I don't even know if there was a 2018 one, but I'm nostalgic for the original threads. Grin

Would it be ok if I resurrected this thread with a new season nearly upon us?

ShopoholicIn · 29/03/2019 23:31

Oh how I missed this thread .. love the oasis coat. Yes I thought the same its almost a copy of ted baker.. sadly oasis coat is sold out..

Glower · 30/03/2019 00:03

I’d recommend following TijanSerena and her mum LucyCamilas for expensive looking style! I’ve attached their most recent insta. They have amazing style imo, I’ve bought a fair few things from Tijan’s recommendation and a coat directly from her!

Is there a 'how to look expensive' thread for 2019?
HaventGotAllDay · 30/03/2019 06:15

I was on the threads last year and would love to see them resurrected. My Me and Em Palazzo pants are proof!! As well as tapping my fingers waiting for the big Coach sale for a turnlock Edie!

Liveinthepresent · 30/03/2019 12:17

Can I join please .
I love these threads . Have always been quite a classic dresser but now what I need to figure out is how on earth you pull it off when you suddenly realise it’s way harder when you are a stone heavier .
I need to address the weight too!

Anyone got tips ?

hoochymamgu · 30/03/2019 13:37

Me too please!

I think this is something for myself really. To feel better about me, frumpy and old and overweight Grin

Right. Shave legs and paint toenails today, there's a start Smile

Can anyone suggest a nice pair of trousers for work? I wear dresses as a default that hide my fat tummy but would love suggestions...

Redandblue11 · 30/03/2019 17:08

Lurking here at the moment...
Hooch what is your budget for work trousers?
I find if you are very sure of the size and style, eBay can be great. I got 2 pairs a blue and a black pair of Joseph trousers in great condition for £20 ish each.
Now, trousers are such a difficult thing to pull off from eBay as wrong cut etc will make them look awful on you (I learnt the hard way), but after being sure of the cut and size I knew these were going to be good. amazing quality and cut. Dressed minimalistic they look effortlessly expensive IMO.
I am not sure if I am trying to look “expensive “ per say lately, but instead I am trying to look Not cheap, i.e not fast fashion and getting second hand good quality. Dress agencies are great, a bit more expensive than charity and eBay but well curated stuff.
I still do a bit of shopping, latest is a couple of pieces from Cos that I am hoping look classic and quality .

Redandblue11 · 30/03/2019 17:09

I just painted my toenails and put clear varnish on nails Grin

MulberryPeony · 30/03/2019 19:53

I definitely used some of the tips on the last thread and have been buying more neutrals. One thing I have been seeing on insta has been cream jeans with a white t-shirt. Haven’t made my mind up on that comb yet...

ethelfleda · 30/03/2019 20:27

I used last year’s summer thread and it was brilliant! Last summer I definitely felt smart all season. Can’t wait to get my summer wardrobe out again! I too have started buying a better quality capsule wardrobe rather than buying loads and loads of cheaper stuff.
I’ve just ordered a couple of Breton stripe long sleeve tops and some white skinny jeans from next. As well as some tan suede loafers and a tan leather messenger bag.
I also like a preppy style - I love skinny jeans with an oversize sweatshirt (usually get from the men’s section) and a pair of clean converse for more chilled out days.
This spring, I shall be wearing jumpers and layering rather than jackets.

HaventGotAllDay · 30/03/2019 22:45

Ponte trousers are apparently fabulous. I don't have any, but I did have a ponte blazer.
I tend to wear Boden Richmonds or the M&S ones (from this thread last year I do believe!) for work. Been putting various Hobbs, Jigsaw and Jaeger ones into my JL wishlist as well.

I have a wedding at the end of April and do not have a clue what to wear. It's an Italian one (I am the poster in the south of Italy) and they are so blingy on occasions. It might BE expensive but it sure doesn't look it. Grin

mrspk · 31/03/2019 08:32

Watching with interest. I'm 45 and don't know how to dress anymore. My work clothes in particular feel dreary and cheap. I think I probably need to move to the higher end of the high street, e.g jigsaw and Hobbs rather than m&S and next. Probably need to investigate more in the sales. Agree an expensive loo,ing coat is a great idea.

