Made sure my autocorrect didn't spoil that title...

As always, let's keep it light and avoid any spite!

They can't show cleavage? Clearly Princess Margaret missed that memo!

I always wonder about the sources of articles like that. I'm not sure they're reliable as I think half of what's written is fiction. The rules around entering rooms and curtsying etc are real, but claims about food the Queen never eats (potatoes apparently) make me wonder where they get their information from.

Apparently HM herself told Michelle Obama that some of the alleged rules are all rubbish!

They bow or curtsey to the Queen. For the rest, it's about orders of precedence. This I got from the Paul Burrell and Ken Wharfe books. Burrell said that the older gentlemen sometimes bowed to all the ladies, but that's old fashioned courtesy.
Who knows? Those books may be wrong, but Burrell goes into such detail and clearly loves it all.

katekat383 · 16/12/2018 17:51

To think Harry and Meghan’s photo is odd looking?!250Show OP

Have searched but perhaps the children in make up post is one of those deleted. Lol

I commented on it though so it did exist and I was not imagining it!

PawneeParksDept · 16/12/2018 17:51

But there was the whole hoo ha that Princess Anne got the mad hump that she might be expected to curtsey to Camilla and the rule about curtseying to the "Blood Princesses" came about and this was resurrected again about B and E and Kate and the fact that Kate HAS to curtsey to them (and thus Meghan also) even though they outrank the York's because they are blood royal

SenecaFalls · 16/12/2018 17:52

Then why the copious articles about who curtseys to who?

They are wrong, and they seem to be using each other as source material.

SenecaFalls · 16/12/2018 17:54

That business about Camilla and Anne was about precedence, not curtsying.

Clionba · 16/12/2018 17:55

As Seneca says, the articles refer to precedence. They are wrong about the curtseys because they don't go to original source material.

katekat383 · 16/12/2018 17:58

William and Kate’s card is staged to a ridiculous point. Even the kids have make up on, it’s so obvious.Harry’s and Meghan’s was just a wedding photo that they used from the day and I think more special as a result, even if Harry has ruined it a bit lol.

The above is the post about the children in makeup. I have omitted the poster’s username...

katekat383 · 16/12/2018 18:01

Bea and Eugenie should pop out at regular intervals and DEMAND curtsies! Wink

SenecaFalls · 16/12/2018 18:05

Not royal, but a good example of the power of fashion to ignite the public imagination; this article is just one example of many that are appearing in US media about the coat Nancy Pelosi wore when she met with the president and stood up to him in a major way. The coat is several years old, and the designer is bringing it back due to the publicity. Overnight, it has become a symbol of speaking truth to power, and most particularly of a woman speaking truth to a man in power.

@QueenOfTheAndals Thanks Smile

BlingLoving · 16/12/2018 18:27

this was interesting I thought.

ElspethFlashman · 16/12/2018 18:28

All these rules are made up - no nail polish other than nude (rubbish), no bare shoulders (rubbish), no cleavage (rubbish), no trousers (rubbish), no open toed shoes (rubbish).

It's all bollocks really, isn't it? The slightest Google search would see examples of all of the above in previous generations.

It may be that an outfit isn't entirely appropriate for an occasion (not wearing black on Remembrance Sunday would raise eyebrows) but I don't think there's an actual rule. I suspect the only rule is "have some fucking cop on as to the tone of the occasion"

QueenOfTheAndals · 16/12/2018 18:31

Great article @BlingLoving, says it all really.

So if the 'rules' on curtsying are as reported does Kate have to curtsy to William as he is above her in rank? Would make the 4am feeds a pain wouldn't it Wink (yes I know they have nannies! No none of us know who does the night feeds I was making a point). It seems unlikely to me that the younger royals bow and curtsy when they see each other wether the do with the older generation I can't see how we would know for sure. I'm not saying the rules aren there I'm saying they probably aren't followed.

Good article Bling so much speculation about rules normally used to beat down who the press are anti at that time just reporting the facts would be great wouldn't it.

Laiste · 16/12/2018 18:54

''Clionba - the older gentlemen sometimes bowed to all the ladies, but that's old fashioned courtesy.''

Your post has jogged a memory. My DM's friend's husband always used to jump up (well, struggle up - he was elderly) out of his chair and stand whenever a woman walked into the room for the first time, and until she sat down or left the room again.

I always found it slightly disconcerting, but somehow charming :) He has sadly passed away now. It's unlikely that me or my DDs will see that being done again.

Becles · 16/12/2018 19:03

@BlingLoving good article and page. Thank you

PawneeParksDept · 16/12/2018 19:12

Yes very good article

Clionba · 16/12/2018 19:18

That's interesting, Laiste. I come across that, occasionally! I suspect that the Duke of Kent and Prince Michael would always stand if a lady got up! They're of that background and generation.

Clionba · 16/12/2018 19:24

Very interesting article, thanks. I do wish reporters would read this!!

Spudlet · 16/12/2018 19:37

Great article, Bling.

I keep looking at the Cambridge's Christmas card and just itching to book a family photography session. Not for a card, but just to have a nice photo of our family - I only have phone snaps, or ones I've taken so of course I'm never in them! It's such a lovely, happy picture of them all, I just really like it.

BlingLoving · 16/12/2018 19:46

Oh god. Thomas Markle is going to be on ITV - Good Morning Britain with Piers tomorrow......

SenecaFalls · 16/12/2018 19:50

Great article. Flowers Crown

PawneeParksDept · 16/12/2018 19:53

God I do wish he would stop.

He must absolutely hate her and have no desire to see that child

Because if the reverse is true as he claims then he is going as badly about it as possible

Clionba · 16/12/2018 19:53

BlingLoving I've seen him on that programme at least twice already. This is not ever going to go away.

SenecaFalls · 16/12/2018 19:55

That standing for a woman is still the norm in many settings here in the Southern US. As a feminist, I really think it needs to go, but I don't labor the point. But, for example, you do have to be prepared if you approach men seated at a table in a restaurant to say "Please, don't get up." Nine times out of ten they will, anyway.
