Is anyone going grey this year?

I've grew my colour out a few times over the years. The only thing that annoyed me was how patchy it looked, it's white at the front and sides, getting darker towards the back. I'm naturally dark brown.
It looked a bit daft (imho) because I had a very short pixie cut.
I decided to try to grow my layers longer and went dark from bleached platinum.
The last couple of days I've been bleaching again because Ive decided to see how my colour grows out and would prefer not to have the skunk line.
Whether I stick to it is another matter HmmGrin

You are my hair crush Coco Blush

Salt and pepper pixie cut here; it's usually short all over but I'm trying to get some length on the top just for a change but not sure I like it. I think it makes me look old-ladyish.

I keep talking about going blonde but the upkeep cost (on top of a 4-5 weekly cut) is too much at the moment. Can I ask what your bleaching/toning routine is please?

Cocolepew · 04/01/2019 12:22

Right I've joined 3 fb groups for inspiration.

Haha you wouldn't say that if you saw it atm Chip, I look like tweety pie Grin thank you though.
I just throw a lot of bleach at it and hope it doesn't fall out. When it's pale enough I put a pearly white in it gives it a lovely sheen.
I have also been able to tone it down using a silver dye, it goes more white but managed to dye my hair blue last time I tried this.

Mine in the summer, and the gorgeous JLC.

That's lovely Chip, love the cut too.
I wish my grey was more through my hair like yours, rather than blocks of different colours.

Just chipping in, I'm 31 and I don't dye my hair at all. I know more women around my age who are choosing to go grey than choosing to dye their hair. New trend perhaps?

Men can go grey right away, why can't women?

SuzeD29 · 04/01/2019 12:46

I quit dying my hair exactly 1 year ago and for the most part of it I'm happy with my decision. I've just turned 30 and was sick of the bleach and dying time and price not to mention how much it was ruining my hair. I'm about 50% grey

Sturmundcalm · 04/01/2019 13:23

not properly but i have started to let a section of white grow out at the front - and it's starting to become properly noticeable now (about 4 months in and i have shoulder length curly dark blonde hair).

will keep going with that for now and may consider doing something more in the summer. problem is that the grey is more wiry and mine is a real mix of white/grey/salt and pepper... and with the curls i can't pull off a pixie cut!

GoldenSyrupLion · 04/01/2019 13:27

It's my long term plan, but the colour is too patchy at the moment. I'm not keen on the gunmetal effect. Too harsh for my sallow olive skin tone.

Whatsnewwithyou · 04/01/2019 13:30

I'm thinking about it. I'm mid-40s and currently have dyed-brown hair with a stripe of grey roots that have grown out. I love the platinum-grey pixie cut look (and everyone has looked lovely in the photos on this thread!) but it would definitely not suit me as I have pale skin and look awful with short hair for some reason- I think because of my weak chin 😳

Trippedupagain · 04/01/2019 13:50

This is inspiring me! It's very bold to go as short as some of you lovelies have done but looks really lovely I have to say. I've had short hair in the past, so just have to grow a bit more out. It's difficult to tell what it will be like until you do it, isn't it? I've tried to have a look at my roots by contorting in front of the mirror and some original hair colour seems to still be there, but mixed in with white / grey. The over all effect might be okay, or might not...but bleaching my hair for so many years can't be good for it so I'm very tempted!

DustyMaiden · 04/01/2019 13:56

I would love to bored of dyeing and paying for it. My hair is mostly dark apart from the front I look like Cruella Deville’s pet skunk.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2019 13:58

I was on the Head-shave to go grey thread last year. I saw it through and am now my natural colour. Thankfully it is really nice. I have a lot of blonde mixed with the grey and people often don't believe that I don't colour it.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2019 14:04

Here is a very bad selfie side view of mine right now. I am age 56 for context.

Sturmundcalm · 04/01/2019 14:05

do you have any pics @ApolloandDaphne?

have contemplated shaving it all off in the past but not sure I could carry off the bald/really short phase and i have a job where people pay attention to how i look Hmm

Sturmundcalm · 04/01/2019 14:06

cross post!

yours looks lovely - i already know mine is much whiter than that at the front...

Trippedupagain · 04/01/2019 14:40

ApollandDaphne wow, a head shave - now that is brave! I'm being a total wimp about this whole thing, I can see that.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/01/2019 15:01

I didn't do a head shave! Whoever began the thread did.

Trippedupagain · 04/01/2019 15:50

Ah okay, with you now - missed that thread last year!

HappyKatieA · 04/01/2019 16:12

I've been dye free since my birthday at the end of May 2018.
I'm a dark brunette, but have been dying it various chocolate /copper / reds for many years.
I got to the stage where I noticed the greys within days of dyeing, so I decided to go for it. For the most part it's been quite liberating, but it does attract unwanted attention at times.
So, now, I'm about 7 months in, and mostly it's ok. The last few days I've been itching to dye again, but I think I just need a good haircut/trim.
I follow a hashtag on Insta called #grombre which I find helps, so many different styles, colours, ages etc.
I'm hoping that by the time I've done a year I can have a short bob style with just my natural colour, which is quite white at the front, but salt and pepper throughout the rest (I think).
It has surprised my how white some of my hair is!

doctorboo · 04/01/2019 16:44

Hey @Cocolepew ! Funnily enough I was wondering the other day how you’re doing hair-wise.

I’m now 99% dye free, if I went super short, like 2/3” long it’d be completely dye-free. I’m trying to stay colour free, but do feel a bit drab! I’ll see if I can find a recent pic.

Whatsnewwithyou · 04/01/2019 16:45

What kind of unwanted attention did it attract, @HappyKatieA?

I want to go grey but I'm worried about looking disheveled and unprofessional during the process of growing it out. Is there anything a hairdresser can do to ease the process for those with brown hair going silver grey? Balayage or something?

HappyKatieA · 04/01/2019 16:53

@Whatsnewwithyou the comments come from other women (some friends, some colleagues) who think I should keep dyeing, or question my reasons for not.
I'm used to people commenting on my clothing, because I always make an effort and enjoy clothes. But these comments are unwanted, such as 'are you really going to go grey, why?' Almost as if something is wrong with me, with a sad look on their faces. Not often, but often enough that it needles me slightly.
I know I don't look my usual self (hair wise) as I have an obvious demarcation line (there are ways Hairdresser's can cover this, but I chose to go cold turkey). I'm still making an effort, but now the line is 2-3" down my head, currently I have a shoulder length blunt cut bob, so it shows.
I'll not change my mind because of the comments, but it is something I've noticed and wasn't prepared for.

JohnWolfenstein · 04/01/2019 17:09

I am considering a grey/silver dye. I get blonde highlights anyway, but the greys are getting more prominent and showing more quickly now. Trouble is the grey is still very sporadic and I kind of feel it would be better to just dye it grey and have done with it.

This isn't my hair, but style is similar. I had planned to grow it, but CBA. What do you guys think of it? I'm just (literally yesterday) 40.