HarrietM87 · 31/03/2019 11:58

Has anyone got any trench coat recommendations? I’d like a smart but minimalist one for work. Zara would be my go to usually but the quality seems really bad this year. I’m back to work after mat leave so trying to find myself and style again after a year slouching in bf friendly clothes.

Hazeintheclouds · 31/03/2019 12:37

I have three camel coats: one double breasted and belted, one single, button-up and one a supposedly an Italian style and wrap-around. All are wool.
Agree that camel is classy and classic.

In addition:

a black wool
a navy wool with a velvet collar
a long grey wool herringbone by Cos
a black heavy felted wool by Cos
a subdued leopard print in a brilliant felty fabric

All winter/ autumn wear.

HaventGotAllDay · 31/03/2019 12:54

I want the soft trench coat that Suranne Jones wore in Dr Foster!
I have heard good things about Hobbs trenches but need to feel one! The one she wore looked really gorgeous. Often IMO they don't work because the beige is too light brown and not cream and the fabric looks cheap and crumply.

A colleague of similar age to me always looks so "put together". I think that's the secret. I don't think her clothes are expensive, often she'll just be in jeans or straight trousers but she'll have the perfect jewellery, little scarf (or big scarf) and bag etc. I tend to throw on the same necklace if at all no matter what. I imagine this woman has her outfits in her mind's eye iyswim? Sort of "the navy and purple scarf together with the navy cropped jumper" etc.

The one thing I think we talked about on the previous threads is patterns. The garish clashing splodgy colours are never going to look good no matter how much you've paid. Add in a cold shoulder and you've lost all hope.

DinosApple · 31/03/2019 13:16

I'm in too. I could do with more putting together.

I can't get on with a long trench coat, for whatever reason they just make me look matronly (probably the wrong combo of weight and height tbh). Beige doesn't suit me either.

My go to smart colour is navy, not that I've stuck to that for any of my coats which are almost all brights, bar my burgundy wool coat and a dark green I wear for work.

I'm trying to edge my way towards a few classics in my wardrobe which I think may help.

Petalflowers · 31/03/2019 13:22

That coat is gorgeous.

Elllllle · 31/03/2019 13:24

I loved these threads previously except that I can't help think ... "how to look expensive?" sounds a bit like what a prostitute might ask Grin

Does "expensive" really mean wealthy?

Morgan12 · 31/03/2019 13:35

I haven't a clue how to dress this time of year. Too hot for my winter coats and too cold for no coat.

What does everyone wear? Links would be appreciated if possible!

Crankybitch · 31/03/2019 14:22

I got that Ted Baker long wrap coat in camel but it’s now too warm to wear it

Need to find something to wear for spring - have a couple of Joules ones but think they are a bit casual

DameDoom · 31/03/2019 14:58

I love clothes and I love trying to look the best I can. My style is very pared down as that's what suits me best; however, I do aspire to be a Toast woman - IMO it's a classy look which only a certain type of woman can be and it looks best on your older, slightly posher types.

I tried to be Maxmara camel coat woman but looked like a cadaver but I do think a good coat makes an outfit and is well worth the investment. I buy good jeans and get them tailored - it's a bit of a faff but pays off.

DameDoom · 31/03/2019 15:01

My neighbour does head to toe Oska - she is 73 and totally nails the expensive lagenlook. She is just so chic it kills me.

Redandblue11 · 31/03/2019 18:10

Harriet I have the Saskia trench from Hobbs, in light camel. Is a great fit and giod quality. I really rate Hobbs for coats and trenches.
I had very good comments when wearing it too.

However, I just gogled and is out of stock apparently! But if you can look around and find one I would recommend it.

Redandblue11 · 31/03/2019 18:14

John Lewis has the Hobbs camel, here

lightningstrikes · 31/03/2019 18:26

Harriet I saw a lovely long trench today in COS. I have the Hobbs Saskia like Red, but did like the pared down look of the COS.
