too big) and buying new. Love some of the current fashions and finally feel I can wear them due to the weight loss but now I might be too old?
I’m guessing short dresses and mini skirts are a no which is fine, I don’t want to wear them anyway. What else is a definite no?

OP. Have a word with yourself. I'm 35 and wouldn't be seen dead in either of those frumpy dresses. I'm not sure that my 69 year old mother would be too keen either, as she's extremely fashionable and drop dead gorgeous. The things I really enjoy about being in my 30s are being well off enough to buy the clothes I couldn't afford in my 20s; young enough to look amazing in them; and confident enough to feel great about myself whilst doing it. Come on! You're young! Enjoy it while it lasts!

DontDribbleOnTheCarpet · 15/05/2019 19:57

There are a few questions you need to consider when buying clothes. They are;
Do I like it?
Can I afford it?
Can I wash it?
Is the fabric natural or will it combust within ten yards of a naked flame?
Does it have pockets?

Not much else matters. If your mother doesn't like your clothes then she is free to not buy similar ones for herself.

Actually those dresses could look fabulous if styled correctly. Most clothes do if the wear is the shape they are designed for.

BishopofBathandWells · 15/05/2019 20:32

@Shopkinshurtlikelego OP I'm 38. I waved at DD yesterday and my bingo wing carried on waving long after the rest of my arm had stopped. Grin I also completely understand what you mean when you say you've lost your way - I'm struggling to find things that I think suit me, but I've gained weight since having the baby.

If I were you, had lost a load of weight and had money to spend, I'd ditch Next for a start. If you've got money look on Anthropologie or Toast, if you don't look at Zara maybe? I'm trapped in a Dorothy Perkins hellhole at the moment and desperate to escape, so I feel your pain. But the world's your oyster.

Shopkinshurtlikelego · 15/05/2019 20:36

Yeah I rarely buy next own brand to be honest - they are mainly too big, even in a six.
I buy other brands from there though, the dress is lipsy.

OP your DM sounds like a peach Hmm

Ignore her and wear what you like and what you think suits you as you are the young slim one.

Why are you even asking your DM, she's years older and will of course have completely different tastes to you. Carry on ignoring her if she makes snide comments about anything you ever wear again, chances are she will do that no matter what you wear.

SinglePringle · 15/05/2019 20:38

I am nearly 50 and whilst I wouldn’t wear either of those dresses (not my style), I wore, today, red pvc leggings (Top Shop last year), white shirt with collar, cuffs and tails sticking out from under a thin grey round-necked jumper and big white ‘90’s’ style trainers. The sort I wore first time around.

Wear.
What.
The.
Fuck.
You.
Like.

At. Any. Age.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 15/05/2019 20:44

You’ve lost so much weight, you should rock it and ignore your mum. Get your arms out.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 15/05/2019 20:45

BTW I am nearly 50 and my mum is always complaining about my attire. I care not.

Ohyesiam · 15/05/2019 20:48

Can I go round to your mums Niall my 52 year old glory, with my upper arms firmly covered, BUT MY TITS OUT?

Ohyesiam · 15/05/2019 20:49

In all,
where did that Niall come from?

Disfordarkchocolate · 15/05/2019 20:51

PS You are not middle aged. You are still young.

OhTheRoses · 15/05/2019 20:52

I'm 58 amd love the foray dress uou posted and would wear it.

My mother has fitted leather trousers and wears high heels. She's 83!

RosaWaiting · 15/05/2019 20:57

ignore your mum

there is no such thing as an item that is "no longer suitable" on account of age. That is a batshit idea.

her comment about upper arms makes me think of Gone with the Wind which is based on what, 1850s at the start? When Mammy says to Scarlett "You can't show your bosom before 12 o'clock".

well I think it was 12. Anyhoo. Doesn't matter. Wear what you like.

Fairylea · 15/05/2019 21:01

Why are you paying any attention to what your mum says?! When did anyone base their fashion choices around their mum? What happened to good old rebellion?! Grin

You can wear whatever you like, nothing is off bounds!

thedevilinablackdress · 15/05/2019 21:54

Get out round the shops and try lots of things on. Do not take your Mum. Buy things you like, feel good in and will enjoy wearing (and can afford).

Theclearing · 15/05/2019 21:57

She thinks KNEE-LENGTH, LONG SLEEVED DRESSES are too much young for you? What would she like, a long wool habit?

EsmesRedPetticoat · 15/05/2019 21:58

This should help!

Mid 30s - what are items are definitely no longer suitable?
Babes222 · 15/05/2019 22:00

You should wear the tightest, shortest, sexiest clothes you can find!! Lol but for real, wear whatever you want!!! Have fun!

DippyAvocado · 15/05/2019 22:01

When I was in my early 30s I decided I shouldn't wear mini-skirts any more. I hit 40 and realised I look great in minis and bought a load of new ones. I regret all those years of not wearing what I wanted.

So long as you aren't rocking up to the office in hot pants and a crop top, wear what you feel comfortable in.

Shelbybear · 15/05/2019 22:06

That dress is lovely and you are nice and slim you could wear whatever you want. I would seriously not listen to your mum against for any fashion advice. That dress is appropriate for someone 20 years older too!

I'm early 30's, stuff I no longer wear is maybe hot pants lol I still wear cropped tops and anything else that takes my fancy!

If it suits you, your age does not matter!

Spudlet · 15/05/2019 22:06

Midde-aged?!?! The fuck, woman?

I shall be 37 this year, am I fucking fuck middle-aged. Good grief. Wear what you like, and what you feel good in. If that's a short skirt, good. If it's not, also good. Forget about your age, ignore your mother, and do you.

expatinspain · 15/05/2019 22:08

You are not middle aged at 35 🤦🏽‍♀️

EatenByDinosaurs · 15/05/2019 22:42

EsmesRedPetticoat Grin Grin Grin

I agree 100% with previous posters, wear whatever you want and whatever makes you happy, life is far to short to do otherwise Smile. The older I get the more adventurous I get with my clothing.

EatenByDinosaurs · 15/05/2019 22:43

Yeah, I also had a wtaf moment at middle aged in mid thirties. Nope, not even close Grin
