Is there a 'how to look expensive' thread for 2019?

I don't even know if there was a 2018 one, but I'm nostalgic for the original threads. Grin

There were some posted last year including how to look expensive ... in the summer and one for the winter. Do a search and it should pop up

halfwitpicker · 21/01/2019 21:09

Can we have one for 2019?

user1466690252 · 21/01/2019 21:11

Joining if there’s a 2019 one and this is it!

StephanieNicks · 21/01/2019 21:14

They're always really daft.
People will state the obvious like"have clean hair and nails" as if they're sharing a secret no-one would have thought of.
And anyway, one woman's "expensive" is another woman's "footballers wives"
LikeI said - daft.

C0untDucku1a · 21/01/2019 21:20

I binged Friends From college on Netflix this weekend. The women look so well put together and i always ... don’t.

Saladcreamie · 22/01/2019 10:09

Placemarking Grin

I’m hourglass as well (did the bra intervention last year which does work and I’m a 30F)

My main challenge is how to look classic/expensive/etc without looking TOO “inappropriately dressy for occasion”

Love getting plain wool second hand charity shop coats as tbh its all anyone sees most of the time.

Badtasteflump · 22/01/2019 10:20

Stephanie nobody's forcing you to read the thread! I enjoy it, personally....

Salad I agree re the wool coat. I spent a few hours in a very expensive area recently where Kate Middleton pops up now and again and did a bit of people watching (since I couldn't afford to actually buy anything Grin).

Just about everybody seemed to be wearing the same uniform, which was a bit dull really - younger women were KM wannabees; riding boots (or dirty Hunter wellies), dark skinny jeans, gilets and sunnies balanced on heads. Older women all seemed to be wearing long camel wool coats. Lots of skinny silk scarves floating around.

Bit boring really.

Badtasteflump · 22/01/2019 10:23

But yes, I have a long wool coat and when I chuck that on it looks as if I've made more effort than I have.

AhoyDelBoy · 22/01/2019 12:05

I’ve read some of the old ones and they were really good. I wasn’t on MN at the time.

I guess it gets tricky as like StephanieNicks says one woman's "expensive" is another woman's "footballers wives". So true. On one of the threads, where people started sharing photos of looks they liked, it was clear we are in different paths Grin.

They’re still fun though so I’m in Smile

AhoyDelBoy · 22/01/2019 12:05

On different paths

Saladcreamie · 22/01/2019 18:37

That’s the thing - I want to look more expensive but also it has to be weather/environment/budget acceptable? And also be flattering. Gilets and dark blue jeans are “ok” on me but I’m not white and I have relatively large top half so that cab stray into frumpiness on me. Ditto with scarves.

Flat knee boots always good though.

fashiondevotee · 22/01/2019 19:16

I'm glad I'm not the only one longing for a revival of this topic... Grin

I feel like it's a bit too late in the day to invest in anymore winter clothes (despite the supposed snow onslaught), although I did order this coat in the colour grape in the French Connection sale, so we shall see...

I love a how to look expensive Thread!

Doobigetta · 22/01/2019 20:35

What Stephanie and Ahoy said. These threads were great when they first started out, but they got further and further away from the original idea and ended up pretty much as “how to look as though you watched Trinny and Susannah once and had a shower last week”. It does unfortunately underline the ultimate pointlessness of S&B- unless every post is accompanied by a photo, you can’t tell whether the person giving you advice has any style whatsoever. You might be taking fashion tips from someone you think looks awful, and what’s the point of that?

user1457017537 · 22/01/2019 22:10

I don’t know about that! Coco Chanel was no raving beauty but could tell you a thing or two about style and elegance and how to look expensive!

ArtisanPopcorn · 22/01/2019 22:14

I'd like a 'how to look expensive if you're short and fat' but I'm not sure that's even possible Blush

Crazydaisy000 · 22/01/2019 22:25

Admire her.. always in print and looks glam.to wear print and look so well in it is hard. Her hair style has not changed though.. it is a minus in my eyes, probably because I fought hard to move away from bob.

mycatplotsdeath · 22/01/2019 23:51

I've just got back from Paris and those French ladies, looked amazing

halfwitpicker · 23/01/2019 01:58

I need one of those beige /caramel woolen coats that wraparound like a dressing gown. Reckon it'd make me look minted.

I don't suit beige though Confused.

Looking towards summer, I had some brown leather sandals a while back that were trimmed with gold, they had a low heel and just looked classy, need to find a replacement for those guys.

fatpatsthong · 23/01/2019 08:25

I hear you artisan!

I live in a semi rural area between a posh city and a not so posh city. I find the expensive looking people are rural so not me at all. When I have to to London for work I look like a right bumpkin/envious as that's the kind of expensive I would like which a, I don't suit and b, isn't that practical for my lifestyle.

I would like a 'how to dress the best you' thread but that's impossible as everyone is so different (eg short, a bit fat, likes colour and a tiny bit quirky).

ArtisanPopcorn · 24/01/2019 07:07

Yes although even these threads run into that problem as ones persons 'expensive' is another person's 'lower middle class which seems to be the worst insult on Mumsnet! Grin

SouthWestmom · 24/01/2019 07:44

Maybe 'groomed' is the word rather than 'expensive' ?

WonderWoman2019 · 24/01/2019 07:48

I'm in.

ChangoMutney · 24/01/2019 07:50

I’m in, love these threads.

FairyLightFiend · 24/01/2019 08:06

I’m in! I’m losing weight at the moment and fantasising about the lovely clothes I’m going to fit into (gives me something to do when I’m not eating carbs...).
