Is anyone going grey this year?

I've grew my colour out a few times over the years. The only thing that annoyed me was how patchy it looked, it's white at the front and sides, getting darker towards the back. I'm naturally dark brown.
It looked a bit daft (imho) because I had a very short pixie cut.
I decided to try to grow my layers longer and went dark from bleached platinum.
The last couple of days I've been bleaching again because Ive decided to see how my colour grows out and would prefer not to have the skunk line.
Whether I stick to it is another matter HmmGrin

Same. I'm scared!

ShakeYourTailFeathers · 03/01/2019 17:21

I've a grey pixie and I'm bored of it really quickly, I'm sad to say.

Bleached it a year ago to grow it out to see how grey I am (totally, as it turns out) and it's actually quite a nice colour. In fact a friend asked if i'd had highlights done.

But I feel a bit drab (early 40s) and have booked for a bleach again at month end.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2019 17:21

What colour are you now Skye?

These are from other times I grew it out. I wish I'd grew my hair instead of colouring again tbh.
Im very fond of a bleached pixie though.

Meeeee, I took the plunge last year, from long and copper to very short and grey/ white.
I’ve got a pixie cut that is ash grey at the roots and then getting lighter towards the ends which are silver white. I absolutely love it.

Trippedupagain · 03/01/2019 17:35

Interesting thread for me - I've been considering letting my hair just grow out and see how it looks. I'm worried it will be really ageing, although when I see other people with natural grey / silver hair I don't really think it makes them look old. I think it's how it's cut that makes the difference.

BestIsWest · 03/01/2019 17:42

I’m interested too. Got a mid brown pixie right now but had a bit of a funny reaction in the hairdressers a little while ago. They were concerned it might be the dye and have since done a patch test and touched up the roots for me but I am a bit nervous about dying it now.

Trouble is I have no idea what colour it really is underneath. I think there’s a fair bit of white at the front but I haven’t seen my natural colour since DS was born and he’s 21 next month.

I’m also worried about feeling drab.

BestIsWest · 03/01/2019 17:43

Yours looks lovely cocolepew

Cocolepew · 03/01/2019 17:47

Thanks Best.
I cut and dye my own hair and just can't be bothered now!
The natural colour definitely suits my colouring now, it make my skin look much nicer.

Yours sounds lovely Wine.
I work with a woman with natural pure white hair, its about shoulder length and she's put a yellow blonde in and it's awful. It actually ages her, its too harsh next to her skin.
I was madly jealous of her natural colour.

Mine looks very similar to your first picture @Cocolepew, since I got it done I’ve had sooo many fab comments and it helps having roots that blend in with the grey now and aren’t a big stripe against the copper red!

jeaux90 · 03/01/2019 20:05

I'm going through a process to start embracing my grey. I just spent 4 hours at the hairdressers. I used to have full light brown tint but can't stand the root situation so just had full head of very cool/cream highlights so I can start growing my natural colour out and use it as part of my look. I have long hair.

I'm not ready to go full on grey as it too salt and pepper. (47)

EraOfTheGrey · 03/01/2019 20:06

I cut out all my dyed hair 16 months ago and I can happily say that I love the colour it is now. I've found that I can now wear less makeup to liven me up. The canvas is blank so any additional colour has a bigger impact. I do get told that my skin looks good and I put this down to my hair colour suiting me better.

The change was quite a shock at first because I went from high contrast, dark brunette hair and dark eyebrows, to low contrast white/silver hair with dark eyebrows. My eyebrows are resistant to ageing it seems.
Strange thing is I don't look nearly as pale now.

Coco I do love the sparkle your hair has. You're lucky that you have a bright white. Like you my natural hair colour was dark ashy brown.

CoatTails · 03/01/2019 20:13

My hair is short and I went grey a couple of years ago. I’m late 40s.
I bloody love it, and I love not thinking about regrowth and dye anymore!
Have a look at the Facebook group ‘Going Gorgeously Gray’ for some inspiration.

Do you cut your own hair when you have a pixie cut, Coco? Can I ask how you do it? I especially like the style in your third pic, with the very short sides and slightly longer top.

I have a short pixie and stopped dying it a couple of years ago. It's quite salt and pepper now and I really like it - I think it adds texture and interest to a short style.

Cocolepew · 03/01/2019 20:31

That's lovely coats.
My eyebrows are still black too era, I was worried about looking like Alister Darling.
My bleaching hasn't lifted my hair as much as I'd like but I need to leave it a few weeks or dye it silver.

This is with a silver dye in it from a few years ago

Yes I haven't been to a hairdressers in 17 years Florence.
The very short back and sides were done with clippers, I usually just cut into my hair to get texture.
I'm quite cavalier!

That's what mine looks like silver Coco. I loved it.

ElfrideSwancourt · 03/01/2019 21:24

I'm growing out my grey - have been dyeing it for about 25 years, the last few years I've been dyeing it blonde rather than my natural black but I was getting fed up with the bits that would only go red rather than blonde so I bit the bullet and haven't bleached since the summer.

I'm currently colouring the bleached hair purple with a semi-permanent colour and the regrowth isn't too obvious. Also I don't really care which is quite liberating!

My hair was already in a bob, but I got it cut quite a lot shorter but am planning to grow it longer when the bleach is gone.

Knowivedonewrong · 03/01/2019 21:25

I've gone grey. Removed the dark colour, had it cut short.
Then started to grow it out in Nov 17.
Now I'm grey all over. Much prefer it now. Will never go back to colouring my hair again.

WinterWendy · 03/01/2019 21:35

I've been giving it serious consideration for a year or so now. My hair is very dark brown and I've been having a semi-permanent colour on my roots for a few years to blend in the white hairs. I recently went a little lighter so the white hairs are not totally covered but the demarcation line is still quite obvious to me and I'm lightly using a spray root cover to blend in a bit. I last had a colour 8 weeks ago and I'm wondering about stopping - it's not going to get any easier to in future as the contrast is only going to get worse.

My hair is cut in an inverted bob but I've not had it trimmed for over 3 months now so it's almost shoulder length. The ends have gone quite coppery which is so not the right colour for me - I need cool tones.

I'm kind of paralysed at the moment over what to do. I'm thinking of going for some layers so I can get rid of the coppery bits. I'm not brave enough to go for a pixie!

Fatted · 03/01/2019 21:42

I keep threatening to grow my hair out. I'm naturally very dark and have been continuing to dye it dark brown. I have really white/grey roots in patches. But on the top of my head, where my parting is, is still growing in quite dark. I think I'll still be quite dark salt and pepper. I also have curly hair that I think looks terrible grey but I CBA straightening it constantly ATM. I'm also overweight right now and feel like I'd just look like I'd let myself go if I didn't colour my hair.

I'm 40 in 18 months and I've said to myself I'd stop colouring my hair then.

poppym12 · 03/01/2019 22:29

I'm thinking about it. I last had a colour & cut at the end of August. I've used a couple of semi permanent colours on it since then but they wash out very quickly for me. I trimmed it myself just before Christmas.

I love the colour of the roots but I don't know whether to keep going as I have really gone off the colour it was. Short hair doesn't suit me though so that option is out, and it's doing some lovely menopausal thinning at the front Angry

Actually, it looks like a bag of shite and I think I'm starting to detest the hair I was once very happy with.

Cocolepew · 04/01/2019 12:14

Urgh, I'm not happy with the colour its gone, I'm tempted to cut it Hmm which isn't in my hair plan for this year Grin
I just can't seem to leave it alone Blush
