Completely missed the ball with the previous thread so hope this thread is easy enough to find!

Yes - in the event it worked pretty well, that the law was changed to allow a girl to inherit but then a boy came along so it didn't upset the apple cart too much Wink (though of course one hopes that it will many decades before George gets close to the throne)

Of course the same rules should apply to the rest of the aristocracy (and then they can also change the law that says that a transwoman can keep the title but a transman can't inherit it over a male relative)

SenecaFalls · 25/01/2019 23:18

Wasn't the Princess Royal, Louise, Duchess of Fife in her own right?

No, but her daughter was. Louise's husband was Earl Fife elevated to Duke on his marriage. Their daughter Alexandra inherited the Dukedom by special remainder so she was Duchess of Fife in her own right.

Quantumblue · 25/01/2019 23:41

Surely the baby will be a girl called Lady Diana?

mathanxiety · 26/01/2019 04:52

LaurenOrdering I was 10 when they won Eurovision so have been a lifelong fan. My own DCs and all of their friends put up with CD after CD of Abba music in the car all their lives.

Clionba · 26/01/2019 05:00

I don't think Meghan and Harry would call their daughter Lady Diana - it's too potent. Maybe just as a middle name?

mathanxiety · 26/01/2019 06:09

Middle name is my guess too, even though Charlotte has it as her third name (Charlotte Elizabeth Diana).

I think if it’s a girl, Meghan will go for a feminist / suffragette type name.

Elizabeth has been used a lot amongst the granddaughters & great granddaughters:
Beatrice Elizabeth Mary
Zara Anne Elizabeth
Louise Alice Elizabeth Mary
Lena Elizabeth Tindall
Savannah Elizabeth Phillips

I think it’s a pretty safe bet Elizabeth will be in there as one of the middle names if Baby Sussex is a girl

Also re: Princess Charlotte ( Elizabeth Diana)
Elizabeth is also Kate’s middle name, and Charlotte is Pippa’s

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/01/2019 07:53

Earl Spencer's youngest is also Charlotte Diana.

Maybe Meghan will include her mum’s family name into the new baby’s list of names. It’s quite American to use surnames as forenames and Ragland would be a cool middle name; especially if it’s a boy.
( I don’t think we will be seeing Thomas anywhere in that list)

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/01/2019 07:54

Or Samantha!

Earl Spencer's youngest is also Charlotte Diana

I think that was a bit rich of him, as he wasn’t there for her in her life (not letting her live in an estate cottage; because of invasion of privacy); then profiting from her name & memory after her death.

He is a perfect example of banning primogeniture for the Aristocracy.
I wonder if William could put it in motion when he is King? He does detest his Uncle.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/01/2019 08:00

How about Lord Charles Phillip Ragland Mountbatten-Windsor, Earl of Dumbarton

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/01/2019 08:08

I really like Maud. It’s already been used by the Michael’s of Kent granddaughter, but she is so distantly related.

Maud Wood Park was also a 19th century American feminist Founder College Equal Suffrage League, first president League of Women Voters

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/01/2019 08:15

@CurlyWurlyTwirly I think Charles Spencer is a nasty piece of work. Apparently he cheated on his first wife and was emotionally abusive towards her. And yes, he's blatantly cashing in on Diana's name. I don't know what his relationship with William and Harry is like. He was at their weddings but that's neither here nor there.

George and Maud are in the same class at school.

CurlyWurlyTwirly · 26/01/2019 08:42

George and Maud are in the same class at school.

I did know that, but Maud is not that high profile; although she was a bridesmaid at Eugenie’s wedding, so probably popular in the family. I guess Lady Maud Mountbatten-Windsor and Miss Maud Windsor are a bit too close

I found a few random minor royal Instagram accounts. James Ogilvy (son of Princess Alexandra) has aged rather well, hasn't he?

Several MWs (Minor Windsors) feature in this post too.

QueenoftheAndals
I think Charles Spencer was not nice to his second wife too.
He and Diana were apparently very close as children as they were so upset by their parents separation and yet he visited great hurt/ upheaval on his spouses and children by being unfaithful.
You would think that someone who experienced it themselves would really try and prevent it happening to their dear children.

QueenOfTheAndals · 26/01/2019 09:06

Yes, he's on wife no 3 at the moment isn't he? I've seen interviews with Karen Spencer and she comes across as a strong woman who won't take any nonsense from a man. So in a way Charles has married his stepmother!

That photo of Diana with the swim team in Sydney! 80s fashion was truly tragic the decade that style forgot!

Clankboing · 26/01/2019 10:03

Daughter names for H&M my guesses are: Dorothy, Elizabeth (nn Betty), Alice, Eleanor or Maya. Possibly Alex. Son names: Alex, Richard, Robert, William, Henry.

The 80s "the decade that style forgot"
Those of us that came to maturity in the 80s said that of the 70s. No more skin tight crimplene, endless shades of brown, loon pants and platforms. Hello bright, clear colours, natural fabrics, court shoes, jackets and better lengths. It's all subjective, but I loved my 80s wardrobe!
