What is the secret to looking glam??!

Lighthearted

So, growing up I've always admired glam old ladies. And thought- I want to be a glam old lady. Now I'm middle aged and, without fail, look like a dishevelled wreck at the end of each work day.

So what's the secret? What are the ingredients? I'd have thought:
Nice shoes and handbag... earrings, beads or scarf.... good haircut.... make up. But it's not working! Need hair tips and make up tips. Is it lippy? Is that the key?!

Who's got it sussed and can shed any light?

Going to the cinema in the 1950's

What is the secret to looking glam??!
XingMing · 15/12/2018 20:07

I do two or three Pilates classes a week, and walk five days out of seven with a young fit dog whatever the weather. I look, at 62, somewhere between weather batten and fit. I like feeling strong but I am thinking forward too, to the time I see my DMIL at when I don't know what I feel , but hate all of it. I fervently hope I am years away, but seeing it happen to her makes me feel frail.

TheChristmasBear · 16/12/2018 00:22

Yeah, her body has changed a bit in her fifties.

Here’s another radical transformation for you.

A thread about being glamorous and elegant has partially morphed into the spiteful fat shaming of a beautiful woman.

DistanceCall · 16/12/2018 01:42

Sorry, who is being fat shamed here? I think everyone is saying that Monica Bellucci looks great regardless of the fact that now she is heavier which she used to be.

OrigamiZoo · 16/12/2018 01:46

@NocturneGmajor

Owning your own style is glam to me

This in spades1

DistanceCall · 16/12/2018 01:48

heavier which she used to be.

THAN she used to be.

Milliy · 16/12/2018 12:11

TheChristmasBear no one is fat shaming. We are saying that even though she looks bigger now she has a fantastic shape and still looks voluptuous and lovely. She is same body shape, age and size as me and I find her amazing

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 16:06

There's a lady I know/see every day for school run etc and she is very glam in a casual way... expensive I guess the other threads would describe it as. She's very casual compared to others described here...

Not skinny/quite plump...prob about an 18?
Casual dresses...think Breton type dresses and biker boots
Skinny jeans or kind of 'relaxed skinny' types
Adidas superstars type trainers
Very short shaggy pixie type hair
Understated make up, neat brows & skin
Short but neat gel type nails
Navy pea coat type coat
Big scarves

So quite casual really, but she always looks put together if that makes sense? Doesn't seem to follow trends per se. Not that I watch her or anything 😂🤦

Neverunderfed · 16/12/2018 16:11

This lady does have great skin and bone structure though, so 'good breeding' as my old granny would say. 😂

Girlsnightin · 16/12/2018 19:12

A few of the 20 and 30 year olds at work call me 'glam'. I'm trying to work out that actually means!!??!!
I hoping it's groomed and stylish (That is my aim)
Christ hope they don't mean something else!

SilkenTofu · 16/12/2018 19:24

One thing I don't want is to look glam in a drag kind of way. Joan Collins and Crystal Carrington are not the look I am going for.

Floisme · 16/12/2018 20:21
Shock I adore Joan Collins. How very dare you. But I'm with you regarding Crystal.
OldJoseph · 16/12/2018 20:42

I don't think it will ever be me sadly, even at my best...no elegant woman I see on TV or in real life ever needs to wipe her nose with a hankie several times a day.

They are cotton ironed hankies but nevertheless nose wiping is not an expensive / edgy / cool / glam -chose your adjective-look.

SilkenTofu · 17/12/2018 10:01

I love Joan too. I just don't like her look. I once knew a girl at Uni who IMO was pretty stunning. Titian hair, brown eyes. lovely skin, very natural and super sporty.

She invited me round to her house one day. I walked in and met her mum and I was Shock. Her mum was as glammed up as Joan Collins in high heeled slippers and full makeup. She was also pretty stunning and had lovely dark hair in a just left hairdressers and had a blow dry way. My friend looked embarrassed. I reckon her mum as always on her back about dressing nicely and having a full makeover.

Floisme · 17/12/2018 10:13

Oh Joan isn't my own style at all - I am far too lazy. I just think she's fab.

buggerthebotox · 17/12/2018 10:15

Joanie's my "glam" icon!

I'm older and referred to as glam. I'm always in full slap, but I dress casually (ie no high heels or dresses).

My nails are always done, my hair is styled in a way that if it gets wet, it goes back to where it was, and i'm NEVER without slap.

I think I probably put a lot of pressure on myself to look a certain way. I was brought up by a mother who was obsessed with looks (not just mine) and I think it rubbed off on me. I became very insecure about my looks and always felt under pressure to look my best.

I can't break the habit now....

kateandme · 17/12/2018 16:47

I know I will sound blah blah yeh yeh yeh.but I also think you have to feel it too.from the inside you have to no you can rock it!
those glam ladies.dont give a fuck and live and love themselves to the fullest and it just sparkles out of them

CupsAndPentacles · 17/12/2018 16:49

I always bought anything forties anytime I saw it after ''good night sweetheart'' I loved Dervla Kirvan's character's clothes in Good night sweetheart, and also, although I nEVER tried to copy her, I love love Margot Ledbetter's style!

JaneJeffer · 17/12/2018 17:01

I love Margot as well. She's got the height to carry off all those billowing clothes. I would get caught in a door.

ja9r · 17/12/2018 22:13

@buggerthebotox Thanks for your honest post.

But I must ask:

my hair is styled in a way that if it gets wet, it goes back to where it was,

How do you do that?!

OP posts:
CupsAndPentacles · 17/12/2018 23:04

yes, @janejeffer, those patterns would drown me, but she was amazing. Love her look.

Years ago wearing cullotes, I did with my left foot step in to the billowing leg of the right culotte and nearly killed myself. In public too! Margot wouldn't have done that.

OrangeJellySpread · 18/12/2018 00:59

Great skin, great hair, great figure.
If you lack great figure, then + fitting clothes, not tight.

user1457017537 · 18/12/2018 10:11

Cupsandpentacles I did exactly the same in boyfriend jeans and cork wedges, and broke my elbow! The pain .......

CupsAndPentacles · 18/12/2018 16:13

Oooh. They are lethal! And no warning labels! We were both lucky to escape with our lives!

Tighnabruaich · 18/12/2018 16:39

I'm pretty old but get told I'm 'glamorous' and in fact was called that this morning by a colleague! I just do what I've always done, but the main difference is I stopped dyeing my hair, and underneath the dark brown was a glorious silver/platinum colour. Too-dark dyed hair can be very ageing, but so can certain shades of grey.
The other thing that comes with middle age is a sort of fading away of the colours in your face, so I always make sure I have a strong lipstick, eyeliner, mascara and most, most, most importantly - good brows! Then, I wear mostly block colours - all black, all navy, with chunky silver jewellery. I always think once you get past a certain age you have to avoid beige like the plague. Having said all that - I'd rather be a lovely 30 year old than a 'glam' silver fox any day, but that's not going to happen, so I just have to make the most of it.!
