Is there a 'how to look expensive' thread for 2019?

I don't even know if there was a 2018 one, but I'm nostalgic for the original threads. Grin

Quite a few Hobbs trenches on eBay. Also a very nice looking Reiss one if you're a 14. Going in the next hour.

Is the Saskia soft?

lightningstrikes · 31/03/2019 21:00

Haven't yes, the Saskia is soft and made of heavy cotton with a bit of stretch. Not crumply like some of them can be.

ethelfleda · 31/03/2019 21:08

Can anyone help me with where to buy plain, long sleeve cotton t-shirts that are good quality and fit well??

Sigh81 · 31/03/2019 21:55

Joining. Though as inspiration for things to wear from my existing wardrobe, rather than new things. Clothes are my weakness. I have so many beautiful things - hopefully talking about our lovely day to day outfits will keep me satisfied with what I have 😂

TheWombat · 31/03/2019 22:28

I’m in! Is looking ‘expensive/stylish’ in late spring/summer always more difficult somehow? I definitely always appear more disheveled - perhaps it’s just that you can’t throw a blazer on and be done with it..

And I too am a Hobbs trench fan. I have it in navy and wear it so much.

HaventGotAllDay · 01/04/2019 06:09

I might keep an eye on eBay for a Saskia then, thank you! (Am in furrin and don't get to the UK till the end of June) so people have to go and feel things for me! Grin

My favourite plain t shirts are M&S, I have about 70 (according to dp) all alike. (I have about 10 really) A mixture of their supima ones which are quite longline (I'm 5'10 and they easily reach my bum) and my favourites, because of how they hang, their viscose ones.

Is anyone watching Trinny on Facebook. She is a million times better than she was in the 90s and noughties. She does the twinning with a member of her staff - Trinny being tall and skinny and Chloe being younger and rounder and they pick the same outfit to wear. A couple of weeks who they picked a navy cotton stretch blazer from Marks and teamed it with blue and white striped t.shirt underneath, plus a red and white t.shirt also from Marks. It looked fresh and spring like - put together but easy enough and not too expensive.

Redandblue11 · 01/04/2019 09:38

Risking asking a silly question here.
KC how do you watch stuff on Facebook? Does Trinny have a program there?

Regarding seasons and looking expensive... TBH I prefer to call it stylish, my personal style is I hope trying to get some interesting pieces, not overdo it, make up and hair looking as is I haven’t done much to it although I might have spent a considerable amount anyhow I am disgresing from seasons ... I think I look better, as my skin is at its best with a slinght glow and not washed out like in winter.
Dresses of a simple cut work for me, navy, blues in general or whites can work great and “expensive” IMO.

Here is a couple of things comes to mind. You throw a dress, shades a bit of mascara and blusher and you do not need to worry about layers, coats, scarf, hat etc that crumple the style.
white

navy

KC225 · 01/04/2019 10:55

Redandblue11 Yes, she does these podcasts. Trinny London. My favourites are the Zara shop ups. Its one of her team following her around Zara whilst she is saying these will look great with this, this is so on trend and this is a great dupe for Prada. She also has Beauty editors, make up artists, stylist in a the back of a black cab to ask them her best products. Recently, it was Josh Wood giving advice on colouring hair at home. Want to book one of the make up lessons (her brand is Trinny London) but not in the UK at the moment.

Redandblue11 · 01/04/2019 13:13

Apologies for my appalling writing.
In post above I was talking about looking better in late spring / summer, I think for me is easier in those seasons rather than in cold weather.
Hence i tried to link a couple of dresses that illustrates that.

Thanks KC I will check it out! I had no idea people were using fb like that Blush

HarrietM87 · 01/04/2019 16:58

Thanks for the Cos tip on the trench! I went there today and didn’t get that one but instead got a navy trench/Mac type coat that I Hope looks quite chic:

Carriemac · 01/04/2019 17:15

Love that navy shift dress redandblue

lightningstrikes · 02/04/2019 08:20

Ooohh, love the trench Harriet! I'm tempted as I'd like one in navy. I was in Cos a couple of days ago and picked up some cropped, wide leg wool trousers for 70% off! No good for now, but will wear with simple knee high boots next autumn. Such a bargain at £23!

TapasForTwo · 02/04/2019 09:48

I think trench coats look smart, but I don't have a practical need for one. Where I live when it is damp I need something much warmer than a trench coat. Also, I drive to work so I don't need it to commute.

Changing the clothing article subject. I bought this jacket last year, and have worn and worn it. I washes beautifully and goes with everything I wear. The only thing I don't like about it are the zipper pulls becase they clatter on the desk at work.

HaventGotAllDay · 02/04/2019 11:34

That jacket is nice.

See, this is why I love MN- people are so snooty about places like Roman (ditto Phase Eight which is where I had the most gorgeous fine knitted navy top which I have worn for wedddings, christenings etc for years and that I have bought 3 identical of, in case one falls to pieces!) I feel fabulous and posh and groomed in it) yet all these places have little gems hidden away.

I have just won a pair of Hobbs navy cigarette trousers on the Bay of E.

Crankybitch · 02/04/2019 12:32

Jacket looks nice

Have never heard of Roman before - why are people snooty about it?

Petalflowers · 02/04/2019 16:38

One of my favourite cardigans is from Edinburgh Woolen Mill..it’s a white, smart casual cardigan, ideal for slinging over a summer dress in the evening.

All shops have their gems, and their monstrosities, and what looks good on person, will make another look frumpy.

TapasForTwo · 02/04/2019 16:52

Exactly Petalflowers

One thing I don't understand on MN is why it is such a badge of honour to never do any ironing. I don't want to look like a crumpled mess. I want to wear crisp, ironed shirts and crease free cotton dresses. At 60 I feel that the crumpled look will just age me.

HaventGotAllDay · 02/04/2019 19:04

People on MN will start to be snooty about this very thread before long, they always are, for some reason it's infra dig to buy from anywhere other than Hush or Mint Velvet.
You tend to find Roman in outlets like McCarthur Glen. Or online as I can now see!

TapasForTwo · 02/04/2019 21:12

We have a Roman Originals in our local shopping centre. Most of what they sell doesn't appeal to me, but they are always worth a look in for the odd gem.

spamandbeans · 20/04/2019 10:53
  • Ponte trousers are apparently fabulous. I don't have any, but I did have a ponte blazer. I tend to wear Boden Richmonds or the M&S ones (from this thread last year I do believe!) for work. Been putting various Hobbs, Jigsaw and Jaeger ones into my JL wishlist as well. *

What are the m&s ones please? Could you link please? X

LuxuryWoman2018 · 20/04/2019 11:53

Ah, the threads back!

I’m going shopping today, need summer trousers urgently, I have plenty of sandals so won’t even look but could do with a couple of tops. I’m also hankering after an orange bag, crossbody I think to add to my huge collection

Inliverpool1 · 20/04/2019 19:58

25% off in sainsburys bought myself a nice sleeveless red shirt dress that was promptly nicked by the 19 year old of the house

Ellapaella · 21/04/2019 12:09

I'm on the hunt for a pair of culottes that are light enough for summer and warm weather, I would like them to have a high waist, preferably fitted waist and not drawstring. If anyone sees any please let me know!

woodhill · 21/04/2019 12:42

I looked at Roman but it seemed to be a lot of synthetic fabrics which I try to avoid.

Is Seasalt too frumpy in most people's opinion.
