What is the secret to looking glam??!

Lighthearted

So, growing up I've always admired glam old ladies. And thought- I want to be a glam old lady. Now I'm middle aged and, without fail, look like a dishevelled wreck at the end of each work day.

So what's the secret? What are the ingredients? I'd have thought:
Nice shoes and handbag... earrings, beads or scarf.... good haircut.... make up. But it's not working! Need hair tips and make up tips. Is it lippy? Is that the key?!

Who's got it sussed and can shed any light?

Bold lip and nails done

When I read your title I thought 'who wants to be glam?' and reading some of the replies I still feel like that. You can spend money on yourself without painting yourself. To me, my hippy lesbian SIL is glam because she has a mallen streak which I always think looks so sophisticated.

Anyway, I agree that spending money on yourself helps but I say do that by eating well, keeping fit, maintaining a healthy weight, having a good haircut, buying beautiful (comfortable flat) shoes and fashionable clothes in natural materials. Wear expensive perfume and jewellery. Be good to yourself and true to yourself.

Don't forget your poodle.

What is the secret to looking glam??!
TheFairyAstronaut · 13/12/2018 01:03

Skin, hair and nails that look like you get enough vitamins and nutrients from your diet.

Petitprince · 13/12/2018 01:13

Dry shampoo stops any limpness. I wash my hair twice a week now and get loads more compliments innit than when I washed it daily. More volume too.

recently · 13/12/2018 06:35

Dry shampoo doesn't work for everyone though. I have to wash every day and it still looks limp.

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 13/12/2018 06:45

AhoyDelBoy nailed it for me. And can spell it.

theredjellybean · 13/12/2018 07:23

@ja9r..silver vixen glam I think definitely takes thought and practise. It is getting the right shade of hair colour and a really good cut/shape.

I also don't find lots of colour on more mature people particularly glam, but that's my choice and my style is quite Conservative so I favour classic over fashion.
Someone up post said its about spending lots of money, while I'd agree maintenance on hair is pricey, it's costs little to look after your clothes properly and to keep fit and toned. But its certainly easier with older vhildren.

Money, money is the secret ingredient!

shiveringtimber · 13/12/2018 08:00

Clean, well-cut hair, tidy nails/hands, minimum makeup during the day, good quality clothing and shoes/boots/bag. Minimum jewelry, unfussy.

shiveringtimber · 13/12/2018 08:01

And as PP have said, being slim helps!

LadyRochfordsFrostedGusset · 13/12/2018 08:05

GoGreen so many people using money to get attractive get it massively wrong, go too far and look weird. They're usually new money though tbf.

PurpleWithRed · 13/12/2018 08:10

I am not glam but I am less of a mess than I use to be!
Check out Look Fabulous Forever for makeup advice for people with the odd wrinkle, they have lots of videos and the founder Trish does glam really well.

A haircut you can manage yourself - ie blow dry without needing the help of an octopus, easy to refresh/stays looking good all day - really helps.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 13/12/2018 08:45

What is the best dry shampoo? Batiste is okay but I've heard that there's a better one and I can't remember what it is called.

ElizabethinherGermanGarden · 13/12/2018 08:47

Also, do you think that a bit of a swoopy side fringe adds to glam-ness. Mine has grown out and was frankly a pain in the arse but I've recently seen some photos and I look a bit moon-faced without it. Wondering whether I should have it put back in.

evilharpy · 13/12/2018 08:52

I truly think that some people are just born glam. I work with several ladies like this. One buys her work clothes and shoes in Tesco and rarely goes to the hairdresser but is blessed with lovely skin and hair and a great bone structure and is very slim, and always looks glamorous and very expensive.

Truckingonandon · 13/12/2018 09:05

My friend is effortlessly glam. She struck gold genetically though. Thick glossy hair, a natural tan, pearly white even teeth, a great body shape, beautiful features and pink strong nails. She has a natural eye for style too and dresses beautifully. She naturally has all the things that other people have to pay for - extensions, hair dye, teeth whitening, fake tan etc

lifebeginz · 13/12/2018 09:33

I love glamorous older ladies too!!! I think it is a case of looking "groomed" and not too try hard. I love the way women dressed and styled themselves in previous eras. I seen a picture on FB and it was ladies waving their men off to way. It was very poignant but it really struck me how groomed and "done" they looked. Hair styled neatly, nice outfits and shoes and just "poised" if that makes sense. i would love to be one of those people...but I do spend a large amoung of my time in muddy boats and cosy dog walking coat.

Lisbon · 13/12/2018 10:15

I'd hate to look "glam".

Even the word is hideous.

I'd love to be think I'll be elegant in my old age and I suspect that's actually the opposite of "glam"

darlingShelby · 13/12/2018 11:12

Surely the word should be groomed glamorous evokes all kinds of unusual interpretations.
Groomed is accessible for all, and it would be how l’d describe the tips talked about today.

Milliy · 13/12/2018 11:30

I think looking happy in your own skin is what I find attractive in other women and something to aspire to.

Stroller15 · 13/12/2018 11:38

I think it's hair spray, nude lipstick and hand moisturiser. Also the best quality clothes you can afford and reading the care instructions on the label. I fail miserably at all of the above

DontCallMeCharlotte · 13/12/2018 12:52

And as PP have said, being slim helps!

Oh this is so tedious. No one would argue that slimness is the gold standard for health but are you telling me this isn't glamorous?

What is the secret to looking glam??!
Milliy · 13/12/2018 13:03

DontcallmeCharlotte no, not my idea of glamorous. Sorry.

citychick · 13/12/2018 13:11

Botox. And / or a stress free life.
You'll never look glam if you appear to have the weight of the world on your shoulders.

I work in an environment where I meet lots of very wealthy people.
I usually see the mums. Sometimes the dads. Not one of them looks like they've lived a hard life.

They may be dressed down and causal but they look a million dollars simply because they've looked after themselves.

IMO.
