LADDM is amazing Mrsr8, you have inspired me to dig my sample out (I have been rationing it).

SOTD MIu Miu. Dreaming of spring.

Lovely day in Geranium Bourbon thanks to Calm Flowers. This is fabulous; a rose/geranium with a warm deep boozy underbelly. Not similar to either Fire or Firedance, but there are some parallels between all three (spicy rose with rich amber heat).

It’s a pleasure, MrsLucas, I’m pleased you’re enjoying the Geranium Bourbon. It was an Ebay bargain that came without a box, but I have found a classy home for it in a silk pouch.

I have spent the last few days on Tauer samples. Sotto la Luna Tuberose has the buttery swoony tuberose of Madonna Truth or Dare (or Fracas) but also the dustiness of the tuberose in L’Artisan’s Nuit de Tubereuse. It’s also beautifully spicy and ridiculously long-lasting.

I also tried Au Coeur du Desert. It has great similarities to LADDM but is warmer and sweeter. I think I prefer it. It got me a compliment today from a friend. Usually nobody notices my perfume unless I stick my wrist under DH’s nose!

I haven’t tried Incense Extreme, but I do have a bottle of Incense Rose, which is beautiful.

Kalifornia, I love Katie Puckrik’s reviews! I think she stopped doing them a while ago, though. I have quite a few cheap perfumes. My favourite is Sarah Jessica Parker’s Covet.

Ooh Geranium Bourbon - that sounds lovely.

have just ordered a large sample of Fleur Oriental and I HAVE A FEELING ABOUT THIS ONE BEING THE ONE...

OneNightTimeMenaceStrikesBack · 17/01/2019 12:35

SOTD is Covet -SJP, very nice, spicy yet sweet, chocolately without being pure gourmand. not sure if that's lavender i pick up somewhere int he background as well

CountFosco · 17/01/2019 12:57

SotD Bois Naufrage, Christmas pressie from DH (he may have been told what to buy!). Green figgy heaven, glad he bought 100ml because I can see this being used a lot. Can't stop sniffing myself.

Now googling SJP Covet, it's a bit of a bargain so I might stretch to a blind buy!

Well done to MrCount; I do like a man who can follow guidance! And it sounds lovely.

Thank you a little bit to the helpful person who mentioned Sidmouth. It's not very far away and I am feeling a magnetic attraction. Danger signs.

SoTD is Fire. Every time I get it out I remember the discussion about the huge cannonball bottle tops.

CountFosco · 17/01/2019 17:47

We've been together a very long time. He tried going off list when he was young and foolish but knows better these days!

Love Fire (jealous of Fennel's stockpile, I've only got 50ml), my kids comment on those lids whenever I wear a MG perfume.

Hello nice friendly and very knowledgeable people!

I was alerted to this thread by the lovely XingMing.

Having never worn perfume I have decided that this year is the one to choose one (or possibly a few more than one). So I bought myself the set of samples from Papillon as a birthday present; Salome and Anubis definitely not for me, but I really like Dryad. However Mr Maitland - who does have to live with a scent, after all, and generally has a better sense of smell than I do - says it isn't quite me...so my question is, does anyone have any ideas as to what else should I try, in the Dryad vein, but that might be just a bit sharper or more botanical? Any suggestions much appreciated!

Catherine, if you would like some samples to try out, some very random, send me a PM including an address, and I'll do my best to find things you might like. I have a few Blush and the general principle here is that you say yes, and then send anything left over to other newbies. It's a bit hit and miss but it gives everyone a chance to sniff new stuff that is not just mainstream.

Judystilldreamsofhorses · 17/01/2019 20:51

SOTD Byredo Gypsy Water, for a snowy Thursday.

UnnecessaryFennel · 17/01/2019 20:55

That's a divine Xmas present count, well done indeed MrCount!

Catherine how about the original Miss Dior (not the travesty available on most perfume counters these days) or perhaps Clinique Aromatics Elixir (a bit of a Marmite scent but many really good chypres are!)

Vol de Nuit by Guerlain or Jacomo Silences both also have a lot of similar notes.

Cattus · 17/01/2019 21:02

Perfume people, please can you help me analyse why I dislike these perfumes.

I had never had any particularly adverse reactions to perfumes until a few years ago when I tried Baccarat Rouge by Maison F Kurkdijan. When I first tried it I thought this is it, this the perfume I’ve been looking for: it’s perfect. I sprayed it on my neck and it went all over my scarf.

The next morning I put my scarf on and I felt knocked out and disgusted by the smell. It was like eggy sugar and something else I can’t describe. If I hadn’t taken the scarf off, I’d have vomited. I also tried one of the Diptyque perfumes and had a similar reaction along with a horrendous kind of burning chemical smell.

Since then, if In in somewhere like Selfridges, I find it hard to walk through the perfume section because of the wafts of these sorts of smells.

From what I can tell, I get this reaction from all the more expensive perfumes, the ones over 150. If I was in Debenhams passing Estée Lauder, Clinique, Chanel and so on I would have no reaction.

So what chemical is doing this to me, so I can avoid it? Also, I used to laugh at the Lush cosmetics shop, but now the smell coming from there is a blessed relief compared to Selfridges.

Cattus · 17/01/2019 21:03

Oh and by the way, the only perfume I wear consistently is Aromatics Elixir.

CountFosco · 17/01/2019 22:22

Catherine Dryad is just about favourite perfume. It's a green chypre and very old fashioned (in a good way). Lots of galbanum. How about a chypre sample set?

Alternatively, you could try a green sample set, we did a Big Sniff of this set last year, there's no chypres as I can remember but lots of bright greens that you might like.

Basically just give up on finding 'the one' and keep trying more and more and more.
