Ooh the rock star thing just isn’t true for a lot of people, esp young people
FYI I assist on a mentoring scheme (meetings twice a month with the same groups, giving access to different career options). They’re great kids in SE London and it’s a BAME group, but every time I’ve said about H&M (we once considered asking them to attend maybe) we get these responses : they’re old (!!! Suppose they do seem old to teens); they don’t care about us, they’re just rich; they’ve got “white saviour” complex and the commonwealth is basically just a leftover of colonialism; they’re posh; they can just run off to their castles; they don’t work. Basically none of these kids supports the idea of monarchy and H&M don’t change that. There’s no link there to any of the royals, and H as a “rock star” idea just puts him more at a distance.
FWIW I do agree with them on the commonwealth point, H&M have to be so careful to use it as a platform for others, not a cause they own. One of the kids said “why do we have a white guy in charge of it”, I know that’s not H’s role but it’s an uncomfortable truth. The commonwealth is a great idea “led” by an Etonian with good intentions, and it’s not good enough IMO. The same boy said M is “just a rich girl from NY” (I think he meant LA).
Anyway remember H&M only seem young if you’re their age or above :) they’re positively middle aged to teenagers!
