Oh thank you @laska! I’ll have a look...I feel ill if I cut out carbs and can manage low fat better.
Ultimately I hate hate dieting as I think I should be able to maintain a healthy weight with just a normal healthy diet.
The key is moderate exercise I reckon my sedentary job (and shite U.K. winter weather when I dread being outdoors for long) is I’m sure why I’ve piled on a stone in the last 6/8 months.
I should get a dog???Grin

Laska2Meryls · 14/04/2019 08:51

..its not really low carb, just different carbs, beans are ok, and some flours ,(just not wheat and refined sugars) . olive oil is definitely ok .. i think its a really sustainable way of eating for me, (and was, until I crashed out, because of other stresses)..

justilou1 · 14/04/2019 09:08

I agree about avoiding low-fat diets. There are so many better ways, and most modern medical advice agrees with this too. They state that healthy fats in moderation are necessary. Low fat diets are actually incredibly bad for your brain!!! And they tend to load low fat foods with all kids of other icky chemicals that aren’t food-based!!! *rant over now.

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 09:10

@laska had a look and it’s totally manageable! Let’s do it!
I’ll order the book. I can manage 800 cals twice a week and eat a Med diet anyway (tending towards vegan these days due to DC, hence the pulses).

Ellapaella · 14/04/2019 09:10

Do you have the book laska? Having a brief look there that diet seems to make a lot of sense and is quite interesting.
I think I have quite high insulin sensitivity as even a bowl of porridge will give me a sudden insulin rush half an hour later, my blood sugar will drop and then I'll want to eat sweet or starchy stuff to get it back up. I try and avoid all those white high starchy foods now for that reason. I avoid all white bread, pasta and potatoes and replace with wholemeal versions or sweet potato instead as much as I can. I really like some of the research into diet and exercise that Micheal Mosely has done - seems to make a lot of sense.

You have all inspired me with your talk of diets. I'm going to do my first run since my op today. Am going to go for it. Have been a bit nervous about doing it but nows the time to seize the moment and get it done. Wish me luck!

Thank you for giving me hope I don’t have to give up my beloved olive oil btw. Last time I shifted 1 1:2 stone I did it with slimming world but I hate their low fat ethos.
What the hell is wrong with having avocados occasionally and olives?
Always deeply suspicious and I don’t like sweets or cakes so it seemed the only way was super low fat 😩

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 09:16

Yes @Ella let’s do it! Tbh you’re slim and have a dog Grin so you possibly need it a lot less than us but if it’ll stabilise your insulin levels let’s motivate each other Wink
With my frequent work travelling it would help if I can just choose healthy things on the non fasting days rather than just give up altogether as no fat food is almost impossible to find in Paris...

Ellapaella · 14/04/2019 09:21

I'm a cardiac nurse -soyo and tell my patients to eat some olive oil, avocados and unsaturated fat. Even a small amount of real butter and full fat yoghurt etc is actually better for you than the low fat versions. The low fat stuff is packed full of corn starch which is nasty stuff. Everything in small amounts and moderation is the way forward.

OP posts:
SoyYo · 14/04/2019 09:29

Yes @Ella I like cheese but dislike milk and cream intensely, not keen on yoghurts either so I have a slice or two of cheddar a day just to have some calcium in my body.
I think I have “fat” genes on my DM side compensated by “thin” genes on DF...hence not being skinny but normal weight till menopause coupled with a sedentary job conspired.
I was brought up on a Med diet, with lots of fruit and veg so I should be able to manage it specially if I give up the bread and 🍷at least in the first weeks (but also grew up with adults always having a glass of wine with their meals every single day of the year Grin)

grannycake · 14/04/2019 09:59

I struggled with my weight as a child/teenager but managed via low calorie diet to lose the excess in my mid twenties. Kept this up through three children with no issues until the menopause when I put on 2 stone I am only 5 feet and have a small frame and I looked like a ball. I used the 5:2 as none of my tried and trusted methods worked and am now back to my ideal and have managed to stay there for 3 years. However, I still fast every Monday, don't ear more than 1000 calories on other weekdays but eat more or less what I fancy at weekends. I haven't given up carbs and I always eat full fat - I would much sooner eat less of something and have the taste. I don't snack and only eat "real" food. I'm happy with this as it's good for my health and allows me to wear nice clothes!

