Forgive my ignorance, but are skinny jeans still in, or straight leg, or what? Thanks! :) (Living in Brighton in my thirties, if age or location makes a difference!)

I really want some non-cropped, wide-leg (not flared, wide all the way down), high-waisted jeans as they're what suit me best.

Can't find them anywhere. Hmm

TantricTwist · 18/02/2019 22:00

Well as it's still boot wearing weather then definitely skinny to tuck into boots.

Once it warms up I'll be back to wearing my rolled up boyfriend jeans as I wont mind the air getting to my ankles.

TantricTwist · 18/02/2019 22:01

OP surely if you live in Brighton you will have seen that people wear whatever Jeans they like without worrying about the latest 'fashion'

Widowodiw · 18/02/2019 22:06

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal Boden have some high waisted sailor jeans. Pricey though .

SleepyDibillo · 18/02/2019 22:15

I have a feeling mom jeans are slightly ironic - they are totally frumpy looking so only look good if you're young and skinny. But on someone who's actually a mum, certainly once they're over a certain age - they just look frumpy.

It's a bit like youngsters who die their hair grey, it looks cute with their baby face, but on anyone over the age of 35 it just looks aging.

Averysmallcasserole · 18/02/2019 22:21

The mom jeans I saw in Primark gave me awful flashbacks

Processedpea · 18/02/2019 22:23

I like Levi 714 straight leg atm they sit on the waist and are v soft tons of colours too

donajimena · 18/02/2019 22:29

I bought these. Skinny on thigh and almost boyfriend below the knee. I love them immensely but I wouldn't dress them up.
I feel awesome in them in chunky boots and sweater. If I was going casual for an evening id wear gazelles.

What type of jeans are in at the moment?
Skirmisher · 18/02/2019 22:29

The mom jeans with the baggy stomach and gathered waist that scream '1990s American sitcom' are not great, but the more fitted style (whilst still being way more relaxed than skinny) can be very flattering.

LaFreaka · 18/02/2019 22:31

@GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal I got mine from Uniqlo U. They have brought out a few different pairs from the slightly tulip style last year, flat fronted and tucked - I love them all! Also if you like work wear Arket and &other stories have some wide leg jeans with heavy stitching. And maybe Me&em have some too.

AnyFucker · 18/02/2019 22:43

I am wearing these to death at the moment

SleepyDibillo · 18/02/2019 22:48

They look like they've already been worn to death!

AnyFucker · 18/02/2019 22:57

I know. Not with heels though. Very dressed down. Very.

RabbitseatDogs · 18/02/2019 23:17

I have owned about 80,00000 pairs of jeans, I've now culled everything and have kept 3 pairs.
Pair one:12 year old 'men's' Lee, raw denim ones that I bought when pregnant with DS. They're in tatters now but I keep patching them up. They are big on me, I'm little.
Pair 2. Levi's raw denim boys jeans that are still dark blue but I'm wearing in (Levi's don't do 'normal'raw denim jeans for women. Fuck knows why! The fact they were from the boys section also makes them VAT free.
Pair 3. Nudie jeans (again men's!) that I've had about 5 years from raw denim and they're nicely worn now.
I've culled by shoes boots too. I wear all jeans rolled with either: Frye boots, Frye biker boots, Ugg boots, Crocs (🙄😁), sandals or one of two pairs of medium heel court (ish) shoes.

I have also culled jumpers. And jackets. They're all mostly vintage but I'm being Geraldine and trying to only keep the things I wear/love.

Yes, I did digress. Sorry. My advice is go for classic, raw denim jeans and love them like your child.

Eesha · 18/02/2019 23:20

I wear skinnies for going out but my flares are so comfy that I might consider them out too!

Jon65 · 18/02/2019 23:30

Greebols Cos have some v nice high waist wide leg jeans.

SlinkyDinkyDoo · 18/02/2019 23:40

And the difference between boyfriend and mum jeans is?

AnyFucker · 18/02/2019 23:44

Lemme have a go at this but happy to be corrected...

Boyfriend...low waist, straight leg, distressed, often button fly

Mom...high waist, tapered leg, might be pale/faded but not usually ripped, zip fly

How did I do ?

DippyAvocado · 18/02/2019 23:47

I can confirm from my visit to a well known shopping centre yesterday that every single young person is wearing high waisted very skinny jeans with a cropped jumper identical to the ones I wore in 1994.

Skinnies or slim leg were most in display in the shops still.

SleepyDibillo · 19/02/2019 00:02

Mom jeans look you've found a pair of your mum's old jeans, the frumpy ones she wore in the 80s or early 90s.

Boyfriend jeans look like you borrowed your boyfriend's jeans.

Girlfriend jeans look like you borrow your girlfiend's jeans and they don't really fit you properly, but you try and get away with it anyway.

Basically you can wear anyone's jeans so long as they're not yours.

HarrietSchulenberg · 19/02/2019 00:20

Skinny jeans are horrible and always have been, even in the early 80s (with leg warmers).
I'm still wearing bootcuts from about 1998 and, hooray, I'm apparently now pretty fashionable again. I have some boyfriend/straight leg ones that are OKish too.
Mum jeans are like skinnies; they make me shudder with flashbacks to my 80s youth.

tilder · 19/02/2019 06:40

I am following this thread with interest. Having lived in skinny jeans for years i am reluctant to change. I have skinny legs but an apple waist. Havd not got on well with the boyfriend look.

Will check out those high waisted but wide jeans. Probably with new boots too. Am guessing ankle boots though.

GreeboIsMySpiritAnimal · 19/02/2019 06:42

Thanks for the jean suggestions, will check them out.

DonaldTwain · 19/02/2019 06:52

Gap wide leg might also work for you Greebol. I bought s pair a month ago and am never out of them. After skinnies it’s liberation

origamiunicorn · 19/02/2019 06:54

I love skinnies as imo anything flared or boot cut still feels dated to me and I've love a pair of straight legged roll ups for Summer but can anyone tell me where you can buy these without huge rips in!
