What is the secret to looking glam??!

So, growing up I've always admired glam old ladies. And thought- I want to be a glam old lady. Now I'm middle aged and, without fail, look like a dishevelled wreck at the end of each work day.

So what's the secret? What are the ingredients? I'd have thought:
Nice shoes and handbag... earrings, beads or scarf.... good haircut.... make up. But it's not working! Need hair tips and make up tips. Is it lippy? Is that the key?!

Who's got it sussed and can shed any light?

Sleek is the adjective that defines glamorous for me. You can be any or all kinds of stylish, but glamour has a sleek, well-fed, cat-that-got-the-cream dimension.

There is something about ‘glam’ that takes what could be elegant into brassy. Overly shimmering make-up, fake accessories and big, poofy hair. Fake tan/nails too...

Jk Rowling can look elegant but can tip into ‘glam’ on occasion.

The first person who came to mind when I thought what’s glam is this one.

I too think being skinny is irrelevant. In fact I think some glamorous women look better heavier e.g. Nigella Lawson and Monica Belluci.

Monica Belluci does not look overweight (look at her tiny waist) so I don't think she's an example of 'heavy' women being glam. I'd guess she has a BMI of 22-23 so heavier than the average anorexic teenage model but slimmer by far than the average woman and in the middle of the healthy range.

Monica Bellucci is in no way heavy I agree. She's a slim natural hourglass. Like Marilyn M. It's possible to have mad (natural) curves and be slender!

I don't think MonicaB is overweight. I've seen her in pictures where she has gone really skinny and then in pictures where she looks voluptuous. I think she looks better like this.

I don't think skinny = great. I am 1.5 stone overweight and when I slim down to my goal weight/BMI of 24-25 I am often told I looked better with a bit of meat on me.

Her weight may fluctuate, but Monica Bellucci has put on significant weight in recent years.

She's a beautiful woman and it helps that she's tall and curvy. But here she does look heavy:

Weight gain in middle age can be caused by thyroid problems or medication so I don’t think every woman who is a bit “heavy” has just let herself go. This type of weight gain is almost impossible to lose as well. Kinda Evangelista was very slim when younger but has said she struggled with her thyroid as she got older and the exhaustion. It’s not as simple as over indulging.

Distance I think she looks lovely and very shapely. She is carrying more weight but she fills out on bust, hips, thighs and bottom. Looks proportional rather than those that are Apple shaped and gain it in tummy. She can carry it can't she.

I would be happy to look as good as MB! Only in a fashion universe is she heavy. She is an entirely normal gorgeous 50-something women, who is working at her appearance.

Oh, I absolutely agree that Monica Bellucci looks lovely. But she is indisputably on the heavier side, at least in that picture. And there's nothing wrong with that (and indeed her shape helps a lot).

Oh yeah can see she's a bit bigger now. I was remembering old photos or the Dolce campaign. Still beautiful though.

I think good jewellery is often overlooked. To look expensive or glam you need good diamonds!

I think she's a bit smaller than that, my workmate is the same height and a size 10 and is slimmer but not outrageously so. I would guess a size 12 and at the top end of the healthy BMI range, her arms are still very slim. I agree her waist looks like it has thickened in comparison to her younger photos but how much of that is historic photoshop, on her instagram in some photos her waist looks tiny, in others a more normal ratio. Agree the videos are the best way to tell though.

This could be because people are used to the heavy you and have a warped sense of what's a healthy size. I'm short and a size 10 (or 12 in old money) at a similar BMI so nowhere near too thin but have been told the same.

I still think she looks a 14/16 from watching her in runway. She looks similar to Nigella Lawson in build.

I think to be elegant as you age is wonderful. Plain well cut clothes etc but the biggest un glam thing to me is BEIGE! It's the most dreadful draining non colour colour there is as we age. When you have beige hair and a beige cardy you can never be anything other than beige yourself. The women I admire are all either silver haired or have a great colour job . Wear plain simple well cut clothes in any of the other neutrals out there. Charcoal Navy White and some of the clear brights like a good Pink Red or Blue .