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 10:22

Thanks @granny. I was always a good weight for my height (5’3.5” I always remember the 1/2” Wink)...never heavier than 9 stone till I hit an early menopause at 40.
Gradually went up to 10stone in my 40s. Then disaster struck in my 50’s
I managed to get down to 9st 10lb with slimming world and now I’m 10st 10lb 😩😩😩
I don’t think I can ever be 9 stone again without serious constant vigilance but I need to lose that stone which puts me within healthy BMI
I’ve added to my Amazon basket the fast food diet and exercise books, do I need a recipe book too?

grannycake · 14/04/2019 10:50

l use My Fitness Pal as you can input your own recipes and it works out the calorie content -but I will never eat homemade icecream again-

I didn't think I would get back to my pre menopause weight but I have and I have managed to maintain it for a couple of years. Its not an instant fix - after the initial month I was only losing about 0.5 lbs a month but it is sustainable and it means I can still eat/drink what I want - just not all at once

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 10:54

Ooh I can’t imagine going back to my pre menopause weight (between 8 and 9 stone) but hey I’ll be happy just to get back to my new “post menopause best” weight of circa 9st 10lb...I’ve ordered the book!
Now for Will Power 🙏 hope you ladies will keep me on the straight and narrow Smile

dontcallmelen · 14/04/2019 11:18

Crikey, you have all been chatty trying catch up with healthy eating talk.
Soy I’m the same I detest milk & cream but love cheese.

Laska2Meryls · 14/04/2019 11:23

I've read MMs previous books ,and according to Amazon the new one Fast800 isnt that much different,

So I've decided not to join up online, but re-do the 'free' version ( more money for Hush and perhaps that exercise bike) .. Have just ordered the Blood sugar Diet recipe book, which I had previously looked at in Waterstones.. You dont need one soy but I did think this one was good..

But yes with support here from my Husista sisters, I can do it .. so im starting my 8 weeks tomorrow (only tomorrow because we have leftovers from last night...) .. Ok, i havent got up yet !!!!! but I am now and putting my 'Cycling lycra' on (that is an old pair of leggings) and Ill go surprise my Bike again and see if I can do that circuit again .. Its had such a lovely sleep in the shed for these past few years it may be in shock... Grin

Hope your run goes ok Ella im sure you will pace yourself..

Ninkaninus · 14/04/2019 11:25

Heyyy everyone!

Very quick question - I’m looking at buying some Hush lounge wear and I really need to know what size to get. Currently I’m an M&S 12 so more of a big 12, approaching a 14 in other shops (mostly due to my big boobs), so do I need a size L?

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 11:26

Glad I’m not the only weirdo @len
I actually managed to stay below 10st for 2+ years (till the last 6/8 months) so I know I can do it.
What puts me off revisiting the SW diet is that it was really geared up to GB bud taste: lots of “sin free” puds all the other slimmers in my group used to wax lyrical about but I’m not a pudding/dessert eater and so didn’t see the advantage.
Bloody baked beans (not keen) and things like oats soaked up in fat free youghurt (overnight oats). All foods that make me thoroughly miserable and I remember sooo resenting not being able to have my olive oil and occasional avocado.
Yes I think I’ll get on better with Dr Mosley Med based diet...

dontcallmelen · 14/04/2019 11:26

I have been referred by my consultant to the local gym, for a heartsmart fitness programme, when I had my check up a few ago I was telling her that I had to run for the bus & how it had frightened me, as I could barely breathe & thought I was going to pass out, it’s very difficult for me to exercise as the fatigue & breathlessness can be really problematic, so I’m glad that I have been referred but also a bit scared it runs for twelve weeks, my first appointment is on Thursday.

Laska2Meryls · 14/04/2019 11:27

.feeling so much more positive today, (Hushista chat has helped) yesterday was a bad one.... .. SO ok, up Laska UP....

dontcallmelen · 14/04/2019 11:28

weeks

dontcallmelen · 14/04/2019 11:29

Yeahy glad you are feeling a bit better today Laska & exercise definitely improves mood.

Ninkaninus · 14/04/2019 11:34

And because I barged into a diet and healthy eating discussion, I’d like to vouch for low carbing/MM/blood sugar diet. Works wonders. I found out I had type 2 diabtetes some years back, completely unexpectedly because I was slightly overweight but not by much. I decided to take it in hand with diet alone and just cut out all refined carbs, all sugar, and based my eating on LCHF principles. I lost three stone in three months, and sorted out my blood glucose issues. I also felt well for the first time In years. It was like night and day. BIWI runs an excellent low carbing bootcamp here on MN which is supportive, friendly and most importantly, easy to navigate and really works. She’s just finished one but there will be another running in May.

Thanks in advance, btw, to anyone who is able to answer my question on Hush sizing. Smile

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 11:35

I’m sure it’ll build your self confidence and fitness @len. You’re tiny so not carrying excess weight and you may surprise yourself as all the running around dgd must be making your fitter than you believe.

Yeay @laska I’m struggling with my DS2 at the moment. Badly. Would rather not dwell on it (he starts therapy finally! On Tuesday). So we need something good to aim for...
My back is still a bit twingy and I reckon I’ve beeb holding on to stress in my body due to the difficult Home situation and work demands. I don’t have any other explanation for doing such damage just by bending over and twisting to shave my legs...I do have quite a strong core and fairly good flexibility after years of Pilates Hmm

SoyYo · 14/04/2019 11:38

@ninka thank you for the boot camp tip, I may visit that thread for inspiration though I have enough investment on this thread and most of the time all I can keep up with!Grin
