Forgive my ignorance, but are skinny jeans still in, or straight leg, or what? Thanks! :) (Living in Brighton in my thirties, if age or location makes a difference!)

I like very slim fitting but not stretchy/skinny fitting jeans. They are quite hard to find, especially in black. I have a river island pair and a fat face pair which are particularly nice. I find skinny jeans/Jeggings make my legs look bigger whereas this fit makes them look much slimmer.

I'm wearing my wide slouchy jeans with white trainers or chunky flat lace up boots - I have always loved slouchy, I hail it's return and the demise of the cropped trouser - actually don't care as long as some long trousers finally start to hit the shops again, I'll be happy.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 19/02/2019 07:56

How about if they are your own jeans but are ill fitting and look like they could belong to your friend's mum sleepy?

chapthedoor · 19/02/2019 08:06

Straight ankle length seem to be in but I am seeing more bootcut. For the last couple of years I've only been wearing skinny in winter tucked into boots, the rest of the time it's slim/boyfriends either rolled up or ankle length. Much more comfortable

TheExtraGuineaPig · 19/02/2019 08:08

I like the slim girlfriend jeans from Zara ... although the waistband label actually says "slim girlfriend" which sounds like a boast.

I'd like some wide-legged but I need to think about shoes/ boots

chapthedoor · 19/02/2019 08:12

I want wide leg ones too but not sure about them

UnperfectLife · 19/02/2019 08:23

Mom jeans look best on non- moms. I think that high waist is frumpy and middle aged and accentuates any 'mom' tum by sitting just above it!!! I find a medium rise that goes across any 'mum' 'tum' reins it in.
Also dislike the cropped flare, even more so when it's frayed to draw extra attention to it. Makes long legged models look short of leg- and emperor's-new-clothes- style ridiculous.
Skinnies are still the staple. Not exciting. Not fashion- but that's a compliment.

fancynancyclancy · 19/02/2019 08:37

I still wear my skinnies particularly in black & don’t think they will be going anywhere. The shops are really trying to wean us off them though. I can’t stand bootcut & not a huge fan of mom jeans as I don’t like cropped waists. Do like boyfriends & the straight styles that are out. Apart from trainers/sportswear the 90s resurgence needs to die for me, if still looks so dated.

All the students round here seem to wear jeans which are skinny, a few inches too short and fraying at the bottom.

Or mum jeans.

Racheyg · 19/02/2019 08:47

I live in my Levi's 501 ct they are tapered so fit nicely while still a little lose

Also have a nice pair of high waisted Levi line 8 I think they are called.

I prefer jeans with no or very little Lycra

notanothernam · 19/02/2019 08:50

Skinny jeans haven't gone anywhere, very much still everywhere I look, perhaps a bit more variety in what is fashionable now though.

Yippeee · 19/02/2019 08:51

Skinnies are still everywhere in the shops. I have tried to get a different shape but it’s hard. I tried cropped loose jeans from next and mint velvet and did not find them flattering on the backside so sticking with what I’ve got for now.

Yippeee · 19/02/2019 08:53

I haven’t seen anyone in bootcuts for years (apart from Cheryl Cole.)

outofnothing · 19/02/2019 08:53

Skinny jeans look good on skinny people. They make my legs look like parsnips.

Herja · 19/02/2019 08:56

I need mid height or high waisted, with the waist section tight, so it sort of holds in the loose skin bit, but I'd quite like some jeans that weren't super tight for the legs. Anyone found anything like that?

Floisme · 19/02/2019 09:34

I am starting to think the unthinkable: that we may be witnessing the beginning of the end of jeans as a fashion item. You do sometimes get a lull between the dominant style faltering and the next one taking over but I've never known it go on as long as this.

Anyway for what it's worth, this winter I've been wearing 10 year-old Next relaxed skinnies - which to my eye are indistinguishable from girlfriends. When it gets warmer, I like an ankle length, curved / barrel leg shape.

Thankssomuch · 19/02/2019 09:49

I think anything goes now, in jeans, it’s all about how you style them.

ShabbyAbby · 19/02/2019 10:34

Well, if location does matter then it would be really naff acid wash 90s Mum jeans for Brighton

Anywhere else, boyfriend, girlfriend or mum jeans

Jeackyll · 19/02/2019 11:20

I think it’s supposed to be those “mom jeans” things but I have not seen them look remotely good on anyone at all, even my incredibly stylish, edgy fiend who is well known for ring able to wear any trend and look cool. She wears them but I think they look crap even on her and she’s gorgeous.

SteelRiver · 19/02/2019 11:21

Straight cut as they're more flattering on me, and stretchy. Very comfy.

Skirmisher · 19/02/2019 11:24

I'd be more than happy for jeans to go on a little sabbatical.

I agree, I feel like they add weight to the stomach area, even the very flat of stomach. I just can't get past Barb from Stranger Things, I just agree they aren't very flattering.

I'm a size 14 pear shape and skinnies look fine on me as the way I look at it more loose relaxed clothes make me look bigger. Straight legged trousers are the worst as I look like I have thighs all the way down GrinBlush

Floisme · 19/02/2019 11:51

origami Grin I'm not suggesting jeans will disappear - I think there's far too much money to be made for that to ever happen. It's jeans as fashion that I've started idly wondering about.
I can't ever recall them not being around but I do remember when they were strictly for off-duty - you'd never have dreamed of wearing them for a night out or to work or to meet the in-laws, not even with heels and a nice top! That's a relatively recent trend and that's what I think might not last forever.

jacksonmaine · 19/02/2019 12:00

@sleepydebillo
a bit like youngsters who die their hair grey, it looks cute with their baby face, but on anyone over the age of 35 it just looks aging.
